Register a free business account It performs automated connectivity tests to help identify network problems. The device identifies cabling infrastructure, including length and type of both structured or patch cables, to help uncover potential issues. It verifies network drops and identifies link types, device capabilities, and link speed to help diagnose and solve complex issues, and it tests connectivity to network resources and response time to determine whether a PC network interface controller (NIC) is responding. It has two buttons for navigating the menu options on the LCD interface. The LinkRunner network multimeter comes with a main wiremap adapter, two AA batteries, and instructions. This portable network testing device is suitable for use by network technicians to verify network connectivity of local-area networks in environments such as office buildings or schools. Portable networking devices are used to test and monitor the performance of wired and wireless networks in large organizations. Local-area networks (LANs) are made up of wiring, computers, servers, printers, phones, software applications, and networking devices in a limited geographic area such as an office or school. A wide-area network (WAN) contains similar devices and wiring, but encompasses a broad area, linking businesses or organizations across regional or national boundaries. Network engineers use portable networking devices to pinpoint connectivity or performance issues on a network, and to diagnose and solve network problems. Networking devices help troubleshoot copper or fiber optic cable wiring connections and wireless network infrastructure, ensuring that cables are connected and that network devices are working properly. They measure network performance and the network's ability to transfer data according to the organization's needs, and they can verify that software services within a network are available and responsive. Fluke Networks manufactures tools for network infrastructure installation, testing, certification, and troubleshooting, in copper, fiber, and wireless networks, with its tools widely used by contractors, enterprises, and communication service providers. The company, which operates globally, is based in Everett, WA. What's in the Box? I suggest keeping a copy of the instructions in a case with it.If you only need the basics and don't want to fork over the extra cash then this is the tool for you.I received one as a going a way present from my old job. Because my job duties had changed, I haven't used mine several months. It sat in my desk drawer, and somehow half of the LCD quit working. I contacted Fluke's customer service, because I was 12 days out of warranty they wouldn't do anything to replace it.But would need a receiver to pick up tone sound. Built in Light for dark spots. Kind of Pricey, but work the cost. Informa PLC's registered office is 5 Howick Place, London SW1P 1WG. Registered in England and Wales. Number 8860726. In a small office environment that uses DHCP, it took us less than 20 seconds to connect and check the physical link; identify the router, DHCP and DNS servers; and determine that 802.1X was not in use. On a larger network using fixed IP addresses, we had to configure the IP address of the Fluke device manually. That took a minute or two, but it wasn't difficult. In this case, once the LinkRunner could operate at the IP level, it still couldn't give the router or server addresses because ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) had been disabled as a security measure. In a similar case, at a site with someone knowledgeable of that particular network, the tool can still be configured easily to ping these key devices to ensure that they can be reached. In less than 20 seconds, we knew we had connected with a DHCP assigned address at 1 Gbps, full-duplex. We also had the router address, and the DHCP and DNS servers' addresses. In a few more seconds, we found the switch we were connected to could see that CDP was in use. The device then reported the port and slot into which we were connected. In this instance, we created some IP addresses and device names in the LinkRunner Connect software running on a notebook computer. This software is included with the LinkRunner for use on a laptop and makes it easier to enter ping targets in a handy table. The names and addresses were downloaded to the device, and we had the primary devices we wanted to ping listed. All we had to do was highlight the target device and hit the enter key. The software does not perform any diagnostics. On networks using 802.1X authentication, the correct user information--usually user name and password--can be downloaded from the notebook to see if the authentication process is working. If this is as simple as downloading ping targets, it should be no problem. Here's a look at the three indispensable network skills IT leaders are now seeking. Learn from this experience.
