The new case has the thermally controlled fan located at the bottom of the housing instead of on top like the current style. This strobe features a built-in Skyport Triggering system. Visual Flash Confirmation can turn off the modeling light until the flash is ready to fire. The Eye-Cell feature allows an on camera flash to trigger the unit while being able to ignore pre-flashes for proper triggering. This kit contains two 500Ws heads, 2 Manfrotto light stands, 2-25” Portalite Softboxes, Skyport Trigger, head carry bag, stand carry bag and cables. To calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Alyce In Wonderland 4.0 out of 5 stars They sent me a set that came without the advertised Manfrotto stands. They made me pay to return the first set (with a promise to refund the shipping cost) and sent me a replacement set. The second set also didn't have the stands. Again, I had to pay upfront for return shipping. They did eventually refund the total shipping costs for both sets, but I had to harass them a bit. They sent the whole set with free shipping, so I finally got to actually try the lamps out. They are very light weight and the mechanisms are rather cheesy. They do the job, but I prefer to use other stands that have more weight and are easier to adjust on the fly. (At least I got everything I paid for this time!https://labroclub.ru/blog/boss-dynamic-wah-aw-3-manual) Overall, I'm very happy with these lamps. But honestly, you really don't know until you get them an begin using them. Some said the soft boxes were hard to put together. I didn't find this to be the case, read the instructions. I have been a fan of Scott Kelby for some time. I have some of his books and dvd's. His work was helpful to me in buying these. They seemed expensive to me at first, but once I got them home and began using them, I think they're well worth the money. Professinal quality. When I bought these they were much less expensive at Amazon than other stores. One reviewer was afraid to buy them at Amazon becasue he thought the lower price meant cheaper light stands. They are very good quality 9' Manfrotto stands. Enjoy. The softboxes definitely require two sets of hands. I love the remote capability with the skyport remote that fits directly into the hotshoe of your camera. Adjusting the output of the lights and setting up different groups is really simple. The quality of light is fantastic and it also comes with a carrying case for taking this kit on location. Highly recommended!I had been renting one from my local Camera venue and realized it was time to go to the next level. I do not like the softboxes that came with the kit and will get better ones in the future. For right now I use umbrellas to get the desire effects that I want. The lights are awesome and they keep color consistent and I would recommmend them to anyone looking to go to the next level in their photographic experience. 4 stars from me for this product.Other then that, these are awesome and provide plenty of light!I'm happy with it.Used the trigger on my camera and it was ready to shoot right away and worked after like 10 minutes (unpacking and assembly) The Kit is just amazing. Have not had much time to test. At maximum power they are like an explosion of light turning the whole room into a white glow. When powered down the create absolutely great light. Very soft.http://www.acquaproget.com/images/9.8-hp-mercury-outboard-service-manual.pdf Easy to adjust and create nice effects. As said in the title if you thing photoshop is cheating the these lights should probably be outlawed right away. From the few pictures last night my guess is that to create the same effects in photoshop or gimp would take me 1 hour and there it is straight out of the camera. Everything about the image was amazing: sharpness, skin tone, light, shadows. Going forward I think I will be very good customer of Elinchrom. It really makes a big difference to the overall weight of the heads themselves and of course, especially to a two head kit. The moulding for the Elinchrom BX is crisp, but without any sharp edges or corners. At the front of the head is the locking ring that secures the accessories. It has two positions for lock and unlock which are clearly marked with an open and shut padlock symbol so that you know where you are. While we are at the front end, both the Elinchrom 250 and 500 use Elinchrom’s now traditional 100w Leuci modelling lamp. Both models are fitted with high-speed, daylight balanced (5500K) flash tubes that will capture movement. The grip handle has a nice feel with the addition of some rubberised material and Elinchrom have also used the underside of the handle to house two spare fuses. A fan in the base of the head cuts in and out as and when the unit needs to be cooled. To attach the BX to a stand, the unit has a nice bracket with a quick lock knob that adjusts the level of the head. All the controls for the