Thanks. The 5D offered advanced photographers and photographers who take occasional paid work an offering that provided full frame image quality in an affordable package. The camera makes a number of compromises, even for the time it was released, with frame rate, buffer size, and build quality. However, today, as a used camera, it provides a very affordable way to learn photography with a straightforward interface and an absences of the frills and features that clutter Canon lower-tier cameras like the Rebel and Kiss cameras. My Patreon Page: Follow me on Twitter: Gear I used for Filming and Editing: Sony A7S II, Yashica 45mm lens, and a lapel mic. My Photography Website:The 5D offered advanced photographers and photograp. The short answer is that yes, there are many lens mounts that can be easily adapted to EF-mount (usually termed EOS mount). It's usually advised to stay away from mounts that require an extra optic to achieve infinity focus, like FD mount, but some people use them.Eddie at Lens Doctor told me he gets several cameras a year with broken mirrors because the owner has used a cheap lens adapter. The first time they press the shutter the mirror shatters on the back of the lens. I didn't want to take the risk with anything cheap. Mine should be with me in a couple of days and cost about ?50.Most notably the bayonet on most k-mounts gets in the way. It can be removed; it's there to provide stop-down metering on a k-mount body. I'm using them with tubes for macro work anyway so it's not an issue. K-mount isn't really ideal because prices are a bit high due to Pentax digitals still being compatible. M42 is usually a good place to start due to adaptors being inexpensive and lenses being ubiquitous. A little research is needed to figure out what will and won't hit the mirror, though.Done a few test shots and it's working well. It is focussing at infinity, though the outside edges of the frame are softer than they used to be when it was used without an adapter on my 35mm film camera. This effect might be nice for weddings. I've only tested it on the 7D, will test later on the 5D. I was a keen user of manual lenses on adapters but g. I'm a manual lens virgin, but I picked up a few the other day.. I'm Jerome Bonto. I'm one of those strange souls who still use. Hence the metering with my current camera is very inconsistent with manual lenses. I plan to get 5D Mark III or 6D in the near future and wondering if these newer Canon cameras have build in programs where you can enter focal length and max aperture of a non CPU lens, so when you put it on again it will recognize it. Do 5D III and 6D meter properly with non CPU manual lens?On Canon EF you need a CPU of course and that won't change. Metering in Av mode is mostly fine. Some says it over or under exposes, which is true and depends on the lens only. I don't find my mkii inconsistent copared ot use with AF lenses, almost the same. There are some AF simulator chipset that allows setting the aperture and focal so your exif is Ok but they don't change your metering, only EF native mount does. Last thing: AF confirm chipset is not that necessary, you'll see that 1.2 dof is too small and it misses all the time, same for 1.4:)No EOS camera will come with programmable apertures as they are designed to work solely with EF (EF-S), MP-E, and TS-E lenses. That said metering should be relatively accurate in Av and M modes for all cameras, operating using the stop-down metering method. In other modes metering doesn't work. What your are reporting sounds like an incorrectly set up AF confirm chip on the adapter. Then when stopping down it get is of. The images become way to bright. I can imaging that could be solved by programming the f stops. Though as i do not have such an adapter i do not know for sure.Samyang lenses don't have any contact with bodies, same as any MF lesn with an adapter.Schizoo from Paris: I'm not 100 on this, but when testing my 1Ds mkII it seems to give me some function in matrix metering. Each of the different metering modes (spot, CW, evaluative, and average) gave differing readings, behaving as expected. Maybe matrix loses accuracy when stopped down? The 1Ds mkII has Spot, Partial, CW and evaluative modes. The same thing, just different manufacturers call it different names. 5D mkI should also have spot, partial and CW metering modes. Personally, I don't get this multizone metering business, I never use it because it's seems stupid as essentially the computer has to guess what you want with the exposure. Personally I use something similar to Ansel Adams' zone system which is essentially the same thing done manually.Sry this is bit incomplete. There is EXIF, even ALL but lens info com info. Though i read from multiple sources the stop down over exposure is not lens related, and it does not occur when a -S screen is applied. Anybody can confirm or disconfirm this. I thought it did occur as the body cpu gets no reference about the changed aperture. So it performs the first read (wide open) and applies this to the stoped down metering with an overexposure as result. Obviously, if this is correct the phenomena does occurs more on fast lenses and lenses with a fast light transition? It involves taking multiple readings from different areas of a scene throughout the brightness range, in order to determine what range of details can be captured. In a situation where the dynamic range of a scene exceeds the dynamic range of the recording tool, it allows you to make an informed choice on what information to sacrifice. With experience, this becomes somewhat uneccesarily complex, especially on digital since you can often retake the shot. One can often read a scene and determine if and what detail has to be abandoned in a shot. It's not perfect but as mentioned earlier, experience teaches me when this will and won't work. Now, the S-type screen should not affect the metering, as cameras can be set to use an S-screen, through the custom function settings, and this is precalibrated to accomodate the darker screen. This does become problematic when you start installing screens into cameras which aren't meant to have non-standard screens