ensoniq vfx-sd service manualDon't know what to do or where to go. Ask in here. It is NOT A SCHEMATIC. Ensoniq took them to their corporate grave. I have tried several times to talk Creative Labs into releasing them. Most times with frankly insulting 'talk-to-the-hand' results. It is NOT A SCHEMATIC. Most times with frankly insulting 'talk-to-the-hand' results. The story I read about this problem is that it plagued Ensoniq's engineers for a couple years almost. And it also affected more than one machine. They tried swapping out practically everything before they finally figured it out. Namely, there are three circuitboards under the keybed that are tied together. Over time, the keybed being pressed causes this area to flex where the circuitboards are. This flexing eventually causes the ribbon cable connecting two of those boards together to fail. This will usually be seen in keyboard calibration failing at boot. But other times, it will boot just fine and even work for awhile; but as you play, the flex causes it to crash or do other weird things. It's a very common problem on VFX-SDs (and a couple other models if memory serves). If you have this problem, the good news is that the fix is pretty simple (albeit somewhat cumbersome). You simply solder new wires in place (or even in addition to) the existing ribbon cable. That's it! Anyway, this information is hard to find despite being common. Here's a link to where you can view it. And it isn't really a ribbon cable, its a small PCB bridging two larger PCBs. So their is limited knowledge and docs out there. My 'spare' VFX has the fix done already. (I got a parts machine for nothing) The problem with using old-style troubleshooting on any of the Ensoniq digital synths is it is going to require a waveform monitor that does above 8 MHz, a logic probe, and a lot of digital synth knowledge. Also, Ensoniq used a lot of VLSI custom chips in their synths, which makes things very difficult.http://www.vannordenvastgoed.nl/userfiles/dish-vip722-installation-manual.xml

It was soon followed by the release of the VFX-SD, which included some updated waveforms (drum waves), a 24-track sequencer and a floppy drive. Both models were equipped with the Ensoniq Signal Processing (ESP) chip for 24-bit effects. The VFX-SD also included two AUX outs, which allowed for a total of 4 outputs from the synth for more routing flexibility. Some of these were:The Transwaves gave the VFX a unique sound as the only other instruments (at the time) using wavetable synthesis were the PPG Wave machines. Transwaves are also the only way to get the typical resonance sound since the filters of the VFX did not have a resonance parameter. The waveforms in the original VFX and early VFX-SD synths are 16-bit resolution with a sample frequency of approximately 39 kHz. They covered the standard list of piano, bass, guitar, string and solo varieties, as well as many others, all to Ensoniq's high quality. The VFX can be very deep and atmospheric by combining the waveforms themselves; however, a single sound can contain up to 6 oscillators at a time, providing for some complex layered and detuned sounds. The voice structuring, comprehensive matrix modulation, controller keyboard settings and performance capabilities are pretty advanced and versatile for a synthesizer of this vintage. These two buttons were used to select four different oscillator combinations of a sound. The mapping was fully programmable and was invaluable for creating more versatile sounds for performance.Mono A allowed for the same sound to be played across the MIDI channels and Mono B allowed for each MIDI channel to have a different sound.Because of the large fluorescent display, a lot of information and parameters are available at any one time, making the sequencer very intuitive to work with. The sequencer also allows for external MIDI input recording from other instruments. This can be done either one track (MIDI channel) at a time or in multi mode with several tracks (MIDI channels) being recorded at once. This makes it easy to also record multi channel sequences from other MIDI-instruments in to the VFX-SD. Tempo changes for each pattern could be programmed in to the patterns themselves or in song mode, to speed up or slow down the tempo at certain points. The user could also change the effects on a 'per-pattern' basis, allowing for more dramatic changes in the song, although that would make the output mute for a moment, if a different effect were selected. By also using external sound devices (or other MIDI gear), very complex arrangements are possible, triggering many different types of MIDI devices. Some users would use the sequencer live, and use some of the extra tracks to change programs on other MIDI enabled devices (light controllers, guitar processors, vocal FX processors etc.). This sequencer can be found in later Ensoniq models -- the VFX-SD (I) and VFX-SD (II), the SD-1, TS series and the SQ series.Very(!) versatile indeed. The format was proprietary to Ensoniq, but shared by the VFX, the EPS sampler and all later models, although cross-loading amongst different models was limited. Since it was not MS-DOS compatible, a niche industry sprang up to service the needs of musicians.Because of the Poly-Key pressure and keybed design (which was in three pieces), it was prone to bending and breaking at the solder points, causing the keyboard not to calibrate when turned on. Another problem with the synth was its ability to get very warm and cause heat-related issues. The heat sink itself would get hot to the touch and cause other problems with heating up the internals of the board, causing 'meltdown' issues (although this mostly happened on US-models). These problems were corrected in future versions and other models within the company, and can easily be solved on existing models as well.By using this site, you agree to the Terms of Use and Privacy Policy. Learn more I recently dragged it out of mothballs, it was working perfectly. I ordered some new EEPROMS from the USA to upgrade the Sequencer from 25000 notes to 75000 notes, however after fitting the new chips, the keyboard now flashes zeros once on the display then the Floppy Drive Light stays on for around 20 seconds and goes out, then nothing else happens. On advice, I replaced the battery, soldering it to the motherboard as the old one was, I was told this was the problem, however, it still does the same thing. I put the old chips back in, but it has made no difference. Please can anybody help. Sincerely AlanI would suggest checking for losses or poorly seated connectors.I