Elinchrom BX are on the rear of the head and are well laid out and easy to see. The main control panel has a series of white buttons that control the heads key features. Those include buttons for power, slave cell, audible beep and flash test.Let’s look at them one by one. First the power, relatively easy to understand as it’s calibrated in stops over a five stop range with five adjustments per stop for ultra fine control. Two white buttons make the power go up or down from 6.3 maximum to 2.3 minimum, a range of 500 to 31j on the 500 and 5.3 to 1.3 a range of 250 to 16j on the 250 version. This is a nice feature to have in my opinion, as the modelling light comes back on as soon as the head recycles, telling you that the head can be fired. The modelling lamp can also be set at proportional, or by pressing the top button, a user setting of your own choice. Having said that, Elinchrom have a nice feature that controls the length of time the bleep sounds. So you can now have a long or short bleep depending on your mood and whether you like the sound of birds in the studio.Apart from using the slave cell or a standard sync lead to trigger them, (no problems as they only have a 5v trigger voltage), the BX has the EL-Skyport wireless trigger system built in. A transmitter is included in each two head kit so that you can have a cordless trigger system from day one. Not only does the EL-Skyport trigger the BX, but it will also operate as a remote trigger system. By pressing the power and mod lamp buttons you can select up to 4 group settings, G1, G2, G3 and G4. An ideal system if you have your lights up high on a ceiling mounted system. Should you find yourself in a position where other Skyport users are working, you can select a different frequency (there are 8 to choose from) so that you don’t accidentally trigger someone else’s lights. So again, by using a combination of the white buttons, you can set the correct number of pre flashes to trigger your flash. With all these settings and options, you may get a little lost from time to time and Elinchrom have also thought of this and included a master re-set programme. By holding down the two power buttons, the unit will go back to a basic factory setting that will let you reset everything again from scratch. If you’re a world traveller you’ll like these heads because they are multi voltage (90-270v) and can be used pretty much anywhere you take them. I’ve already mentioned the high-speed flash tubes, but didn’t quote any figures. So for those of you wanting to capture movement, here we go. As you would expect from these figures, the recycling times are also fast, about a second for the 250 and just over a second for the 500 back to full power again. The BX 250 two head kit is really compact, comprising of one nice padded bag for the pair of heads and mains leads and another really small padded long case for the clip lock stands and soft boxes that come with the kit. I don’t have a combined weight for the whole kit, but I would imagine it is well under 10k for the whole lot. Having the kit in two separate bags also makes sense because you can carry the stand bag over your shoulder, leaving only the head bag to carry. That leaves the photographer one free hand for all the other things they need. But seriously if weight and size is an issue for you then the Elinchrom will tick your boxes. As you know I’m always a bit wary of shooting people with soft boxes because of the square catch light they can leave in the eyes. However the small soft boxes in the kit are extremely easy to put up, and more importantly, just as easy to take down, making them as portable as brollies. But it may be worth investing in brollies at a later stage. As for powers, both the 250j and 500j options are tried and tested and either power will shoot a huge range of applications. If you are already at ISO 100 and f16 (for example), you can try moving the lights further from the subject, use ND filters on the lens or strobe, or get less powerful lights.I can definitely tell a difference if I move the lights back, but ideally I want to be able to adjust the lights so that I don't have to move them back further. A new portable flash unit, to create absolutely stunning photographs. To me it’s just like a dream come true, and in this article I’ll explain why. Disclaimer: I’m not getting paid to write this article. I think I have the most beautiful job in the world and I want to spread my enthusiasm, to make our world a better place by sharing my experience, knowledge and measurements. Just take the information to your advantage and be happy to live in such an exciting time period. Why am I using a flash with portrait photography. A flash enables me to accentuate the facial features of my model. It enables me to create beautiful jawlines and I can make the face and body to appear taller or wider by modifying the kind and angle of the flash light. It also means