I'm a little surprised that EIZO does not include a colorimeter as part of the package, given the CG222W's hefty price tag. If you're not familiar with how these settings work and how they affect image quality, you can select one of two preset targets with settings optimized for basic print or photography usage. There's also a Paper White Measurement feature that lets you measure the white level of your paper, allowing you to match colors that appear on the screen with how they will appear in print. The bottom edge sports ten function buttons (including the power switch), a power LED, and a BrightRegulator sensor that detects ambient light and adjusts the brightness for optimal viewing. There's also an upstream USB port and two downstream USB ports for connecting to external peripherals and flash drives. While it's nice to have USB connectivity, I'd prefer to have the downstream ports mounted on the side, where they would be easy to reach, rather than in the back, where EIZO has positioned them on this monitor. These panels are typically more expensive than the TN (twisted nematic) panels used in most consumer monitors, and they generally offer slower response times, but they provide superior color quality and wider viewing angles than their cheaper counterparts. The wide-gamut panel delivered as promised. Color swatches from the DisplayMate ( www.displaymate.com ) suite of diagnostic test patterns were vivid and bright and appeared uniform across the scale. Images remained clear and bright from all sides (horizontally and vertically) out to around 175 degrees. Arial fonts set to 5.3 points were well defined and easy to read. Despite tweaking the brightness and calibrating the display, the two darkest shades appeared black in the 64-Step Grayscale test. This is fairly common in cheaper monitors, but I expected a better showing from the CG222W, especially since the last EIZO monitor I reviewed, the FlexScan S2111W, aced both light and dark grayscale tests. Some motion artifacts were evident during a round of Far Cry 2, but they were not overwhelming. Since the CG222W is not really designed for gaming or watching movies, this should not present a problem for most users. You also get a monitor hood for blocking out ambient light, a screen cleaning kit, and a CD containing the calibration software and an electronic user guide. The monitor comes with a five-year parts and labor warranty, and the backlighting is covered for three years. There are plenty of affordably priced 22-inch displays out there, such as the ViewSonic N2201W, the ASUS LS221H, and the Lenovo ThinkVision L220x, that are more than capable of handling your entertainment, gaming, and general business needs. However, if you're an imaging professional who demands consistent color performance and requires the benefit of precision hardware calibration, the CG222W is worth the added expense. This is cross between running a full hardware calibration (the monitor is adjusted), and running a full software calibration (the computer video card signal is adjusted).
