Learn how to clean and treat your new marmoleum. A bit of attention to the proper cleaning and care procedures starting right after installation will make the maintenance of your Marmoleum floor simple and enable it to look beautiful for decades. However, any pH neutral cleaner will work well in its properly diluted solution. Like the environment, Marmoleum does NOT respond well to the use of high pH, aggressive chemical cleaning agents traditionally associated with vinyl floor coverings. These types of cleaners should always be avoided. Adding a floor finish at this stage will revitalize those areas. Do not over apply finish to areas (such as along wall base) which are not walked on as this just causes unnecessary build-up of polish. The need to apply Finish will vary dramatically according to circumstances. We recommend the following procedure: Do NOT flood the floor or use too much water. If there are any spots of surplus adhesive these should be removed by rubbing with a nylon kitchen pad. This ensures any alkaline residues are neutralized. Marmoleum is made from natural raw materials and harsh alkalis or high pH (such as Ammonia or similar products) should be avoided.Use a clean lint free cloth, or better still, a well squeezed out fresh mop head (if the same mophead for cleaning is used ensure it is thoroughly cleaned) and apply the finish evenly, working backwards. Make sure you do not apply polish to wall base, carpets, furniture etc. ALLOW THE POLISH TO DRY BETWEEN COATS (usually between 30-40 minutes). If you prefer a higher gloss level apply a third thin coat. If the floor is muddy it can be cleaned with a damp mop, making sure the dirt is rinsed out of the mop and not spread back on the floor. If soiling is tenacious use Marmoleum Floor Cleaner as previously instructed. After several such applications, you may wish to apply one or more additional thin coats of Marmoleum Floor Finish to restore the sheen level. The need to apply Finish will vary dramatically according to circumstances, from perhaps every couple of months to annually. A scrubbing sponge (i.e. SOS, Scotch-Brite) or nylon brush is ideal. On larger floors you can use mechanical methods. Small rotary floor machines and wet vacuum cleaners such as the Bissel system are very good at cleaning and removing the ingrained dirt. After cleaning, allow to dry completely before reapplying the Marmoleum Floor Finish. To do this, follow the instructions on the bottle of Marmoleum Floor Cleaner. If I stain my Marmoleum, what should I do?http://www.crw7.co.uk/userfiles/fitness-center-operations-manual.xml Any prior application of Marmoleum Floor Finish, will make it even easier.Rub the stained area with a nylon kitchen pad and undiluted Marmoleum Concentrated Floor Cleaner. Leave in contact with the floor for 2-3 minutes then rinse with clear water. Repeat if necessary. Once dry, apply a small amount of polish. If moving a heavy object across the floor, place a piece of carpet (or similar) underneath it. It merely seals the dirt in.Two or three thin coats are better than one thick one.During the manufacturing process this oxidation may result in a yellowish cast, known as ambering, on the product when it is initially taken out of it's packaging. This visual discoloration is only TEMPORARY. The process may take only a few hours in bright sunlight but longer with artificial light. Applying a finishing over the ambering makes NO difference--it will still disappear with exposure to light. For larger areas a scrubber dryer or a rotary machine (150-300 rpm) with a 3M red pad or equivalent may be used. Pick up dirty water with a wiper and mop or wet vacuum, rinse with clean water and allow floor to dry. Use protective feet on chairs and tables to reduce scratching. Castor wheels should be of soft material suitable for resilient floor coverings (according to EN425) Entrance flooring systems of an appropriate size (ideally more than 6lm) and quality should be used.http://seasailing.us/node/3441 Forbo Coral or Nuway entrance flooring systems, are independently proven to remove and retain up to 94 of all dirt and moisture entering a building by foot traffic; reducing maintenance costs and maximising appearance retention of adjacent flooring products as well as reducing slip risk. As with any dirt removal system all entrance flooring systems should be regularly cleaned to release the dirt which has been removed. High quality cleaning products and equipment ensure efficient maintenance and represent only a small proportion of maintenance costs. Overuse or inadequate rinsing of cleaning chemicals may compromise the performance of the floor. Abrasive powders or cleansers should not be used. When producing a cleaning and maintenance schedule it is good practice to consider the situation of the floor first: e.g. is it near an entrance to the building or on an upper floor. Will it collect dry or moist soil. What level of traffic will it be subjected to. Remember that light and uni-colours may need to be cleaned more frequently. Most stains can be safely removed using a dry (paper) towel, water, detergent, white spirit