Want to schedule a counter day at your location? An analysis of the impact of the proposed bill is that many consumers could see their electricity costs increase between 12 and 20 percent. With such increases on the horizon, it’s essential consumers take control of electricity usage and find ways to reduce their consumption. This nifty unit is wirelessly connected to the meter box and records total energy used as well as instantaneous electricity consumption. It also records daily, weekly and monthly energy usage and costs. In homes with time-of-use electricity tariffs, it’s possible use the monitor to measure the financial benefit of using power during off-peak periods. The unit is supplied with a current sensor (CT sensor) that opens and is clipped over the power feed to your home inside your utility box. The sensor cable is fed though the side of the box (remove a standard half-inch knockout) and connected to the transmitter. Once the CT sensors are connected to the transmitter, it communicates wirelessly with the battery powered monitor. Unless you, as a homeowner or tenant, are trained and qualified in electrical work, it’s far safer to employ a licensed electrician to install the sensors. Many homes have both 120 volt and 220 volt supplies, and an electrician knows how to install the device safely. If the power supply is three phase, a third sensor is required to correctly measure the power consumption. The transmitter can handle up to three CT sensors. The total power consumed is a function of the current measured by the CT sensor and the supply voltage, so the monitor must be told what the supply voltages are and whether the power supply is single phase or three phase. While some homes have a single tariff, others have time-of-use tariffs where the cost of electricity depends upon the time of day and in some cases whether it’s a weekday or weekend. If you are lucky, the information will be on your utility bill, but this is not always the case. You may need to contact your utility company or landlord to get the correct tariff. There is no longer a need to guess how much power each device is using, because you can accurately measure the power your appliances are drawing at any point in time or over a period of time. You may be surprised to discover that appliances you thought used little energy actually use a lot. For example, if you have a large old refrigerator, you are likely to find it’s responsible for a significant percentage of your total electricity energy use and that maybe it’s time to upgrade to a modern energy-efficient refrigerator. Learn how your comment data is processed. If you are really stuck, you can email us and we will do our best to help Very simple to set up and use and your energy use is shown simply on a very clear display. The latest version also displays the time, humidity and temperature. How much your electricity cost for those periods and how much co2 was produced to supply you with that electricity. For each time period you can also see how that compares to your average. For instance you may see that last week you used twice as much electric as usual. The sensor simply clips around the live cable feeding your meter. This is plugged into the transmitter which wirelessly sends the data about the electricity you are using to the monitor display. The monitor converts this into kilowatt-hours, the standard unit which the electricity company uses to charge you. You can input your own tariff details and you can then see how much you are spending in electricity instantly. Make instant changes to save money, energy and the environment. Now a new efergy model is available - efergy eLite - which offers all the powerful features of the original efergy wireless energy monitor, but with a much improved and larger display and economy 7 ( dual tariff ) compatability. Click here to read our new Efergy Elite Product Review. NEW Click here to view our new comprehensive guide to Wireless Electricity Monitors with the latest models and up to date pricing. Using Efergy eLite As with the original efergy wireless power meter initial installation is very quick and simple. Setting up the new dual tariff is very simple. The start and end time for tariff 1 and tariff 2 can be programmed in together with the electricity costs for each tariff - e.g. 5p per kWh (unit of electricity) for Economy-7 which starts at 1am and finishes at 8am every day, and 12p per unit the rest of the time. The Efergy display unit can be set to show instantaneous, historical, and average information on its screen. The daily average information is very useful as you can watch your average consumption drop as you take energy saving measures around your home. In addition, a pair of bar graphs compare your electricity consumption today with that of the previous day as shown in the image above from the instruction book. In history mode it is possible to examine daily (last 7 days), weekly (last 4 weeks), and monthly consumption data saved over the previous couple of years. In instant mode you can either view the current power consumption in kW or the costs per hour - i.e. how much it would cost you financially if you were to continue to use the current amount of power for one hour. In addition to the printed instruction manual supplied with Efergy Elite, there is a also a guide to saving electricity in the home. At the back of this guide is an electricity data logger which you can fill in with your weekly consumption data to track how well you are doing over the course of one year. Bill in Massachusetts Top Contributor: Cooking 5.0 out of 5 stars I have been using this for over a year and a half and it has been interesting to see the effects that all of my different appliances draw during different seasons. I have a base load of about 500 watts continuously (even in the middle of the night with all of the regular stuff off). During normal day to day activities, we stay between 1-6 KW. Since I have an electric hot water heater that draws 4500W, when the hot water is flowing, that's when my house jumps to the 5-6k range. The highest I have ever seen my whole house use is 13K when the clothes washer is pulling hot water and electric clothes dryer is running. So, despite all of the electricians trying to sell me a 20KW or larger generator to power my whole house, this device let me be confident in buying a much smaller generator, and just holding off on doing laundry during a power outage. This device easily pays for itself with the savings on being able to confidently buy a smaller generator.Numbers tell a story. You can go around turning lights on and off, computers, tv's, whatever and see how much something is pulling. How accurate is it?. well I have no scientific tests but from my rough