Our suggestion is one or both of the following:This may be your system admin, the consultant you used to set up your computing environment, etc. The consultation should involve questions relating to how much storage you require, the software mechanism that initiates and monitors the encryption process itself, etc. Some operating systems include rudimentary partitioning capabilities, but generally speaking there are more robust and capable solutions available from third parties.Do you need access to the data?A couple examples are www.stellarinfo.com, www.binarybiz.com, and www.prosofteng.com. There are many companies that provide these services, it is best to be selective. This email is not a referral or recommendation as we are not affiliated with these companies in any way.The following are the nominal transfer rates of each bus. All other factors inbetween can only serve to slow down the transfers further. The temperature should be about 20c above ambient temperature on use, and the disk itself is within its operating temperature to 60c. You can check the operating temperature using a SMART diagnostic utility. Modern disks drives have a diagnostic on board processor that monitors the disk during operation and records various diagnostic values including any detected failures. This diagostic method, S.M.A.R.T. For more information about SMART and its values, please see There are numerous SMART monitoring tools available- we recommend the following:On many models the power adapter has a power light, which will light up when connected to a live receptacle. Turn on the power switch. If the power LED does not light, the power supply or the drive may have failed. Regardless of which scheme is used, there is exactly the same amount of usable capacity, and no capacity is missing.Where can I get a replacement? We do so in order to qualify a broader selection of disk mechanisms at the best possible costs, while offering more specific requirement products to offer customers storage solutions more tailored to their needs. The rotational velocity is an aspect of the storage product's overall performance, and may be required for specific professional applications such as pro audio capture- consult your application vendor's system requirements for more information. For warranty information on a specific product, extended warranties and overnight exchange programs please consult your MicroNet or Fantom Drives dealer or the individual product pages on this website for more information. For these cases, the eSATA controller will have either a BIOS utility or a software RAID configuration utility that will need to be configured prior to use.You may require an updated firmware to enable the eSATA card.http://www.bouwdata.net/evenement/dell-se198wfp-service-manual In the case of Dell Poweredge 2x50 servers, it has been reported that the Micronet eSATA card is only supported on the 4 lane (4x) slot and not the 8 lane (8x) slots. Verify that the MicroNet device power up, and the diagnostic light on the terminator is on. Consult your HBA vendor for more information on this procedure. If the SCSI HBA recognizes the device, proceed to step 7. If the disk is not recognized, check that your SCSI host bus adapter and the MicroNet device have different SCSI IDs.If the device worked before it may be defective. If you get to a point to where if you add another device, it no longer functions properly- you need to verify your SCSI setup against SCSI guidelines. This will only cease to work if you change something in your system software, or the physical setup of your bus. If this happens, you will need to repeat the above troubleshooting steps. Check for possible SCSI ID conflicts. Be aware that the internal hard drive the internal CD ROM are likely sharing the SCSI bus even if they're inside your computer. If it works, you have an unstable SCSI bus.PASSIVE terminators will only absorb signal, preventing the reflection back along the bus but offering no stabilization of signal voltage. As the lengths of cable increase, the voltage at each device drops. An active terminator at the end of the bus will help to insure there is adequate voltage along the chain MicroNet includes an Active multimode terminator with every MicroNet SCSI device, which must be plugged in to the second connector of the last SCSIIf you know the name and password for an administrator; click the lock icon (Tiger and prior) and enter the information. Make sure no other management connections are active, and retry to access the unit. The disk will function correctly but at a speed lower then its capability.MicroNet does not provide any additional drivers for specific software products.Because of modern low-friction bearings and lubricants, once you get the disk spinning up to speed, it takes very little energy to keep it spinning. However, after you turn the disk off and let it spin down, it requires quite a bit of energy to rapidly bring it back up to operating velocity, and puts the disk under strain of acceleration. This strain can shorten the disk's life expectancy, costs power, and gives you a performance hit as the disk must be spun up before access. This is a