or alcohol (in that order). Do NOT use highly alkaline products (ammonia, soda) or strong solvents such as acetone as they can be harmful to both people and to your floor. Brown or black pads should not be used on Sphera products For spray buffing, 300 to 500 rpm is the recommended speed for removing gloss irregularities and restoring the floor’s original, optimum appearance. For spray buffing use a pH neutral floor maintainer. If alternative products are to be used consult with your regular supplier for more information, guidance and warranty. Hygrothermal properties. With a little care and attention it will stay looking good through out its life. The floor takes more punishment than almost any other furnishing in your home and we have offer a finish and a cleaner especially for your Marmoleum floor. These will make cleaning easier and enhance the richness of the colors. Answer: You can use the floor at once. If you wish, sweep or dry vacuum the floor but wait at least 5 days after installation before wet mopping or moving heavy furniture. This gives the adhesive time to “cure” and become more resistant to moisture, and indentation. Do NOT flood the floor. Marmoleum is made from natural raw materials and harsh alkalis or cleansers with high pH (such as Ammonia or similar products) should be avoided. 3. Rinse the floor with a clean mop. 4. Allow to dry. Answer: This will depend on variables such as the type of use it gets and whether dirt has been trafficked in from outside. If the floor is muddy it can be cleaned with a damp mop, making sure the dirt is rinsed out of the mop and not spread back on the floor. If the soiling is tenacious, use Marmoleum Floor Cleaner as previously instructed in restorative care. After several such applications, you may wish to apply one or more additional thin coats of Marmoleum Floor Finish to restore the gloss level. Do not over apply finish over areas which are not walked on (such as wall base) as this just causes unnecessary build-up of polish. The need to apply finish may vary dramatically from perhaps every couple of months to annually, depending on the degree of usage or other circumstances. Answer: Adhered dirt will have to be removed with friction. A scrubbing sponge or nylon brush is ideal. Use care in spot cleaning if using aggressive cleaning tools. Small rotary floor machines and wet vacuum cleaners are very good at cleaning and removing the ingrained dirt. After cleaning, allow to dry completely before re-applying the Marmoleum Floor Finish. If the soiling is severe, the old finish may have to be removed. To do this, follow the instructions on the bottle of Marmoleum Concentrated Floor Cleaner. If I stain my Marmoleum, what should I do. Answer: The vast majority of spills can be cleaned off your Marmoleum satisfactorily. If the stain persists, as it may with glue, varnish, paint, ink, tar, cosmetics, or shoe polish, some wines and coffee and some other substances, the solution is to remove the surface finish and the stain with it. Apply undiluted Marmoleum cleaner to the affected area and leave in contact with the floor for 2-3 minutes. Rub the stained area with a nylon kitchen pad then rinse with clear water. Once dry, apply a small amount of finish. If moving a heavy object across the floor, place a piece of carpet (or similar) underneath it. It merely seals the dirt in. - Apply thick coats of finish. Two or three thin coats are better than one thick one. - Use too much water. An occurrence during the manufacturing process is that while it is maturing in the drying stoves, a yellow cast, termed “drying room film” may appear on its surface. This film, caused by oxidation of linseed oil, occurs intermittently and with varying intensity. It is most noticeable on the blue and grey shades. However, the discoloration is only TEMPORARY. When exposed to light, the drying room film disappears. The process may take only a few hours in bright sunlight but longer with artificial light. The neutral PH of this cleaner helps protect the natural Marmoleum ingredients. Still, as with every floor, it’s important to regularly clean and maintain them to minimize scratches, scuffs and, other damage. Here are some cleaning tips for preventing linoleum and Marmoleum floors from damage and keeping them looking their best. If moving a heavy object across the floor, place a piece of carpet (or something similar) underneath it. It'll merely seals the dirt in. Two or three thin coats are better than one thick one. High pH strippers will permanently damage and remove the protective top layer of the flooring material. Additionally, high pH strippers will be absorbed by the linoleum or Marmoleum, causing it to expand and become softer. In this softened state, further damage to the linoleum or Marmoleum can easily occur with the use of heavy duty stripping pads (normally used for traditional wet stripping). Use a good neutral pH stripper (we recommend LinoSafe Stripper made by Diversey). Even your grandparents likely used linoleum in many parts of their homes. Since those days, improved variations became available in the flooring market: