Ocrotirea naturii ca functie a societatii umane atat din fiecare stat in parte cat si acomunitatii internationale reprezinta un sistem de masuri organizatorice, juridice(legislative), tehnice si educationale, avand drept scop ocrotirea naturii si deci a resurselornaturale, atat pe plan local cat si global. Exista mai multe etape in desfasurarea procesului de declarare a unei zoneocrotite si anume, identificarea obiectivelor, delimitarea acestora, legiferarea si luareaunor masuri organizatorice, tehnice, mergand pana la organizarea pazei, menite inesenta, sa le fereasca cat mai mult de impactul activitatilor umane. Prin urmare, in acestcaz se actioneaza pe principiul izolarii obiectivelor ocrotite fata de influenta omului. Obiectivele ocrotite in acest fel pot fi foarte diferite, ca dimensiuni, grad de izolaresi de protectie: parcuri nationale, parcuri naturale, rezervatii naturale, rezervatiistiintifice, rezervatii ale biosferei, monumente ale naturii. Biosfera este compusa dintr-un mozaic de sisteme care sunt relationate si senumesc ecosisteme. Exista mai multe categorii de sisteme biologice, care au moduri de organizare sifunctii biologice diferite. Ele sunt stratificate pe mai multe niveluri de organizare. Sistemul apei care a stat cateva zileintr-un borcan nu va functiona mai departe daca nu are o sursa de energie numita: luminasolara. Unele organisme vor muri si se vor descompune, altele vorcreste si se vor inmulti. Aciditatea apei se poate modifica, iar apa isi poate schimbaculoarea cerand mai multa caldura si lumina. Sistemul va avea propriul ciclu de viata,transformadu-se incet. Termenul de ecosistem este o conventie. Noi putem trasa o linie imaginara injurul unei largi portiuni de teren, separand-o de rest si putem spune: acesta este unecosistem. Deseori legaturile dintre elemente in sistem sunt greu de sesizat si mai ales aceleacare se desfasoara pe o perioada foarte lunga de timp. Ciclul de viata al unor copaci dintr-un ecosistem de padure poate fi de 300-500 ani. Omul avand media de viata mai mica nu poate observa toate schimbarile mici dinaceste paduri seculare. In schimb, ciclul de viata al unui ecosistem dintr-o balta poate fi de12 luni, cel al ecosistemului din borcan poate fi masurat in ore. Astfel, cand vorbim de ecosistem ne gandim nu doar la doua, ci la trei lucruridistincte dar interdependente: componente vii, componente nevii si sursa primara deenergie, adica lumina solara. La acestea se adauga si relatiile dintre componente. Aceste relatii sunt foarte bine evidentiate intr-un lant trofic sau de hranire. Daca incepi sa studiezifauna unui tinu de la cele mai mici fiinte pana la cele mai mari, incepi sa intelegi cine emancat de cine, care sunt pradatorii si care e vanatul. Inevitabil, observi ca fiecarecreatura din sistem depinde de un adevarat lant de alte fiinte si plante pentru asupravietui. Lantul trofic reprezinta trecerea materiei organice de la un organism la altul prinintermediul nutritiei. Un lant trofic nu are mai putin de 3 verigi, insa nu mai mult de 6 verigi.Prima veriga o constituie producatorii, care de obicei sunt plantele. Rolul lor este satransforme materia anorganica in materie organica. Iar ultima veriga o constituie mereudescompunatorii, care sunt microorganismele, a caror rol este de a transforma materiaorganica in cea anorganica. Acest lant trofic contine cele mai mari verigi, iar hrana trece de la organismele autotrofe la cele fitofage si la carnivore. Intre ierburile caracteristice vegetatiei de stepa, mamifere rozatoare si mamifere carnivore exista lagaturi directe datorita modului lor de hrana. Lanturile saprofagelor si pradatorilor se completeaza in activitatea lor in multe biocenoze. Talia organismelor la un astfel de lant scade de la gazda spre parazit sau hiperparazit. Nivelul trofic reprezinta totalitatea organismelor care apartin aceleasi categoriitrofice si isi procura hrana prin acelasi numar de verigi in raport cu plantele verzi. Intr-o biocenoza de dimensiuni mari, formata din mai multe specii exista mai multelanturi trofice. Intre acestea se stabilesc anumite legaturi si astfel ia nastere reteaua trofica aunei biocenoze. Intre acestea se diting lanturi trofice principale, alcatuite din speciidominante ca numar si biomasa si care au rolul principal in transferul de substanta sienergie in ecosistem. In felul acesta se realizeaza mai multe puncte de contact intrelanturile trofice. Punctele de contact functioneaza ca niste puncte sau noduri de stabilitatea retelei. In paduri, ele sunt ocupate cu precadere de catre specii de animale ce traiesc infrunzar, cum ar fi furnicile omnivore, care opereaza in mai multe lanturi trofice. Stabilitatearetelei trofice depinde de numarul de noduri din retea, deci, de abundenta de specii cu unregim alimentar larg, de specii polifage. In afara omnivorelor, aceasta functie mai esteindeplinita si de carnivore, care controleaza foarte multe lanturi trofice.
