And even if your AF is currently still working, it may be interesting to you how to disassemble a Canon EF-S lens. This meant that at least the focus motor should still be intact. I suspected the lens to be faulty, because everything was working perfectly when it was switched to manual focus mode. Now it was clear that my EF-S 18-55mm lens had to be defect. Too cost-intensive. Everyone with some manual skills should be able to reproduce it since no soldering rework is necessary. Don’t work with the wrong tool, you won’t be happy. Carefully detach the flex cables (FPCs) from the white connectors. After that you can take off the controller board together with the top cover. This is not necessary and is not recommended. The whole gearbox unit is taken off as a single piece by removing the two silver screws. In the background there is the silver slider which has to be removed now (in the picture on the left, the slider is top right). It is maybe a bit hard to unbolt the two screws of the slider. Afterwards the glued FPC can be removed with help of needle-nose pliers when the lens is fully moved out (i.e. maximum zoom). I got hold of a Canon spare parts list. Every single part of the lens is descripted there in an exploded view. The part number is: You find one through your local Canon website.Just remove the protective foil and patiently place the FPC with tweezers. The lug of the slim part leading upwards is also glued on. Be careful for the tappets of the lens body to lock into the holes of the FPC (possibly it’s necessary to bend the FPC a bit). The reassembly is naturally done in reversed order: Mind the long plastic axis to be locked into the short gear collet because otherwise the focus won’t work at all. A toothpick maybe helpful doing this. The FPCs may be quite rough-running, they have to be inserted carefully and as far as possible. Insert the board into the lens body. Pay attention to the pictures and be careful not to break anything. In my case the autofocus worked again straightaway (don’t forget to set the slide switch back to AF if necessary). If nobody knows, well.It seems that the middle section is the one that changes the modes. When trying to take a better look at it, that middle section sunk further down.But another used 450D can probably be had for not much more than the cost of shipping the 450D both to and from the Service Center. Even if you are a master at repairing things such as smartphones and other very compact electronic devices, without a service manual that lays out the proper procedures in the correct sequences, it can only take one tiny mistake to irreparably damage something like a powerboard or a cable connector that could render your camera useless. Use the kind that hardens, not the kind that remains flexible after it has cured. Before it cures place the dial on top of it (with the slots on the underside of the dial lined up properly with the tabs on the switch) and press it on just enough to form the shape of the nub in the center of the dial onto the top of the putty. Use a very fine small file, perhaps a fingernail emery board, to insure the material you have added doesn't prevent the center shaft from rotating freely. Then use another drop or two, applied with a toothpick to the nub in the center of the dial, to glue the dial back onto the shaft you have extended. Let it cure for another day or so before testing it to be sure the dial will rotate properly. You'll have to be extremely careful about keeping moisture, rain, and sand out of the camera. But the Rebels aren't that weather resistant anyway, so that won't be a lot different than having the mode dial in place.I was worried this was going to be the only solution, and unless somebody else has a better answer it seems that it is:).
