There is also a model year variation with different Cyrillic lettering on the nameplate and gridded pleather covering like the FED 3B that is even less attractive than this model.The body is slightly taller but it weighs about the same, and feels noticeably cheesier, like it’s made of cheaper or thinner metal. Even the lens mount feels a little cheap. At any rate, of the series, this is definitely the FED to take to the muddy soccer game in the rain, the one to schlep to the windy beach for those lovely sunset shots when you’d leave a more collectible camera at home. I haven’t used it enough myself to say whether I think it’s better than the earlier Industar-61 or the Industar-26M, which are both excellent. Suffice it to say that the FED factory in Kharkov was an orphanage-turned-work-commune named for Felix E. Dzerzhinsky, founder of the original Soviet Secret Police. It’s a very interestsing story, and you can read all about it on this excellent page, just make sure to come back when you’re done (I love that site!). Oh and put your wallet away or you’ll find yourself off bidding on FEDs before you know it. One FED is never enough! Still, it needed a minor rangefinder adjustment, both vertical and horizontal. Remove the metal nameplate by sliding to the left and lifting, careful not to lose the (easily breakable?) spring clip. Then remove the two obvious screws which hold down the faceplate. (You don’t need to do this to get to the adjustments, but I figure you may as well clean the glass while you’re in there.) The horizontal adjust is the recessed screw, the vertical adjust is the rotating collar around the round rangefinder window. Do the vertical first, then with the lens set to infinity, adjust the screw till the images are aligned on a distant object. I believe this adjustment is the same on the FED 3B.It’s in the manual but it bears repeating. In fact, go read the manual before even attempting to use the camera, the stuff about shutter speeds is both non-intuitive and critical to the proper operation of the camera. Changing film speeds without tensioning the shutter can damage the shutter! It doesn’t do the Grind Wind like the 3B and my Zenit, but odd nonetheless. The extra resistance seems to come from the integrated frame counter. Nice feature: the lever does stand off from the body, unlike the one on the 3B. Also has PC sync terminal, in a very odd spot, the center of the back of the top cap. That’s a new one on me. My relationship with rangefinder cameras involves carrying them around, setting their dials and switches, composing the scene in the viewfinder, finding focus plane, and pressing the shutter button. My personal greatest grievance with this camera is the shutter speed dial. Strange by design it is only useful while the camera is in a cocked position; it has a quirky rotating action while engaged. All of which is OK. The annoyingly-distracting misalignment in the dial numbers and stop marks, however, can not be forgiven. In my view, this is a shameful example of the lack of care towards usability, design, and finishing quality. Constructivism. This camera is built to take pictures. It doesn’t feel great in-hand, but it works well. Its appearance, however, does not suffer. Tudor 200 with FED 5b. It’s fairly rough and somewhat uneven to a demanding eye. During its mass production period from 1934-1990s, the FEDs went through five generations of major model change with each later generation resembles less and less to a screw mount Leica. Its operating mechanism is distinct from the other speeds and thus is placed separately on the shutter dial from the rest too. Operating the shutter on the FED 5B, like many other Russian rangefinders, requires the user to follow some “rules”. First of all, the shutter speed can only be set AFTER the shutter is cocked (i.e. after the film is winded). If the above is not being followed, the shutter could be critically damaged. As shown in the photo above, the frame counter is integrated into the winding lever which is why there is “big” circular housing on it. The “inner circle” dial on it is simply a reminder of what kind of film has been loaded. The light bulb, the sun and the circle with a dot represent tungsten-balanced, daylight-balanced and black-and-white (not sure about this one, any clarification will be appreciated) respectively. On the left side of the camera is the usual rewind lever. There is a film speed reminder dial placed around it. The GOST scale was an Soviet standard used between 1951 to 1987. I believe there should be conversion tables online but since the FED 5B does not have an internal meter, I never brother to look for one. I simply used a light-meter app on my smartphone during its test-run. While most people would welcome more metal parts in a camera for durability, this is the one part of the camera that should not be made in metal but soft rubber instead. The reason is simple: it scratches the lens of eye glasses and I am one of its victims! There is another control of the camera which is worth mentioned: the self-timer is initiated with the small button above the timing lever on the right of the lens. The “rules” on operating (and protecting) the shutter mentioned previously should also be observed in the same manner when using the self-timer. Since this is screw mount camera, there is no lens release button on the body. To remove the lens, the user simply “unscrew” it from the body. Removing the lens will also expose the body-lens rangefinder link at the upper rim of the mount (see photo below). The process is similar to the Rollei 35. However, the rewind lock-release is located as an concentric collar to the shutter button. Before it is pushed down for unlock, the user MUST first fire the shutter. This is another “strange” procedure that need to be followed in order to avoid damage to the shutter. It is also not collapsible and offers only full-stop clicks on the aperture ring. Anyway, how about some sample photos.For this particular FED, it is the former case but unfortunately, the rubber on the cloth shutter has been partially deteriorated due to age and also possibly the use of low-quality raw materials. I tried to patch it up first with liquid electrical tape (which peeled off after several shutter runs) and finally a thin piece of black tape (as shown in the photo below). In the Fed series the FED1 Fed 2 and Fed 3 were really good, smooth and reliable. They are also handy. Later they got a bit unwieldy. sp.I just want to make sure we are on the same page. On the back of my 5B the ring around eyepiece turns and allows vertical adjustment. If this is what you want to adjust than its is a real blessing (just discovered it myself).
