The motor features a 4-pole design providing better effi ciency and more torque which meet the demands of today s off-road vehicles. 2 ALWAYS mount the ESC in a position where free air can flow through the heat sink during operation. ALWAYS turn on the transmitter before connecting the battery to the ESC. ALWAYS disconnect the battery from the ESC when not in use. Make sure the input battery is fully charged before connecting to the ESC. DO NOT attempt to use with brushed motors. Use heat-shrink tubing to insulate any bare wires between the motor battery and ESC, and from the ESC to the motor, to prevent a short circuit. Allow the ESC to cool before touching. DO NOT run the car near water. Never allow water, moisture, or any foreign material onto the ESC s PC board. Never power up the ESC before plugging it into the RX and switching on the transmitter (TX). Keep out of reach of children. DuraTrax is not responsible for incidental damage or personal injury as a result of misuse of this product. The Castle Quick Field Programmer makes for quick parameter adjustments at home or at the track without having the need for a computer. The Castle Link USB interface can be used to more finely tune the Element ESC by opening up more tuning options and allowing for a full customization of settings. The USB interface also enables ESC software updates through the internet. Both the Quick Field Programmer and USB programming kit are sold separately at retailers throughout the U.S.A. 5 Mount the ESC in a position where air can fl ow through the heat sink. This will allow the ESC to perform at maximum effi ciency and minimize the chance of overheating. Shortly after, multiple tones will sound and all the LEDs will light up. D. There is no polarity on the motor to ESC wires and does not matter which two wires are changed. 7 The following section explains each programmable feature and how it will affect the drive ability of your vehicle. Follow these steps to change settings on your Element ESC without having to use a computer. 8 STEP 1: Turn the transmitter on. STEP 2: While holding full throttle on the transmitter, plug the battery into the ESC. After a few seconds, four rings in a row will signal full throttle calibration. Continue to hold full throttle until a second group of four rings is heard. Then, relax the throttle to neutral. The ESC will beep twice, pause and beep two more times, signaling that the ESC has now entered the programming mode. STEP 3: Programming is always presented in sequential order and always starts with the first setting (Reverse Lockout) within the first section (Reverse Type). The fi rst beep(s) signifi es which adjustable feature you are on and the second beep(s) signifi es which setting is waiting for a yes or no answer. As you go through each option, you will need to answer yes by holding full throttle, or answer no Once an answer has been accepted, relax the throttle back to neutral for the next question. After a no answer is accepted, the ESC will then go to the next setting option in that section. After a yes answer is accepted, the ESC will skip to the fi rst option in the next section. Setting 1 Reverse Lockout (Default): Usually not allowed in racing. This will enable the reverse function after the ESC senses two seconds of neutral throttle. Commonly used for racing events. BRAKE AMOUNT: Sets what percentage of available braking power is applied with full brake. Setting 1 25 Power: Allows only 25 of available braking power at full brake. Good for 2WD vehicles on soft dirt. Setting 3 Low: Light acceleration limiting. Good for most situations. Setting 5 Disabled (Default): Acceleration is only limited by battery ability. DRAG BRAKE: Also known as auto brake. This transforms the speed control s dead band into brakes with a pre-determined frequency and value. This means anytime the transmitter trigger is returned to the neutral position (dead band), the brakes will be applied at the specifi ed percentage. Setting 1 Off (Default): Vehicle will coast with almost no resistance from the motor at neutral. Setting 2 10: Low amount of braking effect from the motor at neutral throttle. Setting 3 20: More braking effect from the motor at neutral. Setting 4 30: Fairly high braking effect from the motor at neutral. Setting 5 40: High braking effect at neutral. DEAD BAND: Adjusts the neutral width of the transmitter. If your ESC will not respond to Neutral throttle, make this setting larger. Setting 1 Large: ms Setting 2 Normal: ms (Default) 11. Setting 1 None: Does not cut off or limit the motor due to low voltage. DO NOT use with any Lithium Polymer batteries. With continued use, the radio system may eventually cease to deliver pulses to the servo and ESC and the vehicle will not be controllable.http://www.jfvtransports.com/home/content/boss-dr-rhythm-dr-550-instruction-manual Setting 2 Auto-LiPo (Default): RECOMMENDED This setting automatically detects the number of LiPo cells you have plugged in. It will automatically set the cut-off voltage to 3 volts per cell. The ESC will beep the number of cells in your LiPo pack between the initialization tones and the arming tones on the initial power up of the controller. A good setting for racing or bashing in any vehicle using 8-12 cell NiMH or NiCd packs. Use this setting for 2 cell (7.4V)LiPo packs. You will irreversibly damage your packs using a lower cutoff voltage. Use this setting for 3 cell (11.1V) LiPo packs. You will irreversibly damage your packs using a lower cutoff voltage. This is a setting for 4 cell (14.8V) LiPo packs. You will irreversibly damage your packs using a lower cutoff voltage. Increasing the timing advance will do just the opposite. Setting 1 Lowest: A maximum effi ciency setting giving long runtimes and cooler motor temperatures.Troubleshooting If you re still having diffi culties with your DuraTrax Element ESC after trying the suggestions offered here, please contact Hobby Services technical support at the or phone number in the next section. PROBLEM PROBLEM 14 My ESC may or may not arm, but it will not calibrate to my transmitter. 