Safety is a key component to a long lasting and trouble free installation. There is a risk of electric shock to your body and permanent damage to the equipment. Electric shock may result in permanent bodily injury or death. The Emotiva UPA-2 Amplifier should not be situated on a bed, sofa, rug, or similar surface that may block any ventilation openings; or placed in a built-in installation such as a bookcase, cabinet, or closed equipment rack that may impede the flow of air through ventilation openings. If installed in a closed equipment rack for custom installations, be sure to add forced air ventilation so that it has adequate air circulation. The Emotiva UPA-2 Amplifier should be situated away from heat sources such as radiators, or any other devices which produce heat. Power supply cords should be routed so that they are not in high foot traffic areas or pinched by items placed upon or against them, paying particular attention to cords at the wall plugs, convenience receptacles, and the point where they connect into the UPA-2 Amplifier. The power cord of the UPA-2 Amplifier should be unplugged from the outlet when unused for a long period of time. When it’s time for cleaning the Emotiva UPA-2 Amplifier, it should be cleaned only as recommended in this User’s Guide. Never spray liquids directly into the component’s vent openings. Care should be taken so that small objects do not fall into the inside of the UPA-2 Amplifier. See diagram below. After reading tons of good reviews about Emotiva, I figured at this price point and the 30 day money back guarantee (you only have to pay for shipping) what have I got to lose. When the amp arrived, I was excited to see what it could do. I figured, I'm only going from 95w to 125w, there won't be much of a difference. Boy was I wrong. I immediately noticed more detail in music and bass that I did not know my speakers were capable of. When I turned the bass up a little, the room was actually shaking. This is something my speakers were not normally capable of, the 30w made a big difference. When I connected the speakers back to the receiver, I noticed that the sound was so.dull and lifeless compared to what it sounded like with the amp. It was almost like night and day. One thing that I found is that I had to take quite some time to re-adjust the center and surrounds to match the new-found oomph of the higher powered fronts. Plus it left me wanting more.imagine what it will sound like when I get myself a multi-channel amp. It's great to see more non-headphone related discussions on this subreddit.http://cydistribution.com/images/99-mazda-millenia-repair-manual.pdf What do you think about any background static at higher volume levels (turn up volume with no sound playing to hear any buzz). What sound card are you using. Background static can be heard starting at -12dB when I have my ear less than an inch away from the tweeter. At my listening position, I barely hear it even at 0dB. I wouldn't even call it a buzz so much as a very light hiss. I've always wondered about those Emotivas, everyone raves about them. It's important to note that while the extra 30w might be a significant factor, it's most likely other amplifier characteristics which caused the increase in fidelity. As an anecdote, I now run a 70w stereo amplifier (using the same-ish Yamaha RX-V659 as a preamp) and the dynamics and bass response are still better than the receiver, even though the WPC is significantly less (only 35!). It's all about how the amplifier delivers the power, not necessarily how much it has. Also, as I said, I have a very similar Yamaha receiver to yours, and I have to say that even though it has plenty of power (and even exceeds its specified power ratings) it does sound very cold and clinical, and doesn't have the best imaging characteristics. It does very well for movies and surround though, where I much prefer the accurate and real presentation of its amplifiers, and I wouldn't be surprised if you're getting the best of all worlds powering the 2 front channels with the Emotiva and the rest with the Yamaha. Nice choice! Also, if you have the Yamaha self-configuring (YPAO I think it's called) microphone, it helps a lot with the volume and levels configuration of all the channels, especially when the fronts now have completely different power than the other channels. I did that reconfig after I switched out the power amp, and it was an instant improvement. Does a pretty good job. I do have YPAO on my system, however with dipole surrounds, it always gives me an error that the wiring is out of phase even though it is wired correctly as well as the speaker levels it sets automatically don't give as high of a level as I would like in the surrounds so I prefer to tweak those settings manually after running the YPAO. And yes I am getting the best of both worlds by letting the receiver power my center and surrounds. It's like lifting a huge off their shoulders without having to power the fronts. Surprised that the X-Overs in the speakers are still good. Pay's to invest in quality. Thanks for the compliment. I've actually had some changes since that post. I had forgotten that there are two fuses to check. It's been back in the rack for a month and running fine. It is powering two Emotiva ERD-1s for side surround. The Emotiva UPA-2 is driving two other ERD-1s for rear surround. The Energy Pros are now looking for new owners. The NHT sup is retired having been replaced by a Rythmik F12.When the speakers are also highly efficient, as is the case here, the results can be messy. (While not quite as responsive as the Klipsch classic speakers, reading through Magnepan reviews shows that this issue is a live one.) I find the UPA-2 does a wonderful job in presenting a faithful rendering of the timbres of all instruments as well as clearly presenting bass notes and a fine precision that helps following multiple musical threads, such as found in