However, this trainer, the Forward Observer Personal Computer Simulator (FOPCSIM), was built atop a commercial development tool for which the MOVES Institute had a development license... This is extremely important, since instructors can use the results of the students' performance on FOPCSIM to target those who are in danger of failing for extra instruction prior to the exam in the hopes of bringing them to a passing knowledge level. The most recent upgrades, available in versions 1.4 and later, include adding capability for After Action Review, integration with SCORM-compliant learning management systems (LMS's), and distributed interactive simulation (DIS) networking. Additionally, more applications, created by both government users and civilian companies, continue to be built using Delta3D and its expanding capabilitiesWith these added features, Delta3D has become the engine of choice for several military simulations, including programs of record. The developers and program managers of these programs were attracted by its advanced technical features, its lack of proprietary vendor lock-in and licensing fees, and the ability to quickly produce sophisticated applications using Delta3D.This paper discusses the current state of Delta3D version 1.4 and how developers and program managers can use Delta3D to quickly and cheaply build complex training systems. It will also briefly touch upon the systems currently being built using Delta3D and how some of these have been proven to work in a training environment.http://www.poznanapartament.pl/userfiles/fiske-osmometer-manual.xml

A marine simulator is the system that can provide a virtual scene to train sailors and perform simulations for research. Marine simulators in existence usually use plane projection technique to structure visual scene and the mariners control the virtual ship by a spacious room.. Design and Application of Multi-function Marine Simulators for the Future Conference Paper Full-text available Aug 2018 Feng Ma Bolan Zhang Chen Chen Jialun Liu As the development of smart ships, marine simulators are expected to have multiple functions to fit the needs of future research, training, and practices for instance remote-control experience. This paper introduces design of a multi-function marine simulator that integrates state-of-the-art devices and technology. The composition of the proposed simulator consists of shore-based and ship-based facilities and devices, including, but not limited to on-board sensors, VR glasses, six-degree-of-freedom platform, and computation servers. The functions of the simulator introduced in combination of the application scenarios. Furthermore, the practical applications in remote control, enhanced navigation, and test and measurements of smart ships are presented. In the end, pros and cons of the proposed simulator and possible upgrades for further development are summarised. Marine simulators in existence usually use plane projection technique to structure visual scene and the mariners control the virtual ship by a spacious room. Obviously, today's marine simulators have some disadvantages. The high price and large-space-requirements impede the installation, meanwhile the one-by-one training model fails to meet the training demand of large group of trainees is also a problem. Ship design is moving forwards more artificial intelligence and less men power, which is the important information for marine simulators to pay attention.http://www.klimaschule.at/file/fiskars-powerserver-manual.xml As the unmanned ships and remote-control ships coming into use, marine simulators should be changed to meet the new demands of these driving modes. To design a new type of marine simulator, we should consider functions like remote control, remote monitoring, enhance control and safety alarm. Based on function modularization and information fusion, multi-degree motion platform and Virtual Reality equipment are integrated to develop the marine simulator for the future needs of smart ships on marine simulators. In order to help correct this, the MOVES Institute at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, USA, has developed Delta3D, an open-source game-based simulation engine. Delta3D provides all the functionality of other game engines in an open-source environment, allowing developers to use it at no cost and modify it to meet their requirements. While the idea of an open-source game engine is not unique, Delta3D is distinctive in its architecture. Delta3D serves as a very thin layer designed to tie together several other open source libraries which provide the various functionality of the engine. These allow Delta3D to easily and cheaply improve over time. This paper will cover the development of Delta3D, applications built with it, and building advanced applications with it. View Show abstract Virtual Environments for Intuitive Human-System Interaction Part 1 Technical Report Full-text available Dec 2005 Joseph V Cohn Research and Technology Organization Technical Report, Human Factors and Medicine Panel Augmented, Mixed, and Virtual Environments (AMVE) are new paradigms and media that provide a realistic training environment and a natural HSI using complex realistic or abstract synthetic environments. They allow trainees and human operators to experience synthetic environment that are appropriate for the tasks to be performed.http://www.statcardsports.com/node/13066 Ideally, military personnel should be presented the same cues in the synthetic world that they would experience in the real world. They should be able to interact with synthetic entities as if they were real. In recent years AMVE-technologies have expanded from their original application as training media to a broad spectrum of military applications. This report provides an overview of AMVE research and development activities in the participating nations. Training encompasses vehicle operation training, individual skills and collective tactical training, and command and control training. Teleoperation refers to the remote control of unmanned vehicles. It also