PenroseTribar 5.0 out of 5 stars The Zinwell and a small leaf antenna brought it back to life and pulled in about 20 OTA channels clear as a bell. Super easy set up and UI remote.Overall, I give it high ratings, except for a couple issues. The antenna in port is the screw-in kind-coaxial cable. The power cord was a little short for my use so I had to use an extension. Remote: Some complain about the remote feeling cheap or wimpy. This is because a lot of people are used to their large feature-packed digital cable or satellite remotes. The two AA batteries weigh as much as the remote does. It has stood the test or a few months with me. All buttons work like they should and it has survived a few drops too. It works at most angles by pointing it generally the direction of the box.http://fscl.ru/content/boss-observation-manual Set up: When it is first turned on, it goes directly to set-up mode. Select the time zone you are in, and select scan. Below the progress bar will list the channels received so far. The manual scan mode is good if you have a directional antenna. Turn your antenna, select the channel and save. The default way the channels are listed is by the analog number they once were. You can have them listed alphabetically or in any order you like. Next I wanted to edit channels. Navigating through the menu is fairly easy, and backing up a screen is easy-push the exit button. You can skip the channels you don’t want to see, or block them all together. There is a favorite channels list as well. It lets you do up to 8 lists. You may also delete channels from the memory. Renaming the channel is also an option. Next is the aspect ratio, audio mode and language. Set these according to your situation. This has very specific parental controls accessible with a password. You can change the 4-digdit number to one of your choosing. There are the U.S. TV ratings and MPAA for movies. Use: Once all that is in place it all gets really easy to use. Switching channels quickly is one of my favorite features. As long as you are getting a good signal from your antenna, it will tune in within a second or two. After turning the channel, the program name appears in a box at the bottom of the screen with the start and end time, and what is on next and its start and end time. The channel number, call letters, time, and signal strength and quality appear too. You can set how transparent or opaque you want the on-screen display to be. I control my volume through my box. I set my TV’s volume and don’t touch it. I run the audio through the RCA cables and it gives loud, clear sound with no hissing or buzzing. This box did get in one or two more channels than my last box. The picture quality is excellent. I use the Mohu leaf. (See my review) The picture quality with the RCA cables is comparable to satellite.http://finrusinvest-global.com/images/commander-phone-manual.pdf A couple issues I encountered are the zoom or aspect ratio of the unit. I have to change it usually between the networks and the PBS channels. No problem- except sometimes the picture does not change. A little box appears in the corner indicating the ratio has changed, but the edges of the picture still get cut off. This happens occasionally. Another issue I encountered was the program label. I had my box plugged into a timer for the power. I didn’t want it on standby all night. So when I turned it to my ABC affiliate (7.1) it would not say the program name or what was on next. When I turned it to 7.2, it would tell me what was on 7.1. Only that channel. I reset it to the factory settings a couple of times, but it kept doing it. I ended up plugging it into a continuous power source. No problems since. It’s a great unit. Very easy to use with a lot of features. Very quick and nimble. The menus are easy to navigate. It powers on in less than five seconds and works flawlessly for me.It will drive you insane. It takes the amplified antenna signal I plug into the back of the unit as per the instructions and free television shows up on my television. That having been said, and I am sorry to say it, the guide is a horror. Also, every time you scan for channels it starts from scratch and deletes your list, rather than adding new ones to a list you have achieved. I liked it for the first few days, despite these issues, as I am so tired of dealing with cable. This little box is bare bones, for someone who wants to turn it on and flip and flop and flip some more, all the way through their available channels to find something to watch. It is not for someone who wants to plan ahead, have any idea what the title of the movie they are watching happens to be, have the ability to select what channels to view in the guide (so they don't have to scroll through all the Vietnamese channels when they are Korean or the Korean channels when they are Hispanic or the Hispanic channels when they are Icelandic, or whatever the case happens to be. On my TiVo, that just arrived, I already have two weeks of listings. I have all the details I could want. I have a favorites option in my guide so I can just scroll the channels I will watch (the ones in English that don't involve anyone trying to sell my anything, except for that real estate toad at two in the morning I just can't seem to escape). I have a more sophisticated antenna signal meter that averages the strength and quality together and color codes so I'll know if I am meeting the minimum needed to view a channel. On this little Zinwell, the antenna meter is a simple percentage scale for signal strength followed by one for quality and they don't always agree with what the picture is actually doing. For example, PBS channel 28 is at 98 strength and 100 quality and is fuzzing in and out and pixelating. On the TiVo, it is around 70 and well into the green zone and is picture perfect, every second of every hour I watch it. If you can afford it, get the TiVo and hope they pull their heads out their you know whats and start supporting Amazon Prime. If you can't, keep looking. This is not the unit for you unless you really aren't going to EVER check the guide for title information that won't be there. After three days with this thing, according to my family, I started to go insane. I'm just saying.I get 27 channels and sub-channels off-the-air in the south Etobicoke (Toronto) area. I use a Terk HDTVa amplified indoor antenna. The amplified antenna