Vendor Response By NCH Software on December 11, 2019 Hi Diana. Thank you for contacting us. Our Registration Support Team will be happy to re-send your registration code and installation file to the software you previously purchased without having to to purchase a different license. We are sorry for any frustrations this may have caused. You can contact our Registration Support Team here. No tool can much up to the functionality that comes with it. I would advice an upcoming transcriber to give it a shot. Pros: My most favorite thing about Express Scribe is that it has many features that help you work faster. I think my favorite feature is the setting that allows you to 'auto backstep on stop.' This allows you to automatically rewind a word or two from where you left off. I have always loved this feature because it allows you to have a smooth continuity as you are transcribing.Another thing I like about Express Scribe is that it easy to use. The software is less than 1 MB and the process of installing it is very starting forward and first. Once you have it installed, it is just a matter of dragging and dropping an audio file into the, and you can begin transcribing immediately. Since Express scribe is a desktop application, you do not need an internet connection to use the software. As a transcriber, this can significantly reduce your data costs. Cons: The challenge I have always had with Express Scribe is that some of its shortcuts interfere with the application's shortcuts on your machine. For example, in Microsoft Powerpoint, the key F5 is for switching to slide mode but it doesn't work if Express Scribe is on since the same key is a shortcut to do something else in Express Scribe. Another challenge with Express Scribe is that the writing interface doesn't have auto correct options like those of word. This forces you to copy paste your work to another application for editing and proofreading.http://es21sys.com/userfiles/educational-review-manual-in-neurology.xml I was on hold 2 hours, then gave up” Pros: The free version works for what I need. I was able to transcribe all of my info just fine. Cons: I lost all my data on the free download. The whole thing disappeared. It's a scam to get me to buy. If you do download the free version, which isn't bad, definitely save to a word doc frequently. It seems the whole thing could disappear at any time. Vendor Response By NCH Software on December 13, 2019 Hello Kate. We are very sorry to hear you had a negative experience with our app. Some functions in our app do require an upgrade to the full version, however many features are completely free forever. We appreciate your feedback. If you have any further questions or concerns, our Support team will be more than happy to help you here. It's reliable, customizable, and has a ton of features and options, although I only use a fraction of them. The customer support has been very good, although hardly needed, and the website offers help and tutorials. My overall experience with it has been excellent. Pros: Express Scribe is loaded with features and options, more than I have ever needed to use in my work, but the ones I use the most are the following. It accepts a wide variety of file formats. It loads multiple files at once, so that I can work efficiently through a list, which is especially useful when I have a lot of shorter audio files. It comes with built-in tools for adjusting the audio quality under the Playback tab, where I particularly use the Clarity Low Frequency Cut-Off tool to improve speakers' voices. I have also found that setting Volume Auto-Adjust (range compression) to None gives me the clearest sound with the least static. Another useful feature is the ability to bookmark speakers in the audio file. Setting up a foot pedal connection was easy, although I like Express Scribe's ability to control the audio with function keys if the foot pedal develops problems.http://eco-region31.ru/dat-72-manual And, finally, I find the interface is easy for me to navigate. Cons: I would like the ability to place time stamps with a function key. I have tried to follow the time stamp shortcut instructions provided by NCH, but have not been able to use it well, so I usually insert time stamps during the proofing stage using another transcription software program that does have that feature. Another issue for a long time was that audio played in Express Scribe seemed to have higher levels of background static than the same audio played in other transcription programs. I was finally able to resolve this issue by setting the Volume Auto-Adjust (range compression) to None, as I mentioned above. I had been relying on the default setting (which I believe was Strong) and didn't realize what a difference it would make to the clarity -- at least to my ears. From about 2009-2011, I ran Express Scribe in WINE in a Linux host operating system for at least 2 years and did encounter a number of compatibility problems. Things may have improved dramatically since then owing to great improvements in WINE. It seems fairly priced for a professional software too. Overall, Express Scribe is an outstanding tool for transcription Pros: During my graduate work, I relied on Express Scribe to help transcribe hundreds of hours of audio and video interviews. Especially useful are the program's hotkey controls that enable the user to back up the recording by increments that the user can select. This is extremely useful for reviewing recorded segments that are difficult to understand. Express Scribe supports all but the most obscure audio formats - a fact that is exceedingly helpful when dealing with student assignments that have been recorded on a wide range of mobile phones and mp3 devices. Users can use a