ecs px1 manualThe layout of this board is really good and for once we do not have a rainbow of colors that detracts the eye, although there is still plenty of marketing information on the board to let you know what options are important to ECS. The color combination could stand to be a little more coordinated but overall ECS is improving with each release. The board was simple to install into our case and all connections were easily reached. The board features a four-phase voltage regulator system that provided excellent stability throughout our testing along with ECS's first true heatpipe system. The board looks like it is performance oriented and fooled us into thinking so until we met the BIOS. The board also includes four fan headers and a nice Smart Fan control system. The DIMM module slots' color coordination is correct for dual-channel setup based upon the premise of installing DIMMs in the same colored slots for dual-channel operation. The memory modules are slightly difficult to install with a full size video card placed in the PCI Express x16 slot. The 24-pin ATX power connector is located behind the DIMM slots. The six Intel ICH8R SATA ports are color coded orange, while the JMicron JMB363 SATA port is red and located next to the green IDE connector. We found the positioning of the SATA ports to be excellent when utilizing any of the PCI slots although we still prefer the floppy drive connector to be near the memory slots to facilitate better cable management. The ICH8DH is passively cooled with a low-rise heatsink connected to the heatpipe system and remained fairly cool to the touch throughout testing. The chassis panel is located to the left of the battery. The clear CMOS jumper is located above the battery. The board comes with two physical PCI Express x16 connectors (x16 and x4 electrical), two PCI Express x1 connectors, and three PCI 2.3 connectors. The layout of this design offers a very good balance of expansion slots for a mainstream board while providing very good clearance space for graphics card utilization. The first PCI Express x1 and PCI slots will be blocked by a dual slot graphics card but considering the dearth of PCI Express peripherals this is fully acceptable while leaving two PCI slots open if you run a CrossFire combination. The 8-pin ATX power connector is placed on the far left side of the CPU area and did not interfere with our various cooling units although we once again recommend installing the power cable before any large HSF is utilized. The 4-pin Molex connector is required for dual graphics card installations. The Intel P965 MCH chipset and PVM components are passively cooled with mid-rise heatsink units that did not interfere with any installed peripherals. Unfortunately, this nicely arranged heatpipe system goes to waste considering the limited overclocking capabilities, but as the board is intended for use in a media center configuration we will say it assists in cooling and keeping the system quiet. The panel also includes two LAN ports, four USB ports, and an e-SATA port. The LAN (RJ-45) ports have two LED indicators representing Activity and Speed of the connection through the Intel and Realtek Gigabit controllers. The audio panel consists of six ports that can be configured for 2, 4, 6, and 8-channel audio connections for the Realtek ALC 885 HD codec.For HTPC use, it might simply be the best board available. Yes, you heard me right.Some other boards have these features, but none have them all. This is VERY important. I'm not entirely sure how important DRM support is audio -- it seems like HDCP support is still more a factor of having the correct video card and display rather than the motherboard. As far as I'm aware, if you have a motherboard that has an optical out connection to get one of the newer graphics cards that has an HDMI port, you can route the optical audio out over to the graphics card and it will send the audio along the HDMI cable.What can this board currently do that the MSI board cannot.When it is, it will need a secure audio path as well. It will still work, but won't be at full resolution.In which you overclock all the motherboards to a very reasonable level like if the normal FSB is 266 then overclock it to 300 or 325 (where you don;t have to increase the voltage and lower the memory timing).So that the vast number of people who like to keep it safe in overclocking can see which one is going to bring more gains at minimal risk. ( and they should be tested on atleast three different benchmark, one normal multitasking benchmark, one game benchmark and one encoding sort of benchmark.)I have a couple systems that ran great with a 50 (sometimes more) overclock initially, and then a few months later I had to drop the overclock down to more like 40. I even have one system now that I can hardly overclock at all, where is it used to hit a 30 overclock without difficulty.If ECS is only able to 345 MHz on the bus right now, in ideal circumstances, realistically you are probably looking at 320-333 bus speed for long-term use. For people that don't care about overclocking, they can just ignore our overclocking results and look at the base performance. In our experience, once users start looking at overclocking, they would much rather have a board that easily overclocks to 333 MHz and can be pushed to much higher overclocks with a bit of effort rather than a board that can barely reach 345 MHz.https://labroclub.ru/blog/boss-bps242rf-manual In the case of the former, you are just about guaranteed to be able to overclock is much as you want (within reason), without having to pull your hair out.Unfortunately, that usually doesn't happen, as you get a lot of variation between the boards in terms of what sort of memory timings and speeds they can hit with overclocking. The ECS board starts out with worst timings, and they certainly don't get better as you start overclocking.Unless you need Intel ViiV support, there's really no reason to consider the ECS board. Better boards are available for less money, including the MSI board. I never expected a review from AT so soon. The