There is no book and Elna says it's no longer available but the model 2004 book might work. There are two thread guides near the needle. Thread the left and then the right, or vice versa. Since Elna recommends 2004, then you should get it. The plus and minus usually indicates right and left for the needle position and for adjusting the zig-zag width. Plus and minus also indicates shorter and longer for the stitch length. Look through the accessories for a buttonhole foot. Your machine may have the one step, which uses a button as the guide - the button fits in the back of the foot. There is a lever near the upper left of the needle. This has to be down to stop the the foot and return it down the other side of the buttonhole. So even though you can save some money by sewing, it still costs something to sew something, even if less than buying it already made most times. Lacking that, maybe you could just take it in to an elna store, and just ask someone there to show you how to thread it and use it, (and maybe take notes while they were doing that on a piece of paper or something) but even doing that, it will probably still cost you a little bit in gas money or bus fare, to even do that. If you just want to know how to use a sewing machine in general and how to sew for free, the Public Libraries are full of free to check out sewing books, and they often have some videos you can check out and watch at home about it too even. They make straight stitches to the left or the right, on purpose so when you sew on the edge of something, the fabric can still be more on top of all the feed dogs so it feeds though there better that way. You can still always sew with straight stitch in the middle too if you want. Then in that case, one thread goes into each of them.