1. Make sure you have both your throttle and brake endpoints (called EPA or ATV on your radio) on the throttle channel between 100 to 120. 2. Make sure if you have a Futaba or Futaba made transmitter to have the throttle channel set to the reversed position. My ESC calibrates for the full throttle and full brake positions but won t calibrate to the neutral throttle position (yellow LED keeps flashing). 1. Try moving the throttle trim one way, then the other (usually towards the throttle side is best). Copper bars have a much lower resistance. Double check your solder connections on the battery plug and make sure the battery is showing good voltage. Overheated motor or hot power plugs. 1. The motor is geared too high. Change to a lower gear setup.Motor runs properly, then motor goes dead. 1. The built-in thermal protection may be automatically shutting down power to the ESC due to overheating conditions. 2. Check for binding drive train, bad motor or incorrect gear ratio for track conditions. Check gear mesh, replace motor or change gear ratio. Let the ESC cool down and operation can be reattempted. Motor and Rx do not work. Make sure the motor battery is fully charged and that good contact is being made between the motor battery and ESC and from the ESC to the receiver. Try powering the receiver directly from a separate Rx battery if the receiver now works, the problem may be the ESC and require servicing. 16 Before sending your ESC in for service, it is important that you review the Troubleshooting Guide on this instruction sheet. Hobby dealers are not authorized to replace ESCs thought to be defective. Do not cut the input wires of the ESC before sending it for service. During that period, we will repair or replace, at our option, any product that does not meet these standards. You will be required to provide proof of purchase date (receipt or invoice). If, during the warranty period, your ESC shows defects caused by abuse, misuse or accident, it will be repaired or replaced at our option, at a service charge not greater than 50 of the current retail list price. The lhs had said that it was the same as castle's sidewinder system which is what I wanted to purchase but it was on back order, so I went with the duratrax system instead of waiting. I had nothing but heat issues with the system. Tried tons of diff gearing combinations and the only thing I seemed to accomplish was going from hot to hotter and then back again. I couldn't find any useful info through google and the lhs tried to help but no matter what the motor was still running to hot. I called duratrax to ask them for advice and they told me without actually saying it that we suck and don't know our own products. Recently I just started to upgrade from that system and I bought a castle mmp esc. I saw the number for technical support for castle and since the duratrax system was made by castle I decided to call their customer support to see if they could help with it. I figured I had nothing to lose. The customer support was completely different. Even though the tech said it's not our system he decided to try to help out with it anyways. He said the esc was actually the same esc as the sidewinder (not sure if it's v2 or sct or if those two are the same as well) but the motor was diff then any of the castle motors from looking at the components and dimensions for it. He said it is a smaller motor then anything that castle makes and that I needed to go with really conservative gearing for it. Largest spur possible and a 12 or 14 pinion gear. Since the motor was so small though it's going to have heat issues basically no matter what. After regearing and lowering the timing of the motor it does now seem manageable. I never went that extreme on the gearing before because I was told at the lhs that I would under gear it and cause more heat issues by doing so. I'm going to eventually swap out the motor for a castle motor and probably won't have any issues with it and be able to use a normal gearing without heat issues. I'm sorry my post wasn't relevant enough for someone that doesn't own the system and never will. I wasn't asking for help only sharing information. If you wanted more details you should have asked. Some things didn't seem to fit right and a few others seemed to strip out but that's ok, duct tape fixes everything. I tossed this bad boy in my truck and had to test it out immediately. It had been raining for a day and a half in Fort Bragg but I didn't mind because water is an excellent conductor of electricity and that can only cause my electronics to run better. So I drove really fast to a construction site that was nothing but mud and ran 4 packs through it the first time out. I'm