linoleum sheet rolls and tiles. They’re also low maintenance, making them an exemplary floor if you have an overly busy life. There isn’t any doubt that Forbo is one of the leading linoleum brands in the world. Nevertheless, check out these fifteen things to consider about them before making a decision. Be sure to ask more about Forbo, because they’re still the global leader in this type of flooring. Even better is their durable linoleum flooring products are easily useable in important rooms like bathrooms, basements, laundry rooms, or office spaces. These use a patented cured finish called Topshield2, which has double UV protection. It helps retain the appearance of your linoleum floor so you reduce the costs of ownership during its lifetime. Some of you may entertain numerous guests in your home every week, making linoleum sheets or tile a good choice. Forbo’s website reminds that linoleum is one of the oldest flooring materials. Recently, this material celebrated 150 years of existence. Still, what more do you need to know about it when shopping? With sheet rolls, you have a simple glue-down method, making it very easy to install on your own without professional help. A good example of this size includes the popular Vintage Blue under the Marmoleum Walton Cirrus collection. You can start out with a 13” x 13” size and go up to 20” x 20” for larger spaces. In between, you can get 12” x 36”, 19.7” x 19.7”, or 12” x 12”. As an example, the Marmoleum Click Cinch LOC linoleum tile is sold in 12” x 12” squares and 12” x 36” panels. In the case of Forbo’s linoleum sheet rolls, you’ll measure this in wear layer. The thicker the wear layer, the more durable your linoleum is. You’ll still find 2.5 mm in some products (like Marmoleum Composition Tile ), though you’ll find some thickness levels at 0.37”. Ultimately, this comes out to 9.8 mm, giving you incredible durability for floors getting the most foot traffic daily. It gives you something durable for years, whether entertaining often in your home or dealing with hundreds of customers every day in your business. In the case of Forbo, it’s going to mean different warranty lengths based on whether using your floor for a business or residence. This is still a long time before you might need any repairs or replacements. Marmoleum Striato is one example of common use in businesses and the five-year warranty plan. Forbo makes this fairly uniform, and they make it clear before you buy. Many examples of this exist with Forbo’s Marmoleum Click Cinch LOC collections that are so easy to install. Residential warranties are often for 25 years and sometimes life. We’ll explore this more later. Despite some floors having longer warranties for businesses, five years is more than suitable for linoleum. Because heavy use could wear out linoleum after a few years, you’ll find this type of warranty very useful. It’s equally important for things like sound control and making these floors more level in different rooms. Armstrong is another brand providing their own underlayment for many of their products. In Forbo’s case, it’s corkment. The intention of this underlayment is to achieve a substantial sound reduction if your business or home has constant loud noises. It reduces sound to 14dB. It installs the same direction as the linoleum sheet rolls. After completing this task, it requires 24 hours for the adhesive to set. Then you’re ready to install your linoleum sheet or tiles over the underlayment. Forbo notes they’re specialists in acoustic flooring, so you can depend on an underlayment of quality. Know you may need underlayment when using linoleum in other rooms of your home or business to keep the floor even. Using different floor thickness levels in other rooms could lead to your floor looking uneven without using underlayment in some form. It usually entails either a gluedown method or a locking mechanism. In Forbo’s Stucco Rosso linoleum sheet product, it’s recommended to use Forbo 885. However, most in the Marmoleum collection use the earlier mentioned Click Cinch LOC install method. The Trace of Nature linoleum tile product is one example. If you have any questions about the adhesives or install methods, we’re here to answer questions at Floor City. Like vinyl flooring, linoleum is very affordable as well. You might think the best prices in flooring are only brand names like Armstrong. Even so, when you can find an online source that sells flooring, you can definitely find further discounts to reduce retail prices. Did you know Forbo makes up about 60 of the world market in linoleum floor products now. It’s not hard to see why thanks to the natural and recycled materials used in their sheet rolls and tile. Forbo’s Topshield2 finish makes a big difference in making cleaning easier, something not always common with competitors. Once the adhesive is dried, you’ll want to clean the floor before initial use. What’s most important is to use a neutral floor cleaner to clean up any debris on the floor brought on from the installation. Scrubber dryers are also used frequently on linoleum without causing damage to clean up initial debris. How