Mildew can grow anywhere we have a warm surface that comes in contact with a cold surface. This means uninsulated ductwork, or aged ductwork. The unit itself can also produce some mildew due to lack of maintenance. And also, water can get inside the duct for many reasons if you have cooling. Temporary fix is what we call in Texas a Odor Cake. These are sold at the HVAC parts houses. Come in a little Tupperware style cup, and are mainly used for fire, smoke, and mildew damage to a structure. You just set em inside the airflow and the help, but don't solve the issue.
