SaraVirginia 4.0 out of 5 stars As a real estate agent, I like to give it to my first-time home buyers (pertinent gift for newlyweds too?) to help them fix things at low cost, or alternatively to help them know what to expect when they hire a professional. Clients have told me that they didn't know what to do when the garbage disposal, toilet, light fixture, or other item quit working; and they pulled out this book and just took care of it. Over I have given out the most recent edition I could find, and I am always wishing for updated editions, which would be my only issue with this book. Dec. 2018 Update: I ordered two copies of this book, which is the 2009 edition according to the Amazon description. I received two 1997 copies (both in brand new condition, but not acceptable because they are so out of date. The book still is great--how much does the technology for unjamming a garbage disposal or wiring a lamp. But watch out about the edition you order and receive. Dec 2018: And another update: Mystery solved. I wondered where the newer editions of this excellent book disappeared to. Well, Readers Digest now publishes its home repair Do-It-Yourself books under the name The Family Handyman. At last I know where to look for relatively current editions--hooray!I wasn't trained in all trades so this book is nice. It save me a service call to fix my toilet that was running. The illustrations are really helpful and the explanations are easy to understand. I recommend this book not only for women who want to attempt to repair a few things themselves and save some money but for anyone who would like to do the same.I think it works well for this market. No, it doesn't cover everything, but is does well on the topics it covers. Personally I own about 6 of these type books.http://lhdrum.com/User_File/UpFile/20201011021014_ZmFudWMtcGFyYW1ldGVyLW1hbnVhbC1iLTY1MjgwZW4=.xml If you have experience in repair or construction, this is probably not going to be a super good reference for you. But for new homeowners, renters who want to be handy, etc. I can recommend this book. Just don't expect every answer here. Get a few highly rated fix it books and compare.I bought a similar book back in the late 70s and I still use it to this day. This book has excellent and vividly colored pictures and it covers just about anything you can imagine around your house that you may want to fix but, understandably, it doesn't go into great detail due, simply, to the incredible number of things it covers. But, for most people, that's fine. Most people are probably buying this book to help them make basic repairs. There is one problem with this book, though. That is, that it is outdated. It was published in 1996 and it shows. In fact, some you may laugh when you see some stuff included. For example, it tells you how to repair typewriters including manual typewriters. Who uses a typewriter these days. And some of the appliances it shows look like they are from the 50s or 60s. But that's OK because basic repairs for mechanical things are very much the same as they were then. However, when it comes to electronics, this book really is dated. It shows basic repairs to cassette players, VCRs, and boom boxes but, of course, MP3 players are not mentioned because they didn't exist when this book was published. But fixing an MP3 player would be way beyond the scope of this book anyway. That minor criticism aside, most of the information in this book should be very helpful. Having many decades experience fixing all kinds of things, I'm not sure that I will get much from this book but I bought it anyway as as a reference and as an addition to my library. The authors are extremely knowledgeable when it comes to the subject matter. It shows. The writing makes it very accessible.https://directori.p2pvalue.eu/explore/cbpp-communities/community/datasheet/dual-522-owners-manual Additionally, through the use of clear diagrams and flowcharts, you can quickly narrow down what part is malfunctioning. I found the book's tone clear and easy to understand. In closing, I would highly recommend this book. However, it is clearly an older publication, as it explains how to fix a typewriter, among other dates items. Overall, it's a useful book, but next time I'll check the copyright date before purchase. They do cover several different projects but definitely a beginners guide. You still have to go look everything up. You still have to go look everything up online anyway. Plus, it omits at least one really important topic, drywall and general painting, while providing multiple topics that few people need, like rotisseries, skis, boats, and fishing tackle. But the layout and formatting is pretty darn good.To my surprise it was the same book but with a new cover I've purchased many years ago. Still included how fix a computer with a CRT monitor, VCR and Cassette player.Go for it as. Go for it as it will save you money in completing a couple of lasting fixes around your home. The information it contains is still relevant even though has moved forward. It shows the fundamentals of many home repairs plumbing, electrical, drywall etc. Most important is it lists skill level required to perform the task AND tells you when to call a pro. After my divorce, a number of recent divorcees, widows and single women found themselves unable to make the simple repairs they'd never attempted. We'd share our knowledge, gleaned from this book, and several ended up ordering one for themselves. We had a great lunch meeting once, learning how to fix a toaster, waffle maker, or hair dryer. Talk about empowerment!!! I bought mine in the 70's and should update it, with all the new technology, but it's like an old friend! And it arrived on the 3rd day.pretty good service from the seller.I purchased this for my son, instead of his calling a fix-it-man. Very clear wording and easy illustrations to follow.Of course if it came back, it had to be replaced because it was ruined and unusable so once I had the new set, I gave it to a relative who had been wanting to borrow mine. Covering everything from replacing faulty faucets and showerheads to curing the quirks of an air conditioner, this book provides step-by-step illustrated instructions, plus a comprehensive chapter on tools. Many of the concepts it discusses are still relevant today, although some of the things discussed have changed. In 1996, a new edition of the Fix-It-Yourself book was published. This new book is about the same size as the original, but it adds many more illustrations, is printed in full color and discusses many of the things found in a household today that weren't yet popular when the first book was published. The improved illustrations and added topics make this book a worthwhile purchase even if you own the previous edition. I'd been curious about the newer edition of the book since I received an advertisement for it back in 1996. That is why I decided to buy this book, so I could see how it compared to the original. Curiously, some of the content from the original book that would still be relevant today--such as the information on basic car repair (both body work and mechanical repair) and diagnosis--is missing completely from the 1996 edition of this book. Also curious is the inclusion of information that the average homeowner may never need, not be able to utilize safely or not understand. For example, a quick guide to locating and replacing the horizontal output transistor in a TV is given. This guide, while interesting, doesn't really provide enough detail for the average person to replace a TV part. Some of the information given in the book is misleading, perhaps in the interest of oversimplification. Vacuum tube based audio and video equipment is covered, but it is suggested that such equipment cannot be repaired as the parts simply do not exist to repair it. Even today that is not so, as many collectors and restorers demonstrate. Generally, however, the information given in the 1996 edition of the Fix-It-Yourself manual is clear, accurate and well described in both text and illustration. My recommendation if you plan to buy this book is to also buy the older, late 1970s edition as well. Between the two of them, you will learn a lot about the things in your home, whether you elect to repair them or not. I have reduced repair bills significantly by following the book and only buying the parts. It is appliance generic, not brand specific, so one has to have a basic understanding of repairs or at least a desire to learn it. Age 62 is not going to stop me. Verisign. The well drawn pictures and difficulty ratings were features I really appreciated. My father had the old blue one and it seemed like he always had it out and was tinkering with something.