switched on my EPS recently after a long period of hibernation, and it wouldn't boot. Reseating the connectors did the trick. The display board goes into a self-test mode when it's not communicating with the CPU, so that's why you get the characters on the display. And it's not that the connectors are loose or disconnected; the contacts become oxidized. You can work them back and forth a few times to scrape through the oxidation and establish a better connection. I think this isn't so much a problem for the ribbon cables, chip sockets or power supply connectors; it's mainly the board to board connections with the multicolored wire (or at least that's the case in my EPS).I got a donor VFX SD within a couple of months of my first post and put the board into my case and Joy and Rapture, its 1989 all over again. Also found a seller in Italy on Fleabay who had brand new old stock VFX SD Mainboards, I bought 2, one for back up and one to put in the donor machine, but that has a (Guess) NON WORKING KEYBED. But I have noticed the solder joints joining the 2 key coils are different, (More solder joints than on mine - 2 rows on each keycoil bed), will count them, I believe it is the one where if you had a keyboard calibration error it had to go back to Ensoniq to have the coil boards replaced, apparently it cannot be soldered the same way as they single row solder joint version. So, I am going to pull it apart and see if reflowing the solder will work and if it does, will then resolder. I did run a multimeter test and did not get any sound from about 7 pairs of solder contacts. It is 11 pm now, so will sign off now and let you know how I get on soonest. Good Night all. Ive done everything I can at this point, no luck. I thought that E-MU had intentions of keeping the brand alive, to release Ensoniq products in the future, but I've only seen them change Paris from the Ensoniq brand name to E-MU. Any thoughts? Would you resurrect Ensoniq. What kinds of products would they release. Or would you rather say RIP? I never played one 'out of the box', but the ones I did play, the keyboard, button, sliders had a worn out, loose feeling to them. Bitch as much as you want about the mirage, I think they really broke some ground with it, and deserve credit. Who else dreamed of making a sampler where you could load samples while playing already loaded samples, where you could record two tracks of linear audio digitally along side a sequence, or with an operating system that was so damn EASY. I wonder what E-MU has done with their purchase (Besides renaming and updating PARIS)? I felt the VFX audio engine was noisy, the on board effects were grainy and the ROM waveforms were poor. I sold it and vowed never to buy another Ensoniq device. To be fair I heard that their subsequent equipment was sonically much improved. Pity to hear that Ensoniq is no more. Tis was after the ESQ 1 was out of production. I've never had another manufacturer tell me this and if I cant buy the documentation to a keyboard, I wont buy the keyboard. I don't mind signing non-disclosure agreements. Some of us engineer type geeks don't feel like having our keyboards sit in a shop for 2-4 weeks waiting in line (unless you pay the 25-50 bucks to move ahead in the line) at the service repair shop. When I bought my Z1 mail order it came with a broken key return.Warrantee? Computer manufacturers have no problem when people get inside their box.I've been inside many of my keyboards while under warrantee and never had a problem. I had my Wavestation in for repair where the guy could not figure out why the vector controller was locking up. He gave up and I finally found the sequence of steps needed to repeat the problem and convinced ORG it was a software bug.(they fixed it). The Memorymoog was another one where Moog had me troubleshoot on the phone with them after numerous attempts at the shop failed to fix the tuning problem. Those guys were great. Still got it and it works great. Yamaha went from selling parts to not selling parts back to selling parts as I recall. Last time I dealt with their service dept they were very cool. Roland has been very good too with their service manuals and parts. I know I'm well into another topic here. Now. who were you asking about again? Isn't the ZR76 still available. And if they ARE gone, remember, Ensoniq (like Emu) is owned by Creative Labs, so the decision comes from corporate, not Emu per se. I believe E-mu was purchased first and then Ensoniq. I don?t know if Creative is phasing out the Ensoniq brand name, but I don?t believe there is such a thing as a separate E-mu or a separate Ensoniq anymore. As far as old Ensoniq gear goes, I owned both a Mirage and a VFX-SD. I loved their sound and hated their lack of reliabilty. Craig Anderton's Archiving Article I wouldn't give my ZR-76 up for anything (I can't live without my nifty favorites, ideapad, and easy to use sequencer).I've had no problem (yet) getting tech support when I needed it (and the manual Rocks).Oh and it is Very heavy and doesn't fit into standard cases (had to get a custom one from SKB). Anyhow. phew thats my comments on Ensoniq hehe.Enjoy your time here. Regards, Geoff Craig Anderton's Archiving Article J?rn (very found of his ensoniq) Then (in 1995) I got enough money for buying my own instrument and having completely fell under a spell of Ensoniq sounds (sorry for my English) I did choose.TS-10 looks very much like SD-1 but has a lot of improvements over its predecessor (don't worry, I wouldn't bother you with the details). As you see, I a kind of grow up on Ensoniq instruments and their sounds. It's only recently I updated to a PC and started to sequence via midi interface (not in the inner sequencers of SD-1 and TS-10 as I've done all this time). So despite the fact that my next synth might be some software's one. I REALLY MISS Ensoniq. I REALLY MISS Ensoniq. Vladislav The company is a wholly owned subsidiary of Creative Technology Ltd.Creative definitely had an advantage to aquiring Ensoniq, as they were competing in the soundcard market with wavetable soundcards. So Creative increases their market share in that area, and so on. I also haven't seen any of Ensoniq's technology utilized in any new E-MU branded new gear releases.I maintain that a good name will help a product, and a bad name will hurt it. dB I am glad I bought a CS1X instead. A burgeler stole it from my house along with my Motion-Sound Pro3T about a year ago. I ended up getting a Kurzweil PC2 and a Boss BR-8 with the insurance money though, so I guess I ended up better even though the Pro3T rocked.