installed, for example the 7D or the 1DX, or the Rebel Series.I mount the lens thru an adater (non-CPU) to the camera, use sutter priority to 350 because I was hand holding it, set ISO to auto, focus by moving the camera in and out then snap. Also a lot of older Canon's don't have auto ISO.Nice shot btw.I shot wide open, in AV. My disclaimer is that I'm new to all this MF on DSLR's thang, so maybe there's something I needed to do. Although there's conflicting info on this, the 5D3's evaluative metering actually meters off the AF point used (when in single point) so maybe its still important to move the AF point around even when MF'ing.I actually must say I don't understand why you use stop down metering. Is it simply so your viewfinder is as bright as possible to make MF easier?Once focus achieved and happy with the composition you close the aperture down using the ring to what you have set on the lens. With the camera in AV mode it will then set a speed to go with the aperture you manually selected on the lens. If you don’t manually stop down before taking the shot you are exposing at max aperture which will ruin your shots in the majority of cases. The process: Set the camera up to how you want to use it ISO speed, Focus Point. White Balance Set the camera in AV mode. The aperture settings on the camera play no part in this process and will show an aperture which the chip was set at in my case 1.4. ignore this setting. All the aperture adjustments will be made on the lens. Set an appropriate aperture manually on the lens Open the aperture control ring on your adapter. When open the viewfinder is bright when closed it will become darker. With the max amount of light coming through the lens focus and compose the picture Close the ring on the adapter, the picture will become dark and take the shot. You can also use this adapter in M mode but as a starting point use AV.I am just wondering if it's a little better with the 5D3?So pls correct me if I'm wrong. The reason I do this is that the viewfinder is dark at f8 and I can focus better with a bright viewfinder. However, the metering is occurring in this situation at f8 when the shutter is pressed, not f1.4 when I focused, so I'm confused:) Unless you use exposure lock every shot. Open the aperture control ring on your adapter. I only have a focus ring and aperture ring. If the aperture ring on the lens is the same as the control ring on the adapter, then I'm not sure why you need to set the appropriate aperture on the lens, and then set it straight after to widest aperture. If I want to shoot wide open, then I don't need to stop down naturally. Does the metering system adjust the shutter speed accordingly. If the answer is yes follow the instructions given. If no then somebody else needs to give advice.Canon FD-EOS which I use has the stop down facility built into the adapterDo you focus wide open simply to make the VF brighter (to make focussing easier) and just stop down to whatever fstop you want to meter and take the pic. Thanks for letting me know that you use evaluative for your MF lenses. I think its probably what I'll use most of the time too. It may not display this or other websites correctly. You should upgrade or use an alternative browser. How difficult is it to focus the Eos 5d mark 3 with (Zeiss) manual lenses while looking at the ground glass. Does it pop into focus or do you need the confirmation of the green dot in the viewfinder. I know I could use live view but that is not what I want. I have the 5d3 and the 24-70 L mark II. The lens is great but it is big. Thanks, FrankI can say though that in my view the Canon EF f1.4 35mm would be extremely hard to beat, plus it has AF. It's marginally more expensive the the Zeiss.I can say that viewfinders of manual focus film bodies are far superior to AF film bodies which are marginally better than digital bodies. Also full frame digital viewfinders are better than crop body viewfinders. There is nothing special about the 5D III or Zeiss lenses that make manual focusing any different. The experience will not be significantly different with f2 lenses over your f2.8 lens. Of course the super fast f1.2 and f1.4 lenses are much brighter and somewhat easier to focus with. Although I don't mind focusing in stopped-down mode at even f5.6 to f8. I guess what I am trying to say is that even if you tweak your camera with a different viewfinder screen or a slightly faster lens, manual focusing is still manually focusing. It is something that you have to learn to do well like eveything else, and even the little confirmation lights really don't mean that what you want in focus, is in focus, just like autofocus itself. When working from a tripod, liveview is phenomenal and is vastly superior to even film body viewfinders. If you don't achieve a reasonable level of expertise with manual focus on your current lenses there is no significant advantage to buying Zeiss lenses for this purpose alone.Of course it is much easier with medium format on a tripod. Just try your current lenses and see how it goes. At least you don't have to waste a ton of film like in the old days. All of these are shot in stopped-down mode and have readily available adapters. These are available in the aftermarket (cut-down screens for other models). The 5DIII screen isn't supposed to be user-swappable, but I understand you can still do it if you don't mind taking a screwdriver to your camera. A split prism finder would give you much greater accuracy of focus hand-held. If the Zeiss lenses have auto-aperture, then I suspect the electronic communication also results in enabling of focus confirm. Focus confirm isn't particularly accurate, but it's still useful. As John says, focus via 10x liveview is more accurate than anything else available to you, even when using a native Canon EF lens.I don't know whether there's a comparable screen for the 5DIII. As Sarah says, screens aren't user- interchangeable with that body, but if there were an MF-optimized screen available, a technician could install it for you.I have not made my mind up yet. The Canon 35L and 85L are also on my list so I might go for them. Autofocus is great with the 5d3.