that the better the quality of the flash light is, the sharper the pictures will be. With a good flash I can obtain a way better color rendition. Skin colors are spot-on, colors on the clothes are vivid and natural and color casts are gone, without the need of Photoshop. When my model is in front of a beautiful landscape I can use flash to illuminate my model and I can adjust the camera exposure to darken the landscape. That way, the sky can be absolutely perfect blue and the landscape will be extra saturated, pushing those vivid colors to the viewer without the need of Photoshop. In addition can the flash give the model a beautiful highlight into the eyes. This enables the model to communicate and to attract the viewer. I don’t like “dead eyes”, I want them to sparkle. What makes the ELB 500 TTL a must-have to me. The new Elinchrom ELB 500 TTL hanging in the Elinchrom Snappy on a Manfrotto stand I’ve been waiting for a game changer in the world of flash light since 2006. I had some special wishes, because I wanted to have sharp pictures with perfect colors, with beautiful blurry backgrounds and captured at exactly the right moments: when I press the shutter. But often I have to carry a lot of heavy equipment with me and I’m with 1m68 not that tall, so I needed to have a lightweight and portable solution. A solution which I can put on a tripod in high winds, without having to worry about it falling down because of the top weight. The unit had to be powerful so I could work against bright sunlight, and it had to have a certain mode so I could use it during events in the field: TTL, so I could put my camera on semi-auto (Aperture Priority mode for example) without the need to worry about using my Sekonic light meter to measure the exposure of my subjects: on festivals and live events not practical of course. In the past couple of years I have done a lot of investigation about my wishes and choosing the best flash light. But there wasn’t any flash which could deliver what I wanted. Elinchrom became the brand-to-go for me, because they did something unique with the quality of their flash light, which I will describe later on in this article. In 2009 Elinchrom released their Quadra unit: a small portable flash unit with a beautiful quality of light. In 2015 Elinchrom released the ELB 400 with an even better quality of light and new functionalities. But unfortunately it still didn’t fulfill all of my wishes unfortunately. Here they are: The unit has to be portable. I’m with 1m68 not that tall and I’m carrying a lot of heavy equipment already. Weight? Fine, but not on top of the tripod. I want to have a small lightweight lamp head on the top of the tripod and the heavier unit more to the bottom, so I can use it better on mountains and windy situations without problems. It has to be powerful: I want to overpower the sun, to create blue skies and to use a lot of different modifiers and color gels to create mood. It needs TTL: I want to use the unit at events and festivals to make great portraits, but I need to have the camera on semi-auto (Aperture Priority mode for example) to capture the moments. The flash then has to fill in the right exposure automatically. It needs to have HS (Hi-Sync) or HSS (High Speed Sync) so I can use short shutter timings and larger apertures, to create beautiful blurry backgrounds while using flash, without the need of ND-filters in front of the lens. I also want to be able to use the flash in my studio, as an extra light. It would be great to use it on mains electricity too, so I don’t need to worry about battery capacity. It needs at least 2 connections for the lamps, so I can use one as the main light from the front, and another as hair light from the back or as fill light. I want to be able to adjust those 2 lights precisely. I want to freeze motion during movement of my model, so the unit needs a short flash duration or enabling me to work with short shutter speeds. The system needs a good modeling light. I use that to see how the light interacts with my model, I use it for a better autofocus in difficult situations and, most importantly, my makeup artists love to use it to do the makeup, because the “what you see is what you get” effect. And in the future I want to do more with video so that would be great to use. The unit has to recharge fast: during fashion work I sometimes need to capture the moment, making 2 photos a second. The unit just “has to work”. I don’t want to focus myself on my equipment, I want to focus myself on my model. But today the time has come. Elinchrom created my dream portable flash unit: in my opinion the flash unit that fits me the best. So it’s more than 10x more powerful than a Speedlite or other on-camera flash. I don’t need a new trigger: my current trigger, the Skyport HS, works with it after a software update. The Skyport HS then becomes a Transmitter Pro. It has that unique Elinchrom distribution of light.