noticeably helps reception with this unit. Each channel can show signal strength and quality. This helps aiming the antenna for the first time. The analog pass-through feature works when I power off the converter box. The analog signals are poor in my area, so I will not be using this feature. The quality of the new HD channels is superb. I can now say goodbye to my cable carrier. It arrived 2 business days after the order was placed. I opted for standard delivery but it was expedited anyway. I miss CBCNN, CTVNN, CP24 and the Weather Network. The picture was great even on my old CRT TV. I was happy so I bought another one for a TV in another room. I split the signal from the one antenna and hoped that it works. It did! and there was no noticeable degradation. They removed this function of this model without changing it's name. So disregard all other reviews saying it does. As for a stand alone digital to analog converter, it's more expensive than average but does the work. However, it produces alot of heat for such a simple machine. I do not recommend it.It does exactly as advertised and is so easy to setup. We now get 8? channels whereas before we received one. Two of the channels here in Elgin County Ontario we now get are perfect for our three year old also. We are very happy. TV is now what it should be in our household. I will recommend this to others, and would buy another if needed. The few extra dollars for this one are definitely worth it. The subsidy program was enacted to provide over-the-air television viewers with an affordable way to continue receiving free digital over-the-air television services after the nation's television service transitioned to digital transmission and analog transmissions ceased. The specification was developed by the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), with input from the broadcast and consumer electronics industries as well as public interest groups. Each home would receive a rebate coupon for one box, which could be mailed to the United States Treasury for redemption. It directed the FCC to deposit the receipts from the spectrum auction of the returned analog television frequencies into the fund. The plan prohibited people with cable or satellite service from requesting coupons. In order to get two coupons, consumers had to state that they had two television sets. In an effort to limit misconduct, coupon requests would be only be taken between January 1, 2008 and March 31, 2009; each coupon would be valid for three months. The Commerce Department had no plans to make coupons available only to the poor.LG Electronics, Thomson, Samsung, and Jasco were the first companies to announce plans to make the devices. After June 1, 2007, retailers could apply to sell converter boxes. The box must output signals both as a radio frequency output (compatible with a television's antenna input), as well as composite video and stereo audio outputs. It must include a remote control, and be compatible with universal remotes. The video outputs had to produce video at an ITU-R BT.500-11 quality scale of Grade 4 or higher. Various technical performance parameters for the digital tuner were also specified. They must decode the Program and System Information Protocol (PSIP) data from the digital transmission, and use it to provide the user with tuned channel and program information. They must provide an automatic power-down option that can put the unit in standby mode when it has not received any commands for a while. The FCC could also test converter boxes at the NTIA's request. Among the optional features permitted, but not required, were the following:The manufacturer could optionally provide a promotional package discount for the combination of a smart antenna and a CECB. Digital cable and satellite set-top boxes that incorporate a digital tuner were also disqualified. In order to watch one channel while recording another, one must have two such converter boxes, unless the recording device has its own digital TV tuner. Then, the converter's tuner will change to the appropriate channel at the time the VCR needs to record. This requires a separate box for the VCR, or the viewer will have to watch what is being recorded.Manufacturers responded by releasing a new generation of models with the feature. Some new DVD recorders and personal video recorders also provide both analog and digital tuners, and therefore could perform the basic functions of a set-top box in both modes. The CBA felt that the court wanted them to continue working with the FCC.Washington, DC: Technology Policy Institute. These codes can be used to control your TV with the Digital Stream converter box remote control or a Universal remote. You can control Television sets for all major brands after programming the converter box remote control or a universal remote with the remote codes below. How do I search for the programming codes using the remote that came with the Digital Stream converter box. NOTE: The TV power button will need to be pressed and held the complete time you are programming the remote. When the TV power button is released then programming ends. After 105 Up Arrow presses, the remote control has ran through the complete list of TV codes. To try again, use the same method, but press the Down Arrow to scan through the TV codes in the other direction. NOTE: If any of the TV buttons do not work keep searching for a remote code from step 1. Then replace the batteries. I got a new RCA universal remote and tried 52303, 00749, 00819, but not working. Also tried all the Toshiba codes (my TV is Toshiba), but not working. It has no button for digital converter box so I chose CBL. Works fine except for the number buttons. I can change the channel using the Up and Down channel button, but when I press any of the number keys I get nothing. I’m using a new RCA universal remote. I saw the bottom statement saying that if the remote still doesn’t work, it cannot be programmed to the box. Please help! Thank you! ??! I picked up an RCA 4 in 1 Palm Size Universal remote. But the codes that they give you for the digital box will not work the digital box. Is there a universal remote on the market that will work a Coby Digital Converter Box. I bought a GE universal remote that takes 4 numbers and a RCA universal 5 number remote I tried the numbers posted here but no luck. Have any ideas? Notify me of new posts by email.