includes telemedicine, i.e. remote diagnostics and surgery. Operational mission support consists of new technologies for supporting the dismounted soldier or infantryman in his operational mission. View Show abstract Self-calibrating Laser-pointer's Spotlight Detection System for Projection Screen Interaction Conference Paper Jan 2015 Inayatullah Khan Abdul Bais Peter M. Roth Muhammad Asif Large projection screens are increasingly present for everyday use at work. This paper introduces a new reliable system that utilizes spotlight emitted from a laser pointer device, a camera and a projection screen for interaction between human and computer. A camera is placed in a presentation room at a fixed but unknown distance and directed to the projected screen displayed on a wall. Although the locations, orientations and optical parameters of the camera and projected display are unknown, the system self-calibrate by inferring the mapping between the pixels in the camera image to the pixels on the projected screen. The camera is subsequently used to recognize and detect the location of the spotlight on the screen, allowing the laser pointer for substituting the pointing actions of a mouse. The proposed method reliably detects the spotlight in real time and over extremely dynamic backgrounds under varying illumination conditions. For these reasons, simulation systems are available for providing an almost realistic training platform for the forward observer. FOPCSIM is a useful tool for the training of the forward observer without major requirements. However, it is a stand-alone system and many of the actual procedures of the observed fire are provided by the system. This thesis presents another system which simulates the Fire Direction Center procedures during a firing mission. The two systems have a network communication for exchanging messages similarly with the real communication messages between the forward observer and the FDC. Now, the training of the forward observer is more realistic because this person must take into account the existence of the FDC, must wait for responses for each message sent out, and must deal with problems such as communication errors, time delays in sending and receiving messages, and modifications in the call for fire from the FDC. The new system will provide feedback by keeping a history of each mission and giving the observer the capability to review the process of each mission and make useful conclusions about performance. View full-text Conference Paper Full-text available Evaluation of Distributed Situation Awareness on a Ship Bridge September 2016 Stella Parisi Andreas Ludtke Situation Awareness (SA) is an important cognitive aspect of the decision making activities on a ship bridge. The navigation crew uses the bridge systems to gather information elements and gain SA. Designers need to understand the SA requirements of the crew and develop systems with User Interfaces (UI) that support these requirements. This paper proposes a model-based approach for the analysis and evaluation of DSA that can be used in early system design stages. The methodology will use cognitive task analysis and fuzzy cognitive mapping techniques for knowledge representation, focusing on the SA requirements of the crew. Knowledge necessary for the use of the program can be included in a user interface. Often, further improvements are possible when the user interface gives the appropriate support. The real improvement comes often from the fact that a good user interface makes it possible to work in a way which requires less knowledge. The role of knowledge analysis and (cognitive) task analysis is indispensable. The system can provide a trade off analysis of time vs.The Decision Aids system can provide a vastly improved mobility, situational awareness, and decision cycle capabilities which can be utilized to increase the tempo of battle. Authors build user interfaces by di- rect manipulation and then use a Behavior Recorder tool to demonstrate al- ternative correct and incorrect actions. The resulting behavior graph is an- notated with instructional messages and knowledge labels. We present some preliminary evidence of the effectiveness of this approach, both in terms of reduced development time and learning outcome. Pseudo Tutors have now been built for economics, analytic logic, mathematics, and language learn- ing. Our data supports an estimate of about 25:1 ratio of development time to instruction time for Pseudo Tutors, which compares favorably to the 200:1 estimate for Intelligent Tutors, though we acknowledge and discuss limitations of such estimates. YUNXIU XU The K9ER system was designed to provide veterinary students the opportunity to learn and practice the diagnostic and treatment processes in an emergency room. It can be operated on any personal computer with Windows95 and later. QCP provides all the physiological data to display the patient responses to the treatments. The expert system consists of three parts: the knowledge base which holds the expert knowledge; the inference engine which handles the knowledge base, knowledge source, and information provided by the user to reach its conclusions; and the user interface which communicates with the user and translates the information from the user to the representations that the interface engine can understand. K9ER simulates the clinical processes, gives the realistic real-time records, evaluates the user activities, and provides the expert's suggestions. This combination of simulator and expert system is an ideal tool for interactive learning. Read more Conference Paper Expert system tools applied to power system analysis October 1992 C. Davis Y. The focus of effort during TDS concept development was to enhance the Marine’s decisionmaking ability. TDSs are designed to provide a training capability that could be used to exercise doctrinal, analytical, and intuitive decisionmaking applications and skills. Combining this approach with other operational and leadership initiatives, such as mentoring and leadership development based on experiential