the Brandenburg Concerti recordings from Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert. The human voice is also beautifully rendered: “Glitter and Be Gay” from the orginal cast album of “Candide” shows just how accurate the young Barbara Cook was in this notoriously difficult piece. At the same time, Robert Preston's performance of “When Movies Were Movies” from “Mack and Mabel” shines through the technically challenging recording. I find that I have stopped listening to the equipment and have resumed listening to the music - my most important criterion for a piece of audio gear.Audioholics.com is NOT affiliated with Audiogurus.com. Page 8 Unpacking the UPA-2 The Emotiva UPA-2 Amplifier should reach you in flawless condition. If you notice any shipping damage or other issues upon unpacking the unit, please contact your Emotiva Retailer immediately. Inventory Included with your UPA-2 amplifier should be an IEC Class 1, 2 prong power cord, and this User’s Guide. Please take a moment to make sure all the items are there in the packaging. Gently lift out the unit and remove all the packing material and accessories. Loop outputs and inputs are paralleled. Level Control When set to Minimum, the amplifier has no output;when set to Maximum, it has 32dB of gain and will match the gain structure of all the other Emotive Amplifiers.(Note:Loop out is not controlled by it. Page 11 Installation and Connections AC Power Considerations Ensure that the unit is plugged into an outlet capable of supplying the correct voltage and current specified for your model. Remember to account for the electrical power that other components will require if they share a common wall socket or electrical circuit. The majority of household electrical sockets in places other than the kitchen and garage are 15 amperes maximum. Most DVD players and other source components are fairly low current items. Page 12 Input Connection Considerations Whenever possible, keep preamplifier level audio cables away from electrical power cords by at least a few inches. It’s more important with amplifiers as the AC power cords are carrying much more current than other source and preamplifier components, which means there is a larger degree of noise or “hum” potential with the amplifier power cord in close proximity. UPA-2 could also be used to turn on another amplifier, when it is on. This trigger will actually trigger with any switched DC Voltage from 5-12 VDC (The trigger output voltage is 12VDC 500mA MAX); however, the majority of home theater components use a standard 12 VDC trigger connection for this function. This is the preferred connection as it has the greatest degree of reliability. Page 16 Series and Parallel Speaker Connections Whenever connecting more than one speaker per channel to an amplifier (regardless of the brand), you must consider the way in which the amplifier will be impacted by adding the additional speaker(s). Additionally, speakers with dual voice coils also apply to this consideration. Two voice coils in a single speaker also cause different reactions from an amplifier depending on the way in which they connect to the amplifier. The total impedance of equal speakers in parallel is found by dividing the impedance of one speaker by the number of speakers. For example, two eight ohm speakers in parallel is a four ohm load (eight ohms divided by two), four eight ohm speakers in parallel is a two ohm load (eight ohms divided by four). Page 18 Troubleshooting Guide The Emotiva UPA-2 is expertly designed and built to provide years of trouble-free performance. Most problems that occur can usually be solved by checking your setup or making sure that the audio and video components connected to the amplifier are on and fully operational. The following information will help you deal with common setup problems you may experience during normal use of your unit. If problems persist, contact Emotiva for help. If one speaker is wired incorrectly, than it will be “out of phase” with the others, resulting in poor bass performance. If you need assistance, contact Emotiva. Although this is not always an ideal solution, the grounding differences between certain home entertainment components sometimes require ground loop isolators. This is the exception rather than the rule. Other Probable Causes of Noise Speaker noise may also be caused by interference or noise on your AC line. As a result of this quality and craftsmanship, Emotiva offers the following warranty to owners of the UPA-2. Emotiva Audio warrants the UPA-2 to be free from defects in materials and workmanship for a period of ?ve years from the original date of purchase. The following items are excluded from, or will void this warranty coverage: 1) Damage to the UPA-2 caused during shipment and handling. Photos:It has been an integral part of my system until recently and provides a serious upgrade for the money. Highly recommended. Also included is a bound set of printed instructions. I now use Roon convolution instead which reduced the box count. These are easily available but happy to talk about it.However, technically and sonically this is the best and most advanced amplifier that we've ever build. Of course this amplifier also uses the concept of active balanced headphone ground. Within this concept each headphone connection wire carries an additional signal such that the sum of the potentials of the wires equals zero. This strongly minimizes the energies stored and released in the electrical fields inside the headphone cable when an audio-signal is applied. The influence of the wire on the sound is thus reduced. Moreover, with active ground pollution of the internal signal ground by strong driving currents is eliminated and the power-supply-rejection-ratio at the output stages is strongly improved. Thus the best conditions are given for a clean and undistorted sound. Active balanced headphone ground offers most of the advantages