For context, the entire motherboard is approximately the size of a standard DVD case, if not a bit smaller. The system is fully compatible across a variety of platforms, including Linux and Microsoft OS, and the Via EPIA packs a bevy of integrated peripherals into one of the smallest packages available with these specs. Ultra-compact and highly integrated, the overall multimedia experience that this motherboard provides is bolstered further by 5.1-channel audio output, allowing for clearer and better performance. Additional software features on this motherboard include Flash virus protection and Chassis intrusion detection. The motherboard also includes 1 serial panel, 1 IDE cable, and 1 floppy cable as well as FliteDeck software to get you up and running. Even though its small size is the Via’s most obvious initial advantage, the technology in the EPIA motherboard is fluid enough for a variety of uses. This is an adaptable machine that addresses many of the performance issues of similarly sized motherboards. The EPIA-M10000G also manages to do all this while conforming to a Mini-ITX standard, which can make this an appropriate machine for everything from home entertainment setups to an office environment. Even though the VIA does have a legacy floppy connector on it, the entire board only has four layers. Additionally, the EPIA includes a standard VGA and S-video output to cover all your video needs. Because of the unit’s PCI slot, there is plenty of flexibility in terms of upgrades when it comes to multimedia graphics. From the layout of the motherboard to the connectivity to the graphic processing capabilities, this motherboard is ideal for experimentation, as well as further integration down the road. Not having (good enough) support for open-source operating systems is shooting yourself in the foot with this sort of product.VIA's support for Linux is CRAP. I don't just mean providing barely adequate drivers, I mean not working with the community to produce drivers at all. We have to reverse engineer and develop our own from scratch. While both AMD and Intel are providing documentation specs, starting community driver projects, and even contributing direct code back, VIA is taking the Nvidia approach of just providing drivers. The biggest difference here, is that Nvidia actually does a decent job with their drivers, while VIA doesn't seem to give a damn. (Its been a couple of years now, and they have made little attempt to improve). Stuff that doesn't need much CPU grunt to run or doesn't require VIA IGP's features. Mostly “set and forget” (in a physical sense), while remotely admin'ing them. The only worthwhile solution coming from VIA is their upcoming Isaiah processor. Said to be 2 to 4 times the performance of the current C7, while producing the same thermal footprint. I estimate that it'll be approx clock for clock equal to PIII, but still slower than Pentium-M, A64, Sempron, Celeron (Core-based), etc, etc. Personally, I wouldn't bother with VIA's IGPs. They're a waste of time. You're better off waiting for Intel's Silverthorne or even Diamondville. Regardless, the budget and embedded markets is about to explode with lots of different options to choose from!:mexican:If you drop it right down to 480p type resolutions, and are running nothing else you might have some joy. We haven’t done any testing with gentoo linux. But, we plan on doing some testing with Ubuntu. I came to the conclusion that using a USB dvd drive to set things up would be the best, given the sharing of the cf card with one of the ide devices. An other reason is the tight fit of a dvd drive in the chenbro box ( and it saves power ). You only need a dvd drive for install OS. Having a dvd and hdd on EDI and a cf card inserted does not work. Plan to use the hdd as starting point to trim down gentoo linux to make it fit on a cf drive. Ben February 20, 2008 at 11:22 am Does anyone know what LVDS add on board this neads to drive an 18bit screen. As long as the CF card does not stick out above the connector. Kristina February 20, 2008 at 2:43 pm Hi Ben, On VIA’s Web site:, you can find the information you need. We don’t actually carry the LVDS-08 add-on module. If you are interested in ordering it from us, please contact one of our sales associates and we’ll see what we can do.I am specifically interested in using this board in a silent NAS setup. I am hoping to see better than 15Megs per second write and 24Megs per second reads. It would also be nice to see the 1.0 vs 1.8 GHz differences and RAID.When i’ve a stable setup i’ll post some benchmarks. However, as I will be running linux (probably ubuntu) I am concerned about VIA’s drivers. Any tests with those. Kristina March 24, 2008 at 4:14 pm Hi Eli, Hi Tim, We are looking into your requests. Give us a few more days to investigate the situations. TIm Doty March 25, 2008 at 6:03 pm I appreciate it and can wait. DRI is required for XvMC, so MPEG acceleration features did not function correctly. I also tested with the openChrome driver, however, the display was garbled. This was with svn revision 500. I did not test acceleration features since basic output did not appear as it should have. These are disappointing results. Note that there are probably other things to try, but, unfortunately, I did not have the time to conduct further testing right now. -Forest TIm Doty April 1, 2008 at 5:04 pm Forest, thanks for testing — you are right, those are very disappointing results. And, as Eli mentioned, Via seems to have no interest in linux other than to claim they support it. A real shame. mfp April 14, 2008 at 12:34 am Hi, Is it possible to downclock the CPU to safely turn off the cpu fan when needed? (I need to use it in two environments and one of those needs noiseless operations) And what about the PCIe connector: does it support video cards only or it is possible to use other cards too (eg: x1 adapters). Tom April 17, 2008 at 9:31 am Thank you for you comment. The SN’s BIOS doesn’t include the CPU Frequency Control feature, but there is a way to under-clock you CPU with software(freeware) called Notebook Hardware Control. Under-clocking your CPU to 800MHz should cut the power consumption significantly.I’m not 100 sure if you can run without a fan, but it’s worth trying. Good luck, Tom mike May 5, 2008 at 12:12 am Is the PCIe able to support hard drive controllers and RAID cards or just graphics cards. I’ve heard some say you can, some say only 1x will work, and some say it won’t from various forums. has anyone tried it. Doru May 5, 2008 at 2:20 pm has anyone tested the ethernet speed under linux.I plann to use this as a firewall between mutiple VLANs on the gbit eth and i need it to be able to handle at least 2-3-400Mbps of traffic.Likely Linux, but most of the time it would be running over XDMCP. SSH acceleration would be nice as well. This would be acting as a frontend machine for a much hotter, noisier geophysics processing machine in a rack down the hall that I don’t want in my office. Polan May 15, 2008 at 1:26 am Hi all I emailed VIA about the PCI-E speeds. They said they’ve tested x1 and x16 speeds with it but not others. Not ideal seeing as I was thinking of using this board with a 4x 3ware RAID card. Anyone have experience with such a setup. Jlexa May 16, 2008 at 11:45 am I was also hoping to use that board with 9650SE that requires 4x PCIE Jlexa May 23, 2008 at 9:47 am There is a post on TKArena: Dan May 25, 2008 at 2:47 am FYI, this board (in this case the SN10000eg version) fits beautifully in the Morex T-3310 case, with a CF card installed. I’ve been running this arrangement for a month now. It looks like it’d go in though. The GigE uses the via-velocity driver which seems to be a little on the primitive side; under extremely heavy network activity it occasionally outputs a message about “excessive work at interrupt”, but this is not accompanied by any performance or reliability problems. I’ve read the source and the exact point of this complaint isn’t clear, since it doesn’t result in any alteration in its behavior and can in fact be changed at boot or module load time. I’m running Debian Testing (Lenny). For measuring the network speed, I connected the computer up to a netgear gigabit switch (GS108) and connected my macbook up to the same switch. A bit disappointing, but then again there is a lot of moving parts in the test I performed so your mileage might vary. Again, I did not do any tuning of the network stack. Perhaps lenny doesn’t have support for C7 cpu. ACPI: IRQ2 used by override. ACPI: IRQ9 used by override. Enabling APIC mode: Flat.
