It should make good power, and it did just okay with a Holley 4150 I had on it. This Edelbrock carb made my motor come alive, it’s like a totally different car. Easy to install, and the tune right of the box worked so good I wouldn’t dare mess with it. Runs flawlessly with way more power and smoother than my Holley it replaced. The only adjustment I made was to tweak the idle screw just a little. I changed that only twice with minor adjustments to get it how I wanted it. You can not go wrong in buying this carb for probably any mildly built motor under 400 ci. It is not very often anymore I am this impressed with a product. You can not go wrong with this user friendly, made in The USA product. Thank you Edelbrock!It may have lost a little HP but it runs better and the fuel economy is also slightly better. The one issue that I had was that I needed a riser on the manifold to clear things like the EGR valve, which also needed an extension to clear the carb. The other issue is that with all of this lifting the carb the stock air filter housing will not fit on it anymore with a stock hood. I had to replace it with edelbrock air filter that does fit under the hood. This was all fine until I moved to California and now my car doesn't even pass the visual smog inspection. It may be worth some money and might be better for your car to just get it refurbished.Despite Edelbrock's reputation, I actually thought this was probably going to be a bit of a downgrade in terms of power and performance. Man, was I glad I was wrong. This carburetor isn't just as powerful, but the fact that it is more practical than the Street Demon makes it amazing. My Street Demon was clocked for a 150HP NO dump and was aggressively dialed to burn rich. After installing the Edelbrock, I'm just glad I can burn 87 without having to worry about breaking something. This product has been no less than absolutely satisfactory and I would recommend it to anyone doing a restore for a 350 small block chevy engine. I have bought and used the tuning kit and had basically planned to copy the 1405, and found out as you it wasn't quite that simple. I ended up with some type of a compromise, don't remeber exactly. I still have the kit. I'll be pulling the carb and using the 1405 chart. Good luck, RobertIt will teach you how to service the carb. You can change the jets with the carb on the car, it's one of the best features of the Edelbrock carb. You just remove the top lid of the carb and the jets are right there. You most likely will have to change the jets (as I did) from the stock 1406 jets to the 1405 jets and metering rods. The fuel bowl is part of the Performer carb body so there is no fuel spillage. You just have to fish your jets in and out of the fuel bowls. Fine tuning the metering rods and springs can even be done on the side of the road or in a parking lot with just a nut driver. That said, I never was able to get the WOT tuned on it. I don't think the 1406 is too lean for a performance small-block. In my experience, it was too rich. Check your ignition, timing and plugs, the fuel pressure (4-6 psi), and the float levels.I have a pressure gauge right before the carb, inline. That hard start sounds like a timing issue, but I would start buy doing the basic checks, which has already been suggested. I would also install a pressure gauge as well.It gets the problem if it sits awhile after running then I try to start it. -Should I look at fuel pressure even though it is a factory spec one for a 1983 5.0?
