The wrench is designed to bend before any damage is done to the garbage disposal. It is a small square red button. (See Fig 1a) Lift the garbage disposal slightly and loosen the lower mounting ring by pushing or pulling the wrenchette or screwdriver to the left until the garbage disposal is free from the mounting assembly. (See Fig 1b) Loosen the green ground screw and remove wire connectors. Disconnect garbage disposal wires from electrical supply wires. Loosen screws on the electrical clamp connector and remove wires from the garbage disposal. Otherwise skip to step 12. Use a screwdriver or putty knife to carefully scrape all old putty from the edge of the sink hole. Drop the new sink flange into the drain opening and press it into place. Placing a weight, such as the garbage disposal, on top of the sink flange will help hold the sink flange in place while mounting the sink flange to the sink. To avoid scratching your sink or the flange, place a towel between the sink surface and the weight. (See Fig 4) From under the sink, slide the fiber gasket, backup flange and mounting flange over the sink flange. Hold these pieces in place. Lay the garbage disposal on its side and use a screwdriver and hammer to tap it out. Next, remove the loose knockout plug from inside the garbage disposal. Basic Garbage Disposal Care Is your garbage disposal jammed, clogged, leaking, or not draining. If your garbage disposal doesn’t work right, read on. This complete garbage disposal troubleshooting guide will help you quickly diagnose and repair the problem. If your garbage disposal doesn’t work: 1. Push the reset button on the bottom of the disposal and then try it again. 2. Make sure its cord is plugged into a working electrical outlet or hardwired to an electrical box. If the garbage disposal doesn’t do anything —meaning it doesn’t even hum—the problem is likely to be that it isn’t receiving power. This generally means that either: The garbage disposal’s overload circuit has shut it down, or The electrical circuit that serves the garbage disposal is off. To deal with this, see Garbage Disposal Not Working, No Noise, below. If the garbage disposal hums but doesn’t grind when you turn it on, turn it off. Something is jammed inside it. See Garbage Disposal Hums or Is Jammed, below. If the unit’s motor runs, but it doesn’t grind well, something is probably wrong with the blades. See Disposal Grinds Poorly, below. If the garbage disposal is not draining or disposal water comes back up through the sink drain, the problem is generally with the garbage disposal drain, not the disposal unit. For more, see Garbage Disposal Clogged, Not Draining. If the garbage disposal leaks into the base cabinet, you’ll need to determine where the leak is originating. First look for drips from the pipes (especially at connections) in the area under the sink. If leaks drip from the bottom of the garbage disposal’s body, see Garbage Disposal Leak, below. Back to top Garbage Disposal Not Working, No Noise If your garbage disposal doesn’t do anything—meaning it doesn’t hum or make a sound—it probably isn’t receiving power. Look for a garbage disposal reset button on the underside of the disposal and press this reset button as discussed above. This simple touch may be all that’s needed to get it running again. If that doesn’t do the trick, determine whether your disposal is plugged into an electrical receptacle under the sink or hard-wired (directly connected) to an electrical box there. If your disposal is the plug-in type, unplug the disposal from its electrical outlet and test the outlet with another appliance, such as a hair dryer. If the outlet doesn’t work with another device, go to the circuit breaker panel and reset the circuit breaker that serves the disposal. This breaker is often on the same circuit used by the dishwasher. Reset it by turning it all of the way off and then back on. If your disposal is hardwired to an electrical box, go straight to the circuit breaker panel and reset the breaker the same way. Back to top Garbage Disposal Hums or Is Jammed You’ll know your disposal is jammed or clogged when the motor hums but the disposal doesn’t grind, is overly noisy, or runs and then stops before you turn it off. Don’t continue to run the disposal when it’s jammed—this can burn out the motor. Even when jammed, a disposal will usually drain. The jam is often caused by a piece of bone, a fruit pit, or something similar stuck between an impeller blade and the drain hole. Be sure to unplug the disposal or turn off the electrical circuit that powers it before making any repairs. If the motor has burned out, you’ll need to replace the disposal. To clear a jammed disposal: 1 Unplug the unit or turn off the circuit breaker that serves it. 2 Under the sink, look at the bottom of the disposal for a hex-shaped hole. In-Sink-Erator Inexpensive garbage disposal wrench clears a jammed disposer. Buy on Amazon Fit the hex wrench into the hole, and force it back and forth a few times to free the impellers. (Note: Some models have a reversing switch that accomplishes the same action.) 