calculation of bulbs installed and when i turn things on and off it seems fairy accurate and at minimum can be used to lower power use in your house. As a side note when I leave something on by accident and I lay down to bed, and i see my house power more than my standby night power (around.5 kwh) I know that I left something on, and then go on the hunt to turn it off. Its made me very aware of what things draw, so don't get this if you get easily obsessed or are a nerd like me. Its definitely saving me money though just leaving devices and lights off that I used to leave on all the time. Definitely worth it.Bought the Efergy Elite monitor and installed in on the mains running into my breaker panel. Very easy installation. Then I checked each breaker - and found that one breaker was drawing twice as much electricity as the rest of my house combined. Turns out, a short in my AC unit was sending a lot of electricity to ground, but not enough to trip the breaker. This monitor paid for itself immediately in electric bill savings.Does exactly what it advertises that it does. The design and feel of the receiver is nice. One complaint: backlight stopped working on day2. Can still read the display, just can't read it in the dark any more. Still love it. I'm buying another one now to read my subpanel (powered from the main panel, but with two units I can monitor both primary panel and secondary panel separately. You could also connect this to any pair of breakers you wanted to monitor. Doesn't have to be the main line. Say you want to know just how much your washer or any 120v or 240v appliance is using.I tried by all means possible to contact seller without success. The meter is reading at an error rate of 40-60 more than actual consumption compared to amp meter readings and power company monthly bill. Real consumption 330 Kwh meter is reading around 550 KWh. I don’t recommend this item.I needed to know why my energy use was much higher than everyone around my neighborhood. ComEd came several times but I was not satisfied with their findings. So, I bought and installed the 2 sensors. I’m a Mechanical engineer so opening the main electrical panel was not new to me. But if you’re NOT handy with “electrical”, then get an electrician to install it. It takes no more than 10 minutes. Setup was very easy and once running, I carried the portable monitor around and I could be anywhere in the house and can turn any appliance “on” or “off” and see what that appliance uses.I was able to educate myself and my stubborn wife about electrical usage. And now she has a good knowledge how to reduce our electric bill by simple habits because she knows what all of our gadgets in the house consume. I’m on my way to cutting my bills at least 30 or more!!! As far as “tech” support, I can’t comment because I didn’t need to contact them. The instructions were more than enough for me to make things work. Now I can see the impact of various units on the power draw. But be very wary of the ideal installation instructions. Most panels do NOT have the main feed cables in an accessible position to install the current coils in the panel. Mine is a 125A panel only two years old. All the meter to panel cables are bare buss bars way in back and sheathed to protect ones fingers. So I had to open the meter side of the panel. Do not do this unless a Certified Electrician as I am. On that side I had plenty of room and it is working fine. Having looked into how to find this information it seems that you need the hub to link it to your computer which is an extra ?42. Had I realised, I could have got the hub version for ?60 in the first place or bought a different brand which would give accurate historical data which is what i wanted and thought smart meters did. Now if I want that I have to pay the extra ?42 which means a total cost of ?80 for the full package. Surely something that is sold as a smart meter should give you accurate historical data without the need for a computer. If it can't perhaps it is not very smart at all! It was returned automatically as I failed to collect it on time. When I emailed them they resent to me. Great support. The monitor itself functioned as advertised, easy to install and setup. Plesant design and nice to see electricity consumption and cost of kwh live and historically. Makes you think about what to switch on and for how long. I've had this operational for about 3 weeks now. For current usage it's fine. History mode is I believe poor. There is no separation between peak and off peak usage nor cost. I enquired from Efergy but a little unclear response leaves me unsure. Secondly history only goes back 8 days, now that's poor. It means that I would need to be logging daily info into an Excel spreadsheet. I've looked for a more detailed product without success so far. I don't need nor want a high cost item but more historical information is important. So I wouldn't buy this product again. It does the same thing as a smart meter. Tells you how much electricity you are currently using. You will see it register when you switch on the kettle for example. One bit clips onto the main supply to the meter and the second bit sits in you kitchen so you can see it. Like the smart meter I don't think it saves you any money as every one knows that if you switch off things that is what does the saving. In order to navigate out of this carousel please use your heading shortcut key to navigate to the next or previous heading. Push the History button to access daily, weekly and monthly stored data. Use the backward and forward arr ow buttons to scroll between dates and compar e consumption data. The display has an inter nal memory, so if you need to change or remove the batteries the information stored on it will not be lost. How do I reset the display (clear the stor ed data and start again). How far does the device transmit. The 433MHz range is well suited for in-home use. This can cover 3 ?oors and is also ideal for buildings where electricity meters are situated outside. I have dashes (- - - -) showing on the display. What does this mean. Move the display closer to the transmitter and press the link button. If the dashes remain on the display this would indicate that the transmitter and receiver ar e not communicating. Is it broken? No. The backlight is on a timer to save battery life. The display should work at darker periods during the day when any buttons are pressed. The LED backlight will be activated from 18:00 hours - 6:00 hours. The display does not recognize unbalanced loads in this configuration. The degr ee 350 of accuracy will be relative to the amount of unbalanced curr ent. 3 CT Sensors. Archived from the original on 15 December 2010. Retrieved 19 January 2011. ISBN 978 0 85318 435 5.
