Workhog Chargers are fully automatic, ferroresonant chargers that provide maximum battery protection with added flexibility using a universal control board. Workhogs have two control board options: It uses a microprocessor to control current (amperes) during its unique charging cycle and adjust to meet the requirements of each battery. Upon battery connection, the microprocessor runs an evaluation period. It checks itself, the charger and actually interrogates the battery. The Loadhog will regulate the starting and finishing current for complete charge. Undercharging or harmful overcharging does not occur. Every battery has its own optimum charging capacity, and only the Exide Depth Charger accounts for the difference. Environment, basic education, health, women empowerment and community development continues to remain the main pillars of Exide's CSR philosophy, even before the passing of the Companies Act, 2013. Keep the vent plugs loose in position, to avoid explosions. Compressed air can be used for mixing but care should be taken to trap oil acid to be used. The voltage observed is not that important at this point. Also check for any leakage visible after filling. Top up again with acid, same as filling-in sp. Gravity. In our tropical country advisable to charge in single step, especially in summerGravity, voltage and the electrolyte temperature of cells, initially every 4 hourly and every hourly, after the cell voltage reaches 2.4 VPC. When on charge for proper mixing, adjust sp. Gravity to the service gravity corrected to 270 c. As applicable with respective batteries. Adjust the sp. Gravity to the service gravity at 270 c as applicable. Stop the charging and allow the batteries to cool, before commissioning. This causes variation of sp. To take care, the battery bank is to be put on constant current charging at 6 of rated capacity up to 2.75VPC, followed by an extended charge for 12 to 24 hours on constant current charging at 3 of rated capacity. All the cells will show approximately same sp. Gravity and voltage. Since low current is given during 3 rated amps of the Ah capacity, this will not affect the activated portion of the plates, but will remove the patches of sulphate from the plates back to the solution, increasing the sp. Gravity of cells. Therefore, it is important to give equalising charge, once in a year, if not earlier. It also causes spillage of water and acid and spoils environment. Installation is also carried out on request. All parts are manufactures in acid proof plastic material. The float raises and closes the valve in the plug by 2.5:1 level action. When the electrolyte level drops the float operated valve will open automatically. By slowly building up an electric current inside the dead battery cells, the battery charger is able to breathe new life into an old battery, so long as the battery is viable. Connecting and using an Exide battery charger is an easy process that requires no special skills or training. Step 1 Disconnect the battery from the engine. Remove the red, positive battery cable first, then disconnect the black, negative cable. With both cables disconnected, lift the battery away and take it to an area where it can be connected to the Exide battery charger. Step 2 Connect the charging cables to the battery. The Exide battery charger has two cables with large alligator clips at the end, similar to a set of automotive jumper cables. Connect the black clip to the negative terminal on the battery, then clip the red connector to the positive terminal on the battery. Turn the knob so that it points to the corresponding battery size. Step 4 Plug the Exide battery charger into an electrical outlet and set the charge time. This will vary depending on the size of the battery and whether or not it has a partial charge. Typical charge times range from eight to 12 hours, although a car battery that is completely drained may require as much as 24 hours to receive a full charge. The battery charger has safeguards to prevent overcharging, so do not worry about the battery being charged prior to the charge time expiring. Unplug the Exide battery charger from the wall and remove the clamps from the terminals. Connect the negative cable first, then the positive. Tip An Exide battery charger can recharge any battery brand, whether the battery is manufactured by Exide or by another company. Even a slightly discharged battery can give a false reading and deem the battery faulty when all that is required is a recharge. There are many different types of testing equipment available. A digital battery tester is the preferred option as they are safe, easy to use and offer a quick diagnosis of the condition of the battery. Fixed and adjustable load testers, voltmeters, hydrometers and discharge testers can also be used, however correct training is required prior to using any of these testers to prevent personal injury or damage to the vehicle. The state-of-charge of a lead acid battery can be determined by the specific gravity (SG) of the electrolyte (its density compared to a reference such as water). The SG can be measured directly with a hydrometer or indirectly by the stabilised voltage with a voltmeter. Please note the temperature of the acid affects the result. Microprocessor controlled digital battery testers are easy to use, very safe and can help determine early battery failure. The tester works by transmitting a small signal through the battery that uses measurements of conductance or resistance (impedance) to indicate battery condition. Most models provide battery, starting and charging tests. Printer options enable results to be given to the customer. This load however does create a spark risk if leads are connected to corroded or loose terminals. If the voltage reads above 9.6 volts the battery is ok. For example a battery that has a CCA rating of 600 should be tested at 300CCA for 15 seconds. If the result is under 9.6V the battery is not good and may not crank the engine. It is always recommended that you check the individual manufacturer’s specifications. The biggest concern with this type of tester is the time it takes to perform the test. The amount of energy necessary for complete recharge depends on the depth of discharge, rate of recharge and temperature. Typically 110 - 150 of the discharged ampere-hours depending on battery type must be returned to the battery to achieve full recharge. It is highly recommended to wear PPE (Personal Protection Equipment) including safety glasses, chemical resistant gloves and overalls. When choosing a battery charger, it is important to select a charger that delivers the specified charging voltage and current to suit the battery type. Flooded, Absorbed Glass Mat (AGM) and Gel battery types require different charging specifications to provide optimum performance and service life. Always keep inside the parameters outlined in the below table. Failure to do so can result in permanent damage to the battery. For example if you want to charge a 100Ah battery, the recommended charger current for this battery would be 10 Amps. Slow charging is the best way to recharge a lead acid battery. Fast charging a lead acid battery by increasing the recommended amperes may cause undue stress and shorten battery life. This coefficient factor can be between 110 to 150. The constant charge and discharge eventually leads to failure. Components corrode over time, electrical shorts occur and vibration causes damage; all eventually causing failure. Overcharging and undercharging of a battery will also have a bearing on battery life. Overcharge condition may be due to incorrect voltage setting, low voltage caused by heat or internal defects, or old age deterioration. This can indicate overcharging or overfilling. This can cause failure from vibration. This can also cause failure. A low Specific Gravity reading of 1.220 or less in all cells indicates a discharged battery and it must be charged before further examination and testing can occur. The discharged condition may be due to a problem in the electrical system (slipping alternator belt, faulty regulator or alternator, high resistance due to corrosion). Internal shorts may also be due to manufacturing defects or shorts through the ageing process or vibration damage. The usual warning is a slower than normal battery ability to crank the engine. It’s good public relations and if the battery is near failure, it may avoid the inconvenience of a roadside breakdown. Always use an approved battery clamp to limit vibration. Century batteries are built tough, using robust internal components to resist damage through abrasion and puncture from vehicle vibration. It’s impossible to know exactly when a battery might fail. A slow starting engine is sometimes an indication. Regular battery checks are always advised. Battery failure can be attributed to various factors, however the causes of failure fall under two distinct categories: manufacturing and non-manufacturing faults. Century’s stringent quality assurance and inspection processes demanded by leading vehicle manufacturers ensure genuine manufacturing faults in Century Batteries are negligible. They are often attributed to a problem with the vehicle’s electrical system, its operation or the battery application. Over time this leads to a point where the battery will no longer be able to start a vehicle. High temperature will accelerate the degradation rates. Check our easy to follow guide.