learning methods and critical thinking, poses a leverageable opportunity for enhanced performance anytime, anyplace. TDSs are used at the centers of excellence and simulation centers as well as by units employing the deployable virtual training environment (DVTE) and by individual Marines on their personal computers. Can I justify the application to meet the means?” While the employment of TDGs became universal throughout the Marine Corps, they still had limitations, such as facilitator experience and the ability to link the applications with the commander’s intent. Too often the TDG of yesteryear focused on the conventional concept of tactics and weapons employment vice a conceptual application to achieve outcomes favorable to friendly forces’ mission objectives and unfavorable to opposing forces. Marine Corps Doctrinal Publication 1 (MCDP 1), Warfighting, specifically addresses this issue as follows: We believe that implicit communication-to communicate through mutual understanding, using a minimum of key, well-understood phrases or even anticipating each other’s thoughts-is a faster, more effective way to communicate than through the use of detailed, explicit instructions. We develop this ability through familiarity and trust, which are based on a shared philosophy and shared experience. While Gen Krulak provided a more modern approach, it lacked universal application-due to resource limitations, access, and facilitation skills-to link the experiential learning to training applications. Despite the limitations, Gen Krulak expanded the opportunity to integrate gaming through emerging concepts like “the strategic corporal” and human networks that linked noncontiguous operations in diverse environments with informational flows and decisionmaking requirements to meet 21st century operational expectations. TDSs combine the opportunity to link individual study with group training based on the ability to assess, evaluate, and link simulation activity to doctrine, tactics, techniques, and procedures utilized in the warfighting environment. Limited time is allocated to meet operational, training, logistical, and administrative goals in the training and operating environment. TDSs provide Marines with operational enablement via simulation that reduces time requirements and amplifies the thought processes required to perform operational and administrative tasks. Wargaming provides the ability to identify operational surfaces and gaps within the unit standing operating procedures and develop corrective actions if needed before the first weapon is drawn from the armory. The following TDSs excel in providing the means to conduct analytical decisionmaking by facilitating an operational unit of Marines working together as a team. The interactions of the units that are created for any given scenario by the end user are conceptual in nature. The focus of effort is on group situational awareness. The representation of units is accomplished with military standard icons moving and interacting on a two-dimensional map. Two to three hours is generally required from the time that the unit’s course of action is created in a scenario until the after-action review (AAR) is completed. TacOps MC stimulates a virtual tactical exercise without troops (TEWT) from the company to regimental landing team level. TacOps MC is a turn-based simulation. Each turn consists of two phases, an orders phase and a combat phase. Once all orders have been given, the combat phase begins. During the combat phase the units of both forces, under computer control, simultaneously carry out their orders for movement and combat in four 15-second pulses. You only observe during the combat phase; you cannot give or change orders until the next orders phase. The movement and interaction of computer-generated infantry and armor units are treated with great detail. Supporting air and artillery activities are treated more conceptually. The simulation may be played alone against an opposing force (OpFor) computer opponent or between two or more players on one or more computers. TacOps MC is available for download by all Marines from the TDS web site. This simulation stimulates a virtual TEWT from the company to the Marine expeditionary unit level. MAGTF XXI is a realtime simulation; once the simulation is started it will wargame the course of action. Orders are received and executed while the scenario plays out. The duration of the training scenario is determined by the trainer. The simulation may be played alone against an OpFor computer opponent or between two or more players on multiple, networked computers. The primary focus of the simulation is MAGTF operations. The movement and interaction of computer-generated ground, air, and naval elements are treated conceptually. With an interface to command and control personal computer (C2PC), MAGTF XXI provides the, capability for the training audience to use the actual command, control, communications, computers, and intelligence gear they would use in a real environment. MAGTF XXI and the C2PC gateway are available for download by all Marines from die TDS web site. Multiple experiences allow the decisionmaker to consciously and subconsciously draw on the experienced past and rapidly make current decisions. In addition to conducting small unit analytical decisionmaking during the planning phase prior to executing the scenario, the following TDSs afford the opportunity to run multiple iterations of the same scenario in a short amount of time. The scenario can be focused on specific tasks. An example is an infantry squad leader working on controlling direct fires. The scenario can be limited to 5 minutes followed by a 5 minute AAR with the leader asking the following questions: What happened. Why did it happen? How could it have been done better. Within 1 hour the trainee would have made multiple decisions all in relation to the control of fires that become “experiences” that the Marine can draw from while using intuitive decisionmaking in the future. This TDS stimulates a virtual TEWT from the squad to platoon levels.