hot-key to automatically insert time stamps throughout the transcript, or manually insert timestamps at key points though the document. The use of timestamps allows users to correlate the audio track with the exact position on the written transcript. Though I have never used a control pedal with Express Scribe, many times I wished that I had one. Use of a control pedal would free up the user's hands to focus more on typing transcripts. Cons: Express Scribe is not available in a native version for Linux. However, Express Scribe can run in Linux using the WINE Emulator. Keep your original receipt for the software and installation codes. If you reinstall your operating system, you may encounter problems reactivating Express Scribe. And for good reason, NCH’s Express Scribe is possibly one of the best transcription playback software available on the planet. Individuals and online transcription services the world over rely on Express Scribe. Can Express Scribe Transcribe Your Files Automatically. Just to clear any confusion. It is NOT a transcription speech recognition software. While it can work with speech recognition software, it cannot transcribe files itself. We’ve done an in-depth post on the best transcription speech recognition software for 2019. It can look daunting to someone absolutely new to the field of audio transcription. Which is why we’ve made this post to help guide you on how to use Express Scribe efficiently to save time and money for yourself. Why is Express Scribe one of the Best Transcription Playback Software. It is quick to download and install It can play both audio and video files You can assign keyboard hotkeys for a variety of functions It’s very easy and quick to set up foot pedals for playback It supports a wide range of audio and video formats You can dock your analog or digital recorders to load recordings straight away You can connect it to your FTP to load files directly You can email transcripts from the software straight to clients It works with several different office software like MS Word It works with transcription speech recognition software Understanding How to Use Express Scribe The screenshot below explains the various options you see in the Express Scribe interface upon installation. Please note that this screenshot is of a recent version of Express Scribe. To check how to use express scribe for the latest version, keep an eye on their website. Press and hold F7 to rewind and F8 to forward. BONUS TIP: How to use Express Scribe for efficiency. For a video, see below: That’s the basic gist of it. However the software is more versatile than that and gives you tons of other options that we’ll further explore in this post. Hot-Keys are Great for Proofreading, but not for Transcribing Using hot-keys works great if you’re proofreading a transcript using a word processing software like Microsoft Word. Or if you want a free word processor, there’s the open source OpenOffice. But if you want to transcribe, i.e. type in a document while listening, using hot-keys is definitely not the quickest or the most efficient way. To transcribe a 1 hour audio file with hot-keys, it takes about 8-10 hours, depending on your typing speed and proficiency. You ideally want to spend most of your time typing during those 8-10 hours. Otherwise it adds more time. Problem is you don’t catch everything at the first try, unless you’ve got superhuman typing and listening skills. So, there will be a lot of going back and forth. How to use Express Scribe to Save Time. If your fingers leave the typing area and use the hot-keys to play, pause, rewind and forward etc.Which is why professional transcribers or transcription services use a foot pedal to control playback. A foot pedal can shave 1-3 hours off your total transcription time easily. So, a 1 hour audio file takes only around 6-7 hours instead of 8-10 hours without a foot pedal. If you’re not going to be doing this often, investing in a foot pedal makes no sense. At which point you’re better off giving your files to an audio transcription service like ours and have your peace of mind and time to spend on something more productive. Transcription Services Quote How to Use Express Scribe with a Foot Pedal Transcription foot pedals are a great way to control playback with your feet, leaving your hands free to only type. For someone new to the field of audio transcription, this may not seem like a big deal. But trust us, it makes a huge difference to your overall speed, accuracy and efficiency. Compared to using hot-keys to control playback, by using a foot pedal you can easily shave off 1-2 hours of the overall transcription time. Transcription foot pedals are not widely sold around the world, so you won’t find them at your local gadget shops. Online is your best bet. One of the best selling foot pedals VEC’s Infinity (pictured below) is available on their website, along with Amazon USA and Amazon UK. How to Use Express Scribe with a Foot Pedal. Steps Below: Once you’ve bought one from Amazon or their own website, connect it to your computer or laptop via USB (or the port of your choice). Open Express Scribe. Make sure your foot pedal is connected to your computer before clicking Next. Your USB foot pedal should show up in the list of “Plug and Play” devices. If not, you’ll have to switch to the Legacy tab and select the appropriate option. Once you’ve selected the correct option, you should get to the “Controller Properties” page. You should see the company name, model, interface, buttons etc.Check “Enable tap lock” under the Tap lock option. The reason we choose “enable tap lock” is so that once you press the play pedal, it keeps playing until you press it again. This saves time and is hassle free. Get an Online