still confused as to why I could fry an egg on it after I was done. Duratrax had no recommended gearing. Short runs up and down the road were done in order to test the truck and gearing. Once again this was only supposed to be some added info for anyone that might have ran into the same problem I had. Hopefully no one else does but just in case, I thought this might help. You also said when starting out you should start with a conservative gearing as a starting point and go from there. Now obviously 3300 does not equal 3900. I don't wear a helmet and ride a short buss to work so I can comprehend that (even though I've always wondered if the windows taste like strawberries). So with the same battery a lower kv motor will have less rpms and therefor be a slower motor. So seeing as I used gearing for a slower motor that was 600kv less wouldn't that be gearing it on the conservative side and not overgearing it. If I had geared it the way a 5000kv motor should be geared to my understanding that would be overgearing it. I can admit when I'm wrong and am still learning a ton about this hobby. If I'm incorrect please show me my error so I can actually learn something, not just belittle me and offer no help. Also btw, I was never complaining and if you read my entire first post you would see that I did recommend a gearing that was recommended to me. I didn't belittle you until you took the potshot at me, so calm down and stop playing the victim. I tried giving you some pointers, and explanations on what I saw you could have done wrong, but I guess you chose to overlook them.Going a different route, any time you swap motors from a low KV to a high KV you will have to reduce your pinion size initially. It may very well be that you can run the same gear you had before but typically not. In my case the Castle 3800 kv motor runs cooler than the stock VXL 3500 kv motor even on the same gearing, but the Castle has a bigger stator and is a 4 pole vs 2 pole motor. This is why I joined this forum, was to learn. I started back into this hobby about 2 or 3 months ago when I took a Graphite Chassis RC10 out of a box in the garage, dusted it off, and started to rebuild it. There are actually pics of it on RC10TALK.com and rcuniverse.com i believe. I join forums to learn and to be around other people that find this hobby as fun as I do. That being said I still didn't overheat my motor. I do understand that it only takes a minute to get a motor hot and when you're trying out a new motor you need to constantly check the temps so you don't overheat it. I've read in these forums where people were putting their truck's together and they were missing parts. They contacted Team Associated and without question they shipped new parts. Duratrax told me once again they had NO info for their product. I've talked with Castle's staff over the phone and not only did they honor a coupon that was expired, but they also helped me gear a motor they didn't sell (the duratrax motor). I've had an even better experience with costumer service but I'm going to start a new thread to praise that company because they went above and beyond any type of costumer service I've ever dealt with. Since I had such an excellent experience with customer service with other companies and such crap customer service from duratrax was part of the reason for the thread. The fact that I'm a noob and was having trouble gearing the motor was not. In fact after I was having trouble with the motor I did a bunch more research and rebuilt my tranny and diff because I was thinking it wasn't the gearing but the way I built my truck. I did in fact build my diff and trans better from what I learned but that still didn't fix my heat issues. It is possible I got a crap motor. If you put two motors from the same manufacturer with the same ratings, packing, etc, that doesn't necessarily mean that they are equal. That is why there are tools out there to test the magnetic strength of the rotor and the ohms (resistance) of the stator. The other reason I didn't think duratrax's product was very good was while they do have their motor rated at 3900kv, their motor is smaller then any of the motors castle sells. Since that motor is smaller it is going to be relatively easy to have heat issues with that motor since it is in fact the size that it is. This is not something I came up with myself but some information that was passed on to me. All that said I won't ever purchase another duratrax product. I'm also not going to post in this thread anymore. I said what I wanted to say to start out with, reason for that was if anyone else (like me) was looking for info on this system through google, they might now find something. I also don't really like arguing on the computer. I find it as beneficial as if I was to put on a helmet and go outside to wait for a random short buss so I could indeed find out if the windows tasted like strawberries or not. And considering that Duratrax motor is not 540 specs dimensionally, where would one find a gearing chart for a good starting point. You should only have seen an increase of 5 degrees or 10 degrees max because of that. Another thing I have noticed is that all of the gearing chart websites and the apps (I have novak and Associated ipad apps) are all slightly conservative with their gearing recommendations. A temp gun is gonna be the only fool proof method to find your gearing.
