Cautions E LECTROS TATIC D ISCHARGE Electrostatic discharge (ESD) can dam age boards, disk drives and other compo nents. T he circui t board must only be handled at an ESD workstation. If an approved station is not availabl e, some measure of protection can be provided by wearing a g ro unded antistatic wrist st rap. K eep all plastic away from the board, and do not sl ide the board over any surface. After removing the board from its protective wrapper, place the board on a grounded, static - free surface, component side up. U se an antistatic foam pad if available. The board should also be protected inside a closed m etall ic anti -static envelope during shipment or storage. Not e: The exterior coating on some metallic antistatic bags is sufficiently conductive to cause ex cessive battery drain if the bag comes in contact w ith the bottom - side of the EBX - 38. L ITHIUM B ATTERY To prevent shorti ng, prem atur e failure or damag e to t he lithium battery, do not place the board on a conductive surface such as m etal, black conductive foam or the outside surface of a metalized ESD protective pouch. If the power supply you are using does not provide SATA conn ectors, adapters are available. Fig ure 11. Location of the SATA Port s 4 The VL- F41 series of microSD cards provide solid- state storage of 2 GB, 4 G B, or 8 GB. The m icroSD socket accom modates cards with up to 64 GB of storage capacity. No drivers are needed, as the device interface is abstracted as a standard parallel IDE d ri ve on the m aster IDE channel. Figure 12. Location of the microSD S ocket The fi gure below shows the locati on of the USB ports on the baseboar d. This interface can operate usi ng ei ther the Atom processor’s EHCI controller or its x HC I controller. To use the USB 3.0 Super Speed mode, the xHCI cont roller must be used. USB controller selection is set in the BIOS. B y default, EHCI is used. Som e older operating sy stems ( such as MS - DOS) may not s upport xHCI. Figure 13. Location of the USB Ports 5 The PCIe Mini Card interface includes one PCIe x1 lane, one hubbed USB 2.0 channel, and the SMBus interface. The socket is compatible with plug-in Wi- Fi m odems, G PS receivers, Flash data storage, and other cards for added fl exibility. These screws are available in quantities of 10 in the VL - HDW -108 hardware kit from VersaLogic. On the Viper, this signal is available for use for mSAT A versus PCIe Mini C ard detection. There is an option in BIOS setup for setting the mS ATA detection method. A fourth LED is used t o indicate when the Mini Card i s powered (since the Mini Card power can be configured to either be always- on or on in S0). This i ndicator is very important as a warning to NOT hot-plug the Mini Card ( otherwise it might appear it is OK when the boar d is in a sleep mode but the Mini Card is stil l powered); as a result, it is intentiona lly yello w to indicate “cau ti on”. Integrator’s Note: The 3.3 V pow er to the Mini Car d can be controlled by the FPGA. By default, t he power is always on, but there is a register setting that turns this pow er off in sleep modes.