Transcription Quote How to Use Express Scribe to Add Time Stamps. Or if you’re doing the transcription yourself, time stamps come handy to do a final transcript review to improve accuracy. One quick way is to just look at the minimized Express Scribe window and type the time in. But that may not be the most accurate or efficient way, especially if you have to do it often. Steps below explain how to use Express Scribe to copy and insert accurate time stamps using the hot-key function in your text: Open Express Scribe. Click on Options, and then System-Wide-Hot-Keys. Which should open the following dialog box: Check the Enable system-wide hot-keys option at the top if not already checked. Now you can add, change and delete key commands. Click on the Add button, it will open a dialog called Add New Hot-Key. From the drop-down list under Command, select Copy Time. Once you’ve done that, click on the Change button under Hot-Key. It will open a Press Key dialog and ask you to Press a key or a key combination. Once you are done, click on OK, and same on the Options window as well. Voila, we are done! If you can’t be bothered to time stamp your document, we can do it for you. And at no extra charge on top of transcription. Get a Quote for Transcription Services How to Use Express Scribe for a Finished Transcript. While Express Scribe has the option to type your text in the software itself, we don’t recommend doing this. That’s because there is no way to save that text. So, if you accidentally close the window, or your computer shuts down, or there’s a powercut, say bye-bye to all your hard work. Which is why you’re better off using word processing software like Microsoft Word, OpenOffice, or even the Rich Text Format or Notepad that come standard with Windows or TextEdit with Mac. I wish there was a way to automatically put brackets around it when we paste it into the document. This helps me though as I was one that was reading it off the bottom of Express Scribe. Thanks again! Ashish Sebastian June 27, 2017 at 12:41 pm - Reply You’re very welcome, Debbie. We’re glad it helped you.:) Sam March 24, 2018 at 1:42 am - Reply Hi, I am having difficulty understanding exactly how to insert a timestamp, let’s say, every 10 seconds, because that is what my client has asked me to do and, in the past, I have had to do it the very long way and that is, of course, to listen to the audio all over again with my Word document up and inserting a timestamp every 10 seconds, MANUALLY. This video, and every other link I’ve clicked on has been very helpful in assisting me to allot the time code command to the F1 key, however, I still do hear or read anywhere how to automatically add a timestamp every 10 seconds. Thank you! Ashish Sebastian June 24, 2018 at 5:28 pm - Reply Hi Sam, Apologies for such a late reply to your query. Your comment for some reason got buried under a huge load of spam. To answer your question, I don’t think we can automatically insert a time stamp every 10 seconds, at least not with Express Scribe. Hank Sheffer October 2, 2020 at 11:19 pm - Reply I am currently using Express Scribe for audio files and manually transcribing the files. I just started using the Speech To Text feature but it is horribly inaccurate. How do I train it to be more accurate. Can I or do I need another program?? I am not the one dictating so they are audio files, is this even possible. Any help or guidance would be much appreciated. Ashish Sebastian October 3, 2020 at 9:25 am - Reply Hi Hank, Thanks for your comment. Unfortunately a lot of speech to text software is horribly inaccurate, unless you speak super slowly to it like you would to a baby, be really close to the microphone, and have absolutely no background noise. So, single speaker audio works best. I don’t think any speech to text software does a good job on a normal interview with 2 or more people. Also, I’m not sure you can train Express Scribe. This eliminates the frustration of constantly using your mouse to start and stop the audio. I’ve heard several people, initially skeptical, say they don’t know how they ever managed to transcribe without one. Many of today’s foot pedals, like the popular Infinity USB, are plug and play, so you can benefit from the extra speed boost immediately. Used properly, they can increase your typing speed by an estimated 30. For example, you might tell the program to expand “tsm” to “thanks so much.” You can ask the software to scan specific documents to learn any jargon and unconventional spellings that you use often. I’ve used several versions, and everything from version 11 onward works well. Here are some quick tips for further improving your transcription efficiency. This feature works by eliminating sound below a certain volume threshold. It’s useful for when the background noise is quieter than the speakers. This feature comes in handy when you’ve maxed out the volume controls on your computer and you’re still straining to hear the audio. Experiment with this feature on “muddy” sounding files, when the background noise is competing with the speakers. Since I’m using Express Scribe, I’ll use it as an example here, but you can do this with any good transcription program. Using the built-in autocorrect function on your PC or Mac’s word processing program, you can automatically insert generic speaker labels, such as Speaker 1: and Speaker 2: tags. Click on “AutoCorrect Options.” Here, you can enter shorthand text, which will be replaced with text of your choice whenever you press space or tab. Click “Add,” and then click “OK.” I could use the shorthand “sq” for a Speaker 2: tag, and so on. I hope you find them useful when it comes to transcribing videos, so you have more time to focus on creating good stuff.
