For more advanced trainees it can be a desktop reference, and a collection of the base knowledge needed to proceed with system and network administration. This book contains many real life examples derived from the author's experience as a Linux system and network administrator, trainer and consultant. They hope these examples will help you to get a better understanding of the Linux system and that you feel encouraged to try out things on your own.The extended partition contained a 20 gig ext3 partition, a 20 gig reiser partition, and a 70 gig fat32 partition at the end of it. I deleted the fat32 logical partition, and replaced it with a 63 gig reiser partition and a 7 gig fat partition, but after I hit finish it gave some kind of error message about not being able to mount something, (IIRC the 20 gig reiser logical partition). Please repair manually and reboot. The root file system is currently mounted read only. What should I make sure to avoid doing. What could I do to fix it. Boot from the install CD and use the rescue function. Use a live CD to try to fix it with QTparted. The system is telling you you the root file system is suspect. The system wants you to run fsck -ACV -r (since the root fs is mounted read only -ACRV if you follow instructions to mount read-write) You can fine tune this - read fsck(8) for details. The system is telling you you the root file system is suspect. I just replaced a partition with two new ones.http://www.rencontres-icare.org/userfiles/eureka-world-vacuum-manual.xml

First, you deceide how much control you want. If you feel unsure, use the rescue function and see what it tells you. You don't have to commit any changes it suggests. QT-Parted might help but I'm not sure about its repair routines or whether it has any at all. If you use fschk, you first have to screen the output of the boot-process to find out which partition is really suspect. Depending from the type of file-system on it, fschk has differing options (reiser probably needs a --rebuild-tree, ext3 something else, use the man pages). You don't have to commit any changes it suggests. I'm not anymore since I noticed that I can still use the text mode yast, and that my knoppix CD is damaged. Does this mean that that partition just isn't mounted at the moment, or that it's mounting point somehow got changed? Check them both to make sure that you have the correct partitions associated with the correct mount points (at least for tht system). M. Lacy Western Tool Supply That is it started booting, but gave an error message saying it couldn't write to the home directory, apparently yast screwed up some of the other settings and removed the mount points. When I reset the mount points for hda5 and hda6, hda5 appears to work fine, but hda6 is gone. Apparently somewhere along the line it somehow got changed from ext3 to reiser. I tried changing it from reiser to ext3 in fstab, but that didn't help, it just kept it from booting, with a fsck errer, just like before. So I removed its line from fstab. What are the chances that I can get that partition back? Just say that you want to install manually, it will detect then an already installed system and asks whether it should try to repair. As the errant partitions come under scrutiny, the solution will present itself. It doesn't make sense, it gives dire warnings that using it is for experts only, but hiddes the complexity. Better to use a live CD. It is changed to an other type in the partition table. Normally it is possible to do what you originally wanted. It is changed to an other type in the partition table. Since then I have booted into both XP on Opensuse multiple times. However, since yesterday whenever I boot up Opensuse the splash screen appears, then disappears after a couple of seconds to be replaced with just text Then after text scrolls up the screen, it stops scrolling and shows this message: Priority:-1 extents:1 across 803240kStart Unicode modeTo remount itGive root password for login: When I enter 'yes' it then just continuously enters hundreds of lines of just 'y' I've left it for 10 minutes, nothing happens and the 'hard drive active' light on my laptop does not flash either so my only option is to turn it off by holding down the power button. Is there anyway to repair this other than by doing a full reinstall. Thank you very much for any help as I can't wait to be using it again. If You got a DVD You could fix it from there, try with automatic repair first.Might also be worth doing a disk check in XP After that power off and try to boot openSUSEThere are 3 options, automatic repair, customised repair, and the 3rd I'm not sure of.http://www.liga.org.ua/content/doctrine-and-covenants-teacher-manual I have used the customised option a number of times after messing up the boot menu. If you're not sure where the problem is the automatic repair might be what you want, but it does take a bit of time.I said about using DVD to fix it already but looks like i have to speak more clear as not everyone is a die-hard user ??HTH -- Mark. Nil illegitimi carborundum However, while the text was scrolling through on startup, I noticed a line of text that said I needed to start fsck manually. I then logged in as root when prompted, typed fsck, and then after confirming a few queries and a reboot, everything works perfectly again. My faith in Linux is partially restored. Though it's