convenient substitute for turning off the disconnecting the disk. Also, some computers and Operating system combinations have trouble accessing disks after issuing wake up commands.Check with your eSATA host bus adapter vendor for updated drivers.NOTE: If you are re-attaching a drive after a remove operation as explained above, you must make sure that the HD is power cycled (power cable unplugged) before re-attaching the HD serial data cable.A full format on a 2TB disk can take overnight to format on a slow computer. This drive contains dual hard drives, allowing for several configurations, depending on your needs and preferences. I chose the default Raid 0 settings, for maximum storage capacity and speed. If this is your choice, just plug it in and turn it on. Windows recognized the drive immediately, and it was ready to transfer files. I work with a lot of large HD video files, and a fast transfer rate is important to me. The actual transfer rate of this drive is better than 5GB in under a minute, for single large files. Of course, large files with multiple items take a little longer, but still very fast. I transferred one of my ebook folders, with over 11,000 items (13GB) in just a few minutes.I would recommemd this drive to anyone who needs a large storage solution, with fast transfer rates. Shipping time was phenomenal as well; about 18 hours, with 1 day shipping. Reviewed in the United States on April 10, 2012 I wanted to use RAID 1 on my main MAC used for critical projects. The drive worked fine on the MAC but kept vanishing in Finder, after forcibly un-mounting itself without warning or reason. It did this several times over 4 weeks, each time needing a power cycle of the drive to get it to mount again. The last time this happened it would not remount, and disk utility reported all was lost, despite all my actions. I was fortunate to read many forums and find Terminal commands to forcibly mount the drive again, recover my data, and move it to a new G-Technology G-DRIVE, and give up on cheap hardware RAID for now. Remember your MAC can do software RAID to two external drives, mirroring one to the other, and they can be different drives. It's clear there is a firmware issue with this drive, at least on MAC OSX. I think it may be connected to power management. i.e. When your MAC puts the disks into idle mode. Anyway, data storage is critical, and these drives cannot be trusted. I suppose the old adage 'you get what you pay for' is very true. Please try again later. From the United StatesIt sits net to my computer and has functioned as my editing drive for video on my computer. I do wish it had more connections than just usb 3.0, but heck that's what I bought it for. I have also forgotten to turn this thing off numerous times and it still runs clean. Recommended if you get a good one I guess. I only say this because of the other reviews, but my experience has been quite favorable. Please try again later. Please try again later. Ganahl Family 1.0 out of 5 stars I own 4 other Fantom Drives, a 500 GB, a 1TB, a 2 TB, a 4 TB and all of them work flawlessly, but this drive starts grinding, and vibrating, and then disappears from the finder. I'm on OS X 10.7.5, and using it exclusively for Time Machine backups which are essential in my line of business. It's a real shame that they seem to have got this one drive completely wrong. I've sent it back for repairs twice now, and they've replaced the controller board twice. I think I'm going to ask for a refund. Please try again later. Please try again later. JB 1.0 out of 5 stars When I first got it I was very impressed with it, it's made of metal, seems very study and rugged. For the first week or two it worked great. Then, without warning, it became unusable. Every time I plugged it into my computer, I would get a message saying the drive needed formatted before use. Unfortunately I already had over a TB of data on the drive, which is now lost. What good is a backup hard drive if it's completely unreliable. Then they suggested I reformat it and use it again, though with no fix for the problem it would just keep happening again. So no thanks Fantom, I'm not going to waste more money on a gamble to maybe get my data back, and I'm sure not going to keep using a brand new hard drive that failed in less than 1 month. I'm returning this and using the money to get a different external hard drive from a different manufacturer. Please try again later. Please try again later. Glenn 5.0 out of 5 stars The only confusion was on which way the switches needed to be in to put it into Raid 1. The Manual could be a little clearer on this item. But it was very simple to figure out. I tried the first setting, and it was wrong, ( both switches up). I then tried both switches down, and that did the tried. The Drive was very quick on switching raid configuration. Some raid drives I used, when you switch from Raid-0 (normal way most raid drives are shipped) to Raid-1 Mirrored, It can take a while for the drive to reformat. Not this drive. Reformatting to raid-1 was very quick., and painless. Please try again later. Please try again later. JDT 1.0 out of 5 stars Then you don't list