3 If your disposal doesn’t have a hex hole or you can’t find a hex wrench, put a short broom stick into the disposal (with the with the power disconnected!), force it down against one of the blades, and try to rotate the impeller back and forth. Here is a video that shows how to unstick your disposal: 4 If something has been put in the disposal that shouldn’t have —such as metal, rubber, glass, or fibrous food waste such as artichoke leaves or banana peels—use tongs or pliers to pull the material out. Never use your hand. 5 You may have to remove the disposal to clear a jam. In some situations, this is easier to do than it might sound. Following is a really helpful video that shows the basic techniques for simple fixes and, if necessary, removing a disposal. Normally, it isn’t worth trying to repair a broken garbage disposal. Garbage Disposal Clogged, Not Draining When water stands in the sink, it means the drain is clogged either in the disposal or further down the drain line. This isn’t a garbage disposal problem—it’s a plumbing problem. You’ll probably need to dismantle the drain pipe under the sink and clear the clog. If the disposal is leaking from where it goes through the sink, replace the drain gasket or the unit’s mounting screws. For more about this, see How to Install a Garbage Disposal. If the unit is unreasonably noisy, check whether something has entered the unit that shouldn’t have. If all is clear, the motor, impeller, or shredder is probably shot. The good news is that you can handle most repairs yourself. If you want to hire a plumber or a small-appliance installer to install a garbage disposal, do your homework first to decide upon the right model. Realistic review 1.0 out of 5 stars Installed the Emerson Evergrind with no problem and it initially worked fine. Just before Thanksgiving (of course) it broke, with less then 3 months of light use. Motor is locked up, blades don't turn freely. I used the wrench to manually turn the blades from the bottom and you can feel to resistance. It runs now but you can still feel the resistance when manually turning it from the bottom and it is extremely loud. Will have to replace. Hopefully its covered under a manufacture warranty. I'll follow up on the post once I make contact with Emerson.The sink drain portion was the same size as the old one which was still in excellent shape, so it was reused; as a result installation took me less then a half -hour to remove the old one and install the new one by myself. This runs much smoother and quitter then the old one ever did; very satisfied with the fit and quality so far; based on this and how long the old one lasted, I would definitely recommend this brand to friends an family.First I am disappointed in the grind. I never had a unit where my drain pipes clogged so much. Over 30 years of one disposer or another and this one was the worst at grinding. Also after 3 years, I have a water leak that comes right through the unit and out of the bottom where the electric cord comes out. Very disappointed. I should have purchase another brand with a better warranty!!! TOTALLY NOT RECOMMENDED!!!The whole project took only a couple of hours and miraculously didn't require any last minute trips to the hardware store. We also ordered the InSinkErator power cord kit to accompany this, since the power cord is not included with this unit. Now that it's installed, things have been working well for the 1 month we've been using it. It is noisy, but not obnoxious. We were replacing an old Emerson unit that was original to the house (15 years old), and we're hoping this one lasts just as long.I immediately ordered the exact same one through Amazon and had a new one Sunday night. Monday morning I installed it in 15 minutes and it works GREAT. Did not have to install the upper metal ring, just unscrewed my old E202, and screwed the new one on. Changed plugs, put the drain back on and WOW. So happy and it works great. If it ever does go out, I will do the same.It cuts quickly through everything I have put down the drain without an issue. Also has some hidden features. - It has a very short distance from sink to drain outlet port. I had purchased the waste-king only to discover that the unit is so tall when connected to the sink that the disposal drain sits below the drain port under my sink. That meant that about 1 inch of water would sit in the disposal without draining.Replaced with the Emerson, and it sits about 3 inches higher due to a shorter, more compact design, alleviated the problem. - It has a plain, stainless steel sink ring. But no