definitely not as stable as my well looked after XP SP3 installation, which is a disappointment (but hey, it cost a fraction of the price). If You knew how to take care of Linux it would work good as well. If You knew as much about Linux as You know about Windows XP then you wouldn't have so many problems. Linux is hard because it forces You to learn things that Windows XP is more or less hiding to be more user friendly. Of course there are some flaws but in software that comes with Linux, pure Linux (kernel and some low level libraries) haven't got many flaws at all. And the stability is a matter of the software installed, all in all Linux is VERY stable. If You knew how to take care of Linux it would work good as well.Though at times I do find it a little too much (I've disabled app armour for example). I've never had any fatal errors or file system crashes with Windows, and I find Windows to be extremely stable. Anyway, thanks for your suggestion about System Rescue CD, I'm currently downloading the iso.I had suse 10.3 and it was sweet. I must admit I've had a few problems with 11 i.e. wireless card and a jumpy cursor. I don't know much about linux but I do like the control it gives. I especially like the help on this forum so a big thanks to everyone for help solving past and future problems Cheers. One way or another, with time, filesystem may become corrupted and certain parts of it may not be accessible. If your filesystem develops such inconsistency it is recommend to verify its integrity. This check can be done automatically during boot time or ran manually. Here are few examples: You can use it with different arguments. Their usage depend on your specific case. Below you will see some of the more important options: These cods can be seen in fsck’s manual by running: In such cases you may want fsck to automatically attempt to correct the errors. This can be done with: Since you cannot run fsck while the partition is mounted, you can try one of these options: Use the following command: During the next bootup, the fsck will be performed. If downtime is critical, it is recommended to plan this carefully, since if there are many used inodes on your system, fsck may take some extra time. When I try to use Gparted, it says that I must have a more recent version of e2fsprogs. When I use fsck, it says the same thing. I tried to update through Synaptic, it doesn’t see a newer version. What happened? Can I get it back? The logic of the recovery boot menu is broken now. Upon googling and searching the arch fora, I came upon some advice which I tried which has not worked yet. Hence the new post. Basically, I was attempting to print something off and accidentally chose a printer that was not connected to my laptop. After half a minute or so, it repeatedly started giving me notifications that the printer was not connected.in excess of 200 messages that the printer was not working which continued to pop up despite me canceling the print job. The whole system got really sluggish (for the first time in the last year) and I had to restart the laptop upon which the boot messages appear. It gets to the point where its loading the various filesystems. It mounts root and says it fine. Filesystem check failed. Please repair manually and reboot. Note that the root file system is currently mounted readonly. When you exit the maintenance shell the system will reboot automatically. So I booted up using an Ubuntu Live CD and checked and repaired each file system which it successfully did. Upon rebooting into Arch, I am getting the same message. I have not installed anything new and had upgraded the whole system a few days before the problem started. Not sure where to go from here. Any help, please Thanks Samsom Call 1-800-DEV-NULL When I try to unmount the partitions.Managed to unmount all the partitions and check and repair them successfully ( according to Gparted anyway). Still no success. Repairing from the shell was successful (according to fsck) but Arch still failed with the same fsck error. The same happened with fsck from a live cd. Running check from GParted did fix it though, strangely. I can mount all the partitions while using the Live CD. I have to log in as root to access my Arch Home folder.I am not sure why. As I can access my Arch Root folder without logging in as root. I still cannot run fsck on the home and boot folder. When I run fsck, I get the message that the partition is mounted and I risk damage to the filesystem. Also, when I run fsck from the Live CD, the filesystems seem OK. So why would it say in Arch, that its failing the check. Is it possible to boot my Arch system without the filesystem check? Samsom I am having to use Windows XP now I have no idea how those new folders got created.but problem solved now. Thanks for the help, guys Samsom Also, recently, my IDE drive changed from sdb to hda and my dvd drives changed to hdc and hdd. Don't know what the change was (udev?) but the trays won't stay out as well. Upon deleting those folders, everything has gone back to normal. I have no idea how those new folders got created.but problem solved now. Thanks for the help, guys Samsom The problem in udev that do automount to filesystems that he find. That help me to solve the same problem that samson had. Thanks in advance. Thanks in advance. I am assuming that you have used a Live CD and checked all your