this in your website FAQ, and customers have to wait 3 days for an email response? Losers. Well, I had intended to send it back, but the Makers got back to me with a link to the firmware. I then attempted to install it, but when I tried reconnecting the drive, it started smoking when I plugged it into power. Maybe this was a good thing. I can only imagine this happening later on, and losing access to all my data. Lesson Learned: Do not buy un-vetted Hard Drives. Please try again later. Please try again later. Jesse 1.0 out of 5 stars My dreams were quickly dashed when I opened the box and plugged the provided USB cable into my UX31's USB3 port, only to find that it was unrecognized. Actually, Windows felt as though the drive needed to be formatted, even though Fantom sends the drive pre-formatted with NTFS. After Windows failed to format the drive, I plugged it into my USB2 port. After only two days of light use, Windows experienced the same issues on USB2 as it did with the initial attempt at USB3. I promptly returned the drive for a full refund. Thanks Amazon! Please try again later. Please try again later. Please try again later. Try saving a file and it may, or may not, or it may only save part of the file.now, you would think with a WIN7 and USB 3.0 connection, it just might work. Nope, while the price is good, what you will be buying is a very expense and small boat anchor. Find another drive, as this one just keeps failing. I would try to transfer data to it and could never get over 800GB copied before it would just stop copying and tell me that the destination path did not exist. It would somehow reformat itself to RAW from NTFS and then I couldn't write to it anymore. It did this 4 times. I kept messing with it because I was stubborn enough to keep trying new things to try to get it to work, but the thing is just defective, an that's all there is to it. The tell tale sign that it was going to go belly up again was that the data transfer speed would slowly decrease until it would finally give the write destination error. Just some additional info, I had the dip switches set to RAID 0 and I was running Windows Vista 64-Bit.Please try again later. Please try again later. ClayCope 5.0 out of 5 stars I leave it connected to my pc and it has become my media storage drive (loads of movies and videos). The unit I ordered came with a Samsung drive inside, not WD like others have received. I am planning to purchase a second unit to backup my first and would highly recommend it to others in need or additional storage space (via eSATA for the speed) or a backup drive.I bought this disk for thanksgiving. Thought I should use it for a while before I write a review. Firstly, it was very easy to setup on my windows 7 pc. Definition of plug n play. I would say its worth the buy(of course only if your computer supports eSata). The disk makes a small noise when its powered on, otherwise its super quiet. The drive remains relatively cool and quiet even after heavy use. I've kept the drive on for almost 2 days straight and I was transferring most of my data to this hd. So this was close to the maximum speed achievable at that point. I am sure as the drive is used regularly (as it is indexed and optimized, there should be an improvement). I am happy with this speed for now, a massive upgrade over USB at least. As for the USB, I cannot go back to USB 2.0 now. It just feels too slow. I would recommend this disk for its price and eSata feature. Word of Warning: Be sure to check if your computer supports eSata first and your OS has the eSata drivers. I had Windows 7, so the drivers were found automatically, but while searching for better eSata drivers I thought there was a scarcity of information or sources for eSata drivers. The drives have been working flawlessly since I bought it, and I don't have to think about it, everything just works. UPDATE: seven years later, still fine. I just tried to add a 4TB drive to it, and it appears that it won't work. Let me know if you are able to get that working.I have only used it as an eSata drive. Didn't need to go the USB route. Even though the internal drive is WD evidently Micronet has figured out the eSata interface. I had previously bought a WD drive that was supposedly eSata capable but I continuously had problems with it and ended up using it as an USB drive. Same cable, same eSata connection the Fantom works perfectly and is MUCH faster than USB. This is my second Fantom eSata drive. One is 1T and this one is 2T. For the money you can't beat Micronet if you want reliable eSata external HDs.The price seemed almost too good to be true, even from Amazon. And I had just had a negative experience with a similar, though much lower capacity, drive (though admittedly my fault, at least when all is said and done). There's gotta be something wrong. Well, not that I can see. The unit not only performs as expected, but actually has several nice features lacking in my previous unit (besides double the capacity of course). And last, but not least, a neat little stand so you can place it vertically instead of horizontally to save space, always important in my cramped little quarters.