more! The emerson just has a plain stainless steel ring, which looks much better.The dimensions, plumbing outlets, and electrical locations are to the exact specs used for the E20, so if you're replacing the E20, it should take less than 20 minutes to install. You will not need to alter your plumbing or electrical if you use the E202 to replace the Emerson E20. Good value for the price. Very pleased.Granted, I had never used it to crush bones or hard stuff, so perhaps it has not been subjected to severe use. Nevertheless, 11 years of service was satisfactory to me. The new unit fitted exactly into the existing sink ring without problems. So far, after a month, it has worked flawlessly. It is quieter than the previous unit, perhaps because it is new. Or maybe the new motor is quieter - time will tell. The only negative issue is that a power cord was not included with the unit. I had to spend a couple of hours going to the store to buy a power cord with the proper electrical rating. Connecting the cord to the disposer was straightforward and easy, clear instructions were provided. It would have been easy, and very inexpensive, to include a power cord with the package. So, if you flip the switch and hear nothing but humming, it is pretty concerning. The good news is there are easy ways to fix a garbage disposal that’s humming, in most cases. Additionally, you won’t necessarily have to purchase any tools in order to get your disposal back in working mode. Knowing the cause allows you to quickly determine how to fix your disposal. This is generally due to a jam. If an item has been jammed in the blades of the disposal they will be unable to rotate. If this is the case simply unplug the disposal under the sink then survey the drain hole. If you discover that an object is stuck in the blades remove it. Once you have done this you can plug the disposal back in and flip the switch. There is a breaker socket located on the bottom of most disposal brands. By doing this you may be able to unlock the source of the problem. Just be certain that the disposal is not turned on when doing this. This button is usually located on the bottom of the device. I asked him why he didnt try to get the penny out and he said that he would just replace After he left, I put my hand in to see if I could get the penny lose. Aside from connecting a cord or making drain hookups, the only parts you need to assemble or disassemble are at the top, where the disposal mounts to the sink. These are the parts you have to deal with when you need to remove a garbage disposal.Called a hopper or grinding chamber, the compartment has a spinning metal plate (sometimes called a flywheel) at its base. The plate is attached to the motor and can spin at speeds around 2,000 rpm.As the food is pulverized into tiny pieces, water from the kitchen faucet washes the food bits through holes in the grinding ring, out of the chamber, and into the drain pipe.This is typically located near the top of the unit housing and feeds into the grinding chamber. The dishwasher hose fits over the nipple and is secured with a hose clamp.You have to remove the knockout before connecting the dishwasher drain hose. In most cases, you simply stick a screwdriver into the inlet and tap it with a hammer to pop out the knockout (a plastic disc). Be sure to fish the knockout disc from the grinding chamber before running the disposal for the first time.One is the motor reset button. Disposers have an internal switch or breaker that trips when the unit is jammed, to prevent the motor from overheating.If the disposal turns on but clicks off again right away, the unit is jammed. Remove the jam before resetting the button again.It's a hex-shaped recessed nut that is connected to the motor. When a unit is jammed, you can use a special wrench (which comes with the unit) or a standard Allen key to move the impeller plate back and forth to loosen the jam. Do this only when the power is off. While we have reservations about the durability of the disposal especially since the warranty will probably be expired when you need to fix it years down the road, we do hear how some people purchased this exact model to replace their old one because it lasted “10 years”, “11 years”, “15 years”, and someone even said “20 years”. In our opinion, it doesn’t seem unlikely that this disposal will give you 5 years and even then we think it’s a good purchase. For most people, a garbage disposal that comes pre-installed with a power cord takes away half the work as well as the nervousness of dealing with wires. If you want to purchase something similar to the Evergrind E202 that has a power cord, and in our opinion looks better than this Evergrind, then take a look at the Moen GX50C. It is a compact garbage disposal so it’s an attractive buy for those with little room under the sink as well.