filesystems. How come you don't have any filesystem under root. Are you checking from withins roots home folder as opposed to root itself.Upon restart, everything was back to normal. Yay! I'll try to delete those folders Maybe it was mounted and you accidentally erased GRUB along with all the config files. This damage can prevent them from booting automatically. When an operational interruption occurs, the startup process prompts the user to enter the root password in order to repair the damaged file system. Give root password for maintenance (or type Control-D to continue): The default root password for V4 is Unidesk1. If not, use the instructions on the Installation topic under Secure the appliances to log in. If it does not and you had to do things differently, please share it in the comments below so every one can benefit. Cheers Benjamin It was an exact keyword match with my issue. But unfortunately, the client does not have the root password for the VDP appliance. I attempted to reset the VDP password using this link: So the implementation engineer must have changed the root password -but it was not properly documented. I can’t enter a root password as I have never configured one. Any hints? Did you check the doc. Or you can use this guide to boot in maintenance mode when the password is forgotten. This is a nice guide with screenshots. Now life is good again with vCenter. This has saved me a a massive headache. Thanks again. This blog was at the top of my Bing search (yes, Bing) and I’ve shared with my co-workers who have also occasionally experienced a failed vCenter Server Appliance fsck failure. Very helpful. Thanks for your help. Un mounted the drive and then used e2fsck command with following switches -y -v -f Thanks for awsome posts! I reinstalled vcenter 6 few times and it get stuck here and then my root password for maintenance don’t work. When I replaced it, I got this exact error. Your steps years later did the trick and my lab environment is coming back online. I had shell disabled for my VCSA instance, so I had to do a workaround of getting into shell through modifying the boot process and then run these commands. It ended up working in the end and saved my bacon. For instructions on how to get into shell from the boot menu, I used an article on resetting the root password for when it gets locked out (but I didn’t reset the root password.) Then it says something like this “The superblock could not be read or does not describe a correct ext2 filesystem. If the device is valid and it really contains an ext2 filesystem (and not swap ufs or something else), then the superblock is corrupt, and you might try running e2fsck with an alternate superblock: e2fsck -b 8193 Please repair manually and reboot. says: Notify me of follow-up comments by email. Can I perhaps edit the files of the OS without having a successful boot. Thanks, Justin I also ran fsck from the live cd against any of the R80.10 partitions that i could see. Once i was able to boot into maintenance mode with R80.10 then i ran fsck again. The box wont boot so, it would seem having this value default to '0', is a bit of a design flaw, I might even go as far to say a bug. Now that I'm in a jam, I cant boot up to edit that file. '4' should be the default. I'm left with trying to hack the vdmk which is 2 TB, or scrap it all, and a whole lot of valuable logs. On a different topic: is there a way in CheckMates portal to bookmark certain threads so it is easier to reference them later. May be even to attach personal tags to them? Where should I look? I followed sk94671 before it was updated to not include R80.10 and i think that was the issue. I believe the SK about this is internal only. I've been told the only solution is to get a DB and OS backup and rebuild the guest. So, I just boot with the install.iso. Would it be possible to add some more detail. I suppose I just instruct VMWare to boot off the.iso but do I have to do a new install on the old one, or is there some way I can drop into a cli mode ? I also ran fsck from the live cd against any of the R80.10 partitions that i could see. Once i was able to boot into maintenance mode with R80.10 then i ran fsck again. Did you reinstall, or did you perhaps have some other way to get to the cli. Thanks, Justin It talks about creating a physical USB disk. There is no.iso to download for VMWare ? You aren't going to use the Check Point iso's to do this. Don't install the BSD OS just boot to the live CD and you should be able to get to a terminal within the linux OS. I created a Live CD from. Booted off the.iso in VMWare, and mounted the drives. The system detected disk issues and automatically ran fsck. I ran fsck -y manually and went home for the night. The next day it looks like it finished, rebooted and the system came up as it should. What an ordeal. It didn't help that the log drive was 20 TB. Really hope Checkpoint fixes this issue so others using VMWare don't run into the same problem. Many thanks for all the assistance. If you have the grub.conf changed to a 5 second timeout then you can just enter maintenance mode without the live cd now. I've added that step to my build scripts for all my Vmware devices. Just got hit with this issue after some problems with our vm environment. I second the opinion that this should be considered as a bug, and a default of 5 seconds should be implemented.