often you clean depends on how much dirt your floor attracts during a given period. In a business with considerable floor traffic (and perhaps where inclement weather is a problem), customers could track in loads of dirt on a regular basis. No explanation is necessary if kids and animals play on your floors for long hours. Of course, you may have to do some different types of cleaning based on what stains your linoleum take on. Regardless, when you get stains on your linoleum, be sure to clean them up as soon as possible so they won’t set in. Simply using water and a paper towel should wipe up any stains quickly. These create fumes that can harm people. Most of these also don’t do your linoleum any good. They’re very gentle on any type of floor, especially linoleum. When you’re away from home for long periods, a Roomba will keep your floor looking pristine with slow and thorough vacuuming. All of it depends on how much floor traffic your home gets. Having this go on every week can start to wreak havoc on any type of floor. Thanks to the five-year warranty, you’ll have years of use before it starts to show any signs of wear. This particular type of linoleum was fully intended for commercial use originally, yet homes quickly realized the value of its use. Not long after, it became the most popular type of flooring during the late 19 th century and into the early 20 th century. As with many flooring brands, Forbo offers a big palette of colors to choose from, not including various textures. This is just a general category, because the color of stone comes in other primary colors to match your interior design. We carry up to 102 Forbo linoleum sheet products with this aesthetic. It runs from Camel Fresno, Golden Safron, Stucco Rosso, Asian Tiger, Olive Green, and Black Hole Concrete as just some. You can also get standard white when you want to keep things simple. With white, you’ll get variations as well like White Marble and Himalaya MCT. This is an important aspect about color choice requiring us to send samples so you know you’re truly getting what you want. It’s why we’re glad to send you free samples so you can see what the color looks like in reality before making a buying commitment. Our staff is there to guide you. As you compare different brands, you’ll see Forbo has their own unique approach to creating their linoleum. They continually mention that making linoleum is a true art form you can’t really teach in schools. Their dedication to evolving linoleum over the last 150 years has also fostered only a select few having the knowledge to create their products. It requires proper ingredient mixtures, raw material settling, and applying the right temperature. All of this comes from in-house training so they stand apart from competitors. Go on their websites, though, and you’ll see they charge full retail price. By the time you have the order shipped to you (or you go to pick it up in person), you’ll have paid more than you can find elsewhere. You’ll find some flooring companies offering discounts, but you won’t find as low of prices as you will on our site: Floor City. Those of you looking for linoleum flooring should always turn to us first rather than think you’ll get the best service from the big box names. Besides, they won’t ship out free samples like we do. Many top flooring brands now focus on this. Forbo isn’t new to this fray by any means, including having a long track record bringing green principles to their linoleum sheet and tile. They’ve created a methodology called Life Cycle Assessment, which provides a transparent means to measure their environmental performance. These provide detailed environmental information based off of data taken from the LCA’s above. Their ultimate goal is to reduce any damage or pollution from the materials they use during linoleum production. At the same time, they ensure the planned life of the material being used is done correctly to abide by all environmental laws. It allows employees to bring more environmental awareness to the company via their own free will. Through encouragement of workers contributing their own efforts toward how they consume energy and recycle, the company rises above most other flooring companies in utilizing green processes. They also have many environmental labels that define exactly how serious they are in upholding their green status. Their LEED status is at platinum level and the stats on this show every detail of their certification. In their composition sheet, you’ll find information about their linoleum’s physical properties, recycled content, rapidly renewable materials, and acoustical performance. With low emitting materials, it’s perfectly suitable to use their linoleum in places like public schools. Schools and healthcare are two industries using linoleum often due to the heavy foot traffic often taking place in their buildings. As a whole, Forbo meets all federal government requirements when it comes to low emitting material. At Floor City, not only will you be able to find the best discount prices on flooring, you’ll also find customer service at a personalized level.
