Press the device k ey for the type of remote you a re replac ing ( VCR, AUX, TV, or CBL ). 4. Press and hold SETUP unt il the red light blinks twice, then r e lease i t and enter the 4- digit manufacturer ’ s code. T he Ph one Up 4 s cans through your select- ed ch annels, stop ping at each for abou t 3 seconds. The P hone Up 4 s tops s canning after it reac hes the l ast channel st ored in favorite chan nel scan mem ory. Any sequenc e of key presses you regu larly perform can be red uced to a singl e key press. For e xample, press CBL PWR TV PWR TV 0 3 CBL to turn on you r cable box and your TV and set the TV to Channel 3. Erasing a Seque nce 1. Press and hold SETUP until the red light bl inks tw ice. 2. Press 9 9 5. The red light blinks twice again. 3. Press the favorite key you wan t to erase ( F1, F2, F3, F4 ). 4. Press and hold SETUP until the red light blinks t wice. Y ou r sequen ce is erased. PUNCH-T HROUGH Using Punch-Through Punch-t hrough lets you control two diffe rent de- vices withou t pressing the dev ice key for each one first. Here’s h ow it works. Not a ll of the Phone Up 4’s k eys are u sed by e v- ery device. I f you selec t one device, then select anothe r device that does not us e all of the func- tions, the Phone Up 4 can sti ll control some of the first device’s functions. For exam ple, a T V is often the only de vice that uses the v olume keys. If you pres s TV, t he n pr es s VCR, the volum e keys c ontinue t o o perate the T V, but other keys control the VCR. 15-1 91 7.fm Page 29 Mond ay, July 19, 199 9 12:2 5 PM For exam ple, if your T V and cable convert- er both have POW ER k eys on their remot e controls, you mus t press the desired device key before you use the P hon e Up 4’s PWR key. T urning P unch-Thr ough On a nd Off If your cable c onverter or VCR does have a vol- ume cont rol, you can t urn off punch-t hrough to let the Phone Up 4 c ontrol the volum e of those dev ic- es. Follow these steps to t urn off punch-through. 1. Pr ess th e de v ic e ke y ( CBL or VCR ) for t he device you want to use t o cont rol t he volume. To turn on punch-through, press a nd hold SETUP until the red light blinks t wice, t hen p ress 9 9 3. The red light blinks twice. The press TV. T he red light blinks twice to indicat e punch-through is on. USING THE SLEEP T I MER Pr ess i ng SLEEP turns on the Phone Up 4’s built- in sleep tim er or th e built-in slee p timer (if one ex- ists) on the device you are using (T V, cable box, or s at ell ite). Note: If the select ed de vice has its own sleep t im- er, t h e Phone Up 4’s sleep t imer is disabled. See your device’s Own er’s Manual to operate its sleep ti mer. 15-1 91 7.fm Page 30 Mond ay, July 19, 199 9 12:2 5 PM The red light blinks on ce. Leave the Phone Up 4 pointing at the de vice. The dev ice au- tomatica lly turns off after 15 m inutes (or after the time l ength you s et on the device’s built-in s leep timer). You can press SLEEP ag ain to increase t he Phone Up 4’s sleep timer by 15 minutes, up to a total of 60 mi nutes. Each time you press SLEEP, the red light flashes addi tional times to indi cate the set sleep time (once f or 15 minu tes, twice for 30 minutes, three ti mes for 45 minutes, and four times f or 1 hour). The red l ight flashe s occasion- ally to remind you that the sleep func tion has been a ctivated. Slowly alternate between pressing PWR an d the de vi ce k ey. For example, if you are sea rching for the code to operate your TV, use the following sequence.Note: Bec ause of t he large num ber of codes in the Pho ne Up 4’ s library, this proc edure can take several mi nutes. I f your device turns off during the search, but does not operate after you lock in a code, begin the search again, pausing longe r between key presses. If necessary, repeat these s teps for eac h device. 15-1 91 7.fm Page 32 Mond ay, July 19, 199 9 12:2 5 PM Do not use c ord- less or cellular phones to call f or a telephon e upgrade.If you d o not, the P hone Up 4 migh t not prope rly receive t he info rmation c oming over the telephone line. W hile the Phone Up 4 receives information, the red light oc casiona lly blinks to confirm the i nfor- mat ion transfer. W hen the Phon e Up 4 successf ully receives the information for y our infrared device s and loading is complete, the red light blinks twice and turns off. FAST SE ARCH If y ou load more t han o ne dev ice code, the P hone Up 4 has a fast search feature which le ts you quickly s earch the ne wly-loaded dev ice co des, one at a time, until you find the ri ght one. As soon as the upgrade operation is successfully completed, the Phone Up 4 is ready for you to fas t search the loaded codes. For exam ple, to s earch the c odes loaded into t he Phone Up 4’ s TV memory: 1. T urn on your TV. Point the Phone Up 4 at your TV an d press TV. T he Phone U p 4 send s the p ower sig nal for t he first TV code. 2. If your TV doe s not turn off, press 1. Y our Phone Up 4 sends the power sig nal for the second lo aded TV cod e. 3. Contin ue pressing the nu mber keys ( 2, 3, 4, and so on) until your TV responds. 4. USING DEVI CE CODES If you know a specific device code fo r your device, you can enter it directly into yo ur Phone Up 4. Specific dev ice c odes a re provide d in t he table that s tarts on P age 37. Note: You can d etermine the spec ific device code that is alr e ady loaded into your Phone Up 4 by following the st eps in “Det ermining t he 4 -Digit Code” on Page 11. Follow these steps to enter a specific device code. 1. T urn on the device you wa nt to control. 2. Press the desired d evice key ( TV, VCR, or CABLE ). 3. Press and hold SETUP unt il the red light blin ks twi ce. 4. Press 9 8 4. the red light blinks t wice a gain, indicating the Phon e Up 4 is ready to accept a device code. 5. Enter the de sired 4 -digit d evice cod e.