of a true balanced headphone setup without the need of balanced connections. It can be used with any conventional dynamic or magneplanar headphone. The volume control is technically very sophisticated. The position of the potentiometer is measured with the use of an AD-converter. The output of this converter is then used to switch a bank of relais to set the proper volume level. There are a total of 64 levels which allows for very small stepsizes and a very analog feeling. The advantages of this concept are strongly reduced channel-imbalances and a much cleaner and more detailed sound. The use of a conventional stereo-potentiometer does add its own sonic signature which is now prevented. The amplification section is build around AD797 opamps biased into class-A. For the output stages BUF634 buffer amplifiers are used. These integrated circuits are very fast and thus allows the output signals to follow the input signals very closely. The amp is DC-coupled and any capacitors found in the signal path are of the highest quality polypropylen and polystyrol. A very extensive powersupply, a large number of power-regulators, and a total filter capacity of 80.000 microF (!!) assure the best working conditions for any part of the circuitry. The built-in crossfeed filter is a frequency-extended version of the natural crossfeed found in previous CORDA amplifiers and provides even better imaging. It also offers three intensity levels (Stereo, medium, high). To compensate for the psycho-acoustic bass-loss a separate switch allows to slightly increase lower-frequencies. Technically the CLASSIC is an extremely advanced headphone amplifier and offers excellent value-for-money!Our publication is supported by its audience. Outlaw Audio 7125 13 Mar 2013 March 13, 2013 7:36 AM PDT when I checked out the Outlaw Audio 975 surround processor and 7125 power amp and The Outlaws handily trumped the receiver. Maybe that's why high-current amps like the UPA-500 sound better I listened to the Denon AVR-1912 and Emotiva surround processor I suddenly tumbled on Emotiva Basx-A700. I read pretty good reviews on it as well. I have used the UPA-500 and very pleased with it. The sound is crisp, clean sounding and fills the room. On two-channel music, I can hear every instrument very distinctly. I often sit there and marvel at how fantastic my system sounds. Movies sound great too. But the difference is very noticeable with music. I'm 100 satisfied. The Emotiva comes with a 5-year warranty, same as the Monolith. But the Monolith weighs in at 93lbs, while the Emotiva weighs 53lbs--after setting it up, I couldn't imagine dealing with something nearly twice the weight. The Emotiva runs cool (though I've added a AC Infinity to help.but it's barely on). I love the look of the system with the blue indicator lights. It's really difficult to express what a difference this amp makes to my system. Get it and you'll be very happy!Reasearch and reviews swayed me towards Emotiva. Never has my system sound so rich and dynamic, the XPA-7 Gen 3 added character and a sense of true realism to my theater for movies and not just that, this amplifier is great for 2 channel music as well where it gets even more power. YOur system has enough headroom with this amp. When setting this amp, keep in mind that the phase maybe off, the XLR's polarity were off, simple fix of just following your processors recommendation of a simple wiring change. And now for the for the customer service - I have been emailing Emotiva asking an exact ETA from the time of order to the time I can receive my amplifier built and ready, I was promised in wiring and email a 5 to 7 day turnaround with an aditional 5 days for shipping to my state. With an order date of April 15th, I received my XPA-7 on the 8th of May. I was promised a reply through email and received nothing. This could have been a 5 star review but because of Emotiva dropping the ball and with no follow up. As you scroll through the inputs, the audio and video that has been assigned to that input can be seen on the right side of the OSD. To select an INPUT, scroll up or down through the list until the desired input is highlighted on the OSD, then press ENTER. MODE The MODE menu allows you to select a different output format for a given input signal. For example: you have a DTS signal coming in which is a 5.1 format. Your system is setup for 7.1 and you would like it to play in all 7 speakers. Within the mode menu you can select PLIIx format which will now play in all 7 speakers. So the input signal is 5.1 and the input format is DTS, but the output format can be selected to be Dolby PLIIx and output 7.1. The MODE menu allows you to change the output format on the fly. If you want to preset the UMC-1 to automatically 28 30 play in a specific format, this can be done in the ADVANCED PLAYBACK menu. Another option for changing the MODE is to press either the MODE up or MODE down buttons on the remote control. To access the MODE menu, simply scroll down the list until it s highlighted and press ENTER. Within the MODE menu, you can scroll to select any allowable mode for a given input type. The system will not allow you to select a mode that is not supported for a given input (even though you can see all of the modes in the menu). PARAMETER The PARAMETER menu allows you to set the individual levels for each speaker as well as bass, treble, Dolby Volume, Midnight Mode, Center Width, and Dimension. The levels in this menu are temporary settings. Permanent level adjustments can be done in the speaker setup menu. These level adjustments are the same as the ones shown on the UMC-1 remote. They are used to make On the fly adjustments for the movie or show you are watching and will revert back to the pre-set levels when the input is changed or the unit is turned off. Another option for changing the PARAMETERs On the fly is to press any of the CH TRIM buttons on the remote control.