timing couldnt have been more perfect. From what im seeing the board is pretty decent for someone who has no desire or intention to pursue high overclocks. I sent an email to Newegg stating that I was 90 sure that the board only had one PATA port and to their credit, they thanked me for bringing it to their attention and changed the website to show one PATA port.There was only one PATA port after all. It turns out that the person who answered my pre-purchase inquiry got zero out of three questions right. I did look at the reviews online, but there was very little information there. I even read the manual prior to the purchase, but as it turns out, some of the important features of the BIOS had been pared back on the BIOS version I received with the board. Talk about bad luck. I had done all of my homework and still got burned. It happens.What do I do with this motherboard. I was very unhappy knowing that my premium OCZ Platinum memory that cost almost as much as the processor was only running at 67 of the expected speed.I was stuck between Option A and Option C. I had no reply from my email to ECS requesting an upgrade through them and I wasn't going to return perfectly good memory to Newegg. I was so undecided though on the other two options, live with the motherboard and its slower performance or return it, that I decided to call a friend for advice. He noted that computers are a central part of my life and I wouldn't be happy with a sub-par system. He said that the cost of returning it was a small price to pay for what I had learned. I think he was right.I was, after all, planning to write up my experiences and I certainly was getting a boatload of those!That seemed reasonable to me, and I sent the motherboard back.All of the Core 2 Duo motherboards seem to have issues, but most of the high-end board allow for voltage adjustment of the DIMMs. Some reviewers reported that in order to adjust the voltage, you might have to insert one stick of 1.8 Volt memory just to get the motherboard to POST. Problems, problems, problems! I have yet to find a motherboard that I like with all of the features I am looking for and they are very overpriced at this time. Just be aware of limitation. Not an expert on SLI, but most boards split the x16 to 2 x x8 which makes more sense. Essentially, one mid-high-end video card or two-low end video cards only make sense with this board. Tech support got zero of three questions right My 2 x 1 GB Platinum DDR2 800 memory shows as DDR2 533 and no way to change it in BIOS. Check manual online for approved 512 MB modules if you want to be 100 sure of compatibility. Tech support said that any non-ECC unbuffered memory is supported. Memory requiring more than 1.9 Volts may not run at full speed. Some overclocking options listed in the manual have been pared back If you have an IDE hard drive, connect it up to the IDE channel rather than purchasing an IDE- SATA adapter. There is also a red SATA port on the motherboard that may play a part in the RAID configuration, but I didn't fully explore this.I saw it with the ECS P965T-A and other end users report it with every major vendor. There is a term for this. It's known as 'bleeding edge' in the biz. It seems reasonable to infer that the boards supporting the Conroe Core 2 Duo processors were rushed to market. Intel had a marked advantage. They knew what the final specs of the Conroe CPU were going to be. Other vendors were rushed to get working versions to market before their competitors. Premium prices and high demand were there for taking for the earliest to market.Perhaps it goes with the bleeding edge territory, but it would not be unreasonable for a company like ECS to send out 10 or 20 motherboards with documentation and accessories to real world end users so they can evaluate the product, review their issues and problems and recommend changes. Something like this may actually be happening with the reviews done by the professionals, but why not add the average Joe. Microsoft has done just this with their Beta 2 version of Vista and I commend them for this. I was excited to be part of that program and will likely be one of the first in line to get Vista.Future releases will undoubtedly be more stable, but that is why there are Rev 1.0 B's. I know for a fact that I am far more forgiving of ECS now than I was before I wrote this review.I m sure that I would have some constructive criticism to offer before it is released to the public!As it turns out, overclocking is the very option I needed to get my OCZ 2.1 Volt Platinum memory to work at the advertised 800 MHz speed. And that isn't the only resource you will want in your toolkit if you are going 'bleeding edge'. Information and experience are key if you are working with brand new technology and expect to be successful.And they should note that the Intel 965 chip will support DDR2 800 memory, but not all motherboard BIOS default settings will properly recognize the RAM at the 800 MHz speed.The P965T-A is actually maybe a little bit more than I expected for the price hardware wise and a lot less than what I expected support wise.Don't freak out! There are No LEDs on this motherboard. Funny, but I miss the LEDs on the ABIT AN8 SLI.I might even go back to my 1998 Micron 450 MHz Pentium II system for a while. At least it still works and I don't want to have to RMA a second motherboard to Newegg!It has a lot of almost state of the art features at a great price, and it is the price I like the most, being on a budget.The actual hardware installation is actually pretty easy and even almost fun. Take your time and follow the instructions in the manual and look on-line for installation help.One high performance video card should work well, but that isn't why you buy an SLI motherboard in the first place and at x16 - x4 this really can't be called an SLI motherboard.He also notes that only ATI Crossfire is supported at x16 and x4 due to the limitation of the chipset. There was some confusion about whether or not this motherboard was SLI capable at the time of my writing this article and apparently there still is.
