Freeview are making changes to the transmitter signal to improve their facilities, and these changes are being gradually phased in across the UK. Unfortunately, a small number of older boxes (around 1) can’t handle the new signal and have now effectively been rendered obsolete. The Daewoo SV900 and Bush IDVCR01 DVRs are also affected.http://tort-art.ru/userfiles/ctx670-programming-manual.xml

More details are available in this story at Digital Spy and this forum thread. That’s unlikely since they can’t pick up the signals in the first place, but we’d hang on to them for a while just in case. Or it’s possible that the new improved service might have been worth rendering a few older boxes obsolete. But it was only by chance- and a few days later- that we found out what the real problem was! Had we known about the problem in advance, we wouldn’t have let it do this.FreeSat is of course a different system to Freeview, but it’s an excellent alternative if you don’t mind having a satellite dish for satellite TV). Unfortunately mother nature has forced me to catch up with the changes and now my setpal is dead.Hope this helps anyone with one of these boxes. Both failed on retuning within two days of the change over. There seems to be nothing that can be done. It is not the manfacturers fault but Freeview should have taken the option of letting people know. There can be only one reason why they didn’t and that is that they didn’t want the hassle before they switched over. If someone comes up with afix I’d be grateful because they were good boxes and did a good job in a conventional way. Does make you wonder whether the software in them was always a bit suspect though, doesn’t it. Food for thought!. Rod Deane. 7th August. After reading the comments above I am afraid to re-scan, as it would appear that I will more than likely end up with nothing at all. My Set Top box is a Grundig DV3 Maybe if they get enough complaints (they said they are keeping a count of the number of them at least), they will investigate whether they can fix their signals to restore functionality for owners of older Freeview boxes. Given 16million households in the UK the most of whom have already got DVB that is still a lot of boxes. Selecting this option the system hung at 0 for a very long time. Aborting this I left my box with version 1.http://www.leonides.sk/images/data/ctxl-trh-w-manual.xml1 installed and everything appeared to function satisfactory until I attempted to to do a Full Scan for channels to replace my existing channels at the beginning of August. That is when my trouble started. After completion of the Full Scan, only certain channels appeared to have been found, these starting with Channel 5, Not BBC1, BBC2, ITV1 CH4 plus a number of other Channels. The lost channels were noted to have been found and designated as CHANNEL 000. Searching for information on BBC and FREEVIEW sites has been fruitless.Apparently the menu proclaimed that there was no signal coming in. After hours spent dismembering all my wiring I finally gave up. Thanks freeview for any information saying that my box was now inoperable. A truly miserable service, and yet another expense.More people are going to discover this problem the same way, poor info freeview. I think a few phonecalls will be made tomorrow.:( Your original comment was approved first thing this morning (Monday 18th), and would never have been publicly visible before this time. Ive got the same model and cant seem to get the channels back in the right order, Ive phoned to complain but no luck. Let me know if you find the key. Thankyou. Now BBC1 is on 813, BBC 2 on 806, Channel 4 on 821, I can’t remember where ITV1 and the rest have gone, also there is no information about these channels when you go into guide.I was going to complain but having read previous comments is there any point? I have 4 units here, 3 Daewoo and a Portland that my 90 year old Dad, 83 yr old Father in law, and best mate bought at my recommendation. All totally useless. Thank you very much DMOL, Thank you very much Daewoo, Thank you very much Portland, Thank you very much Freeview, Thank you very, very much !! Setpal was great. His box failed after a rescan at the weekend and he is now stuck with good old analogue (no CH5 in his area). It’s lucky that I was there at the weekend otherwise he would have been left without a signal.http://www.bouwdata.net/evenement/boss-acoustic-simulator-manual I can’t believe how badly Freeview has handled this. Come on Freeview, sort it out. I can afford to replace my equipment (even though I don’t think I should be made to) but he can’t. Some paople wil ltink that their box has failed and replace it without compalining (perhaps that’s what Freeview are hoping for). Did a re-scan and ended with channels number all over the place. I would not call this an insignificant number. Yes the in the old style cathode ray version the detectors work by detecting electron radiation imprint on the screens. Remember the hoo ha over GCHQ some years back and also where some bank “hackers” were using this technique to read computers monitors of bank staff for account numbers and indeed cheltenhams GCHQ were so worried that they had their monitors sheilded to stop this. The same is true of course for modern flatscreen PC monitors. Glad to say I’m not the only frustrated person out there!! I got the SV900 as I am deaf and can record digital subtitles on it but this is obviously no longer the case. I’ll let the local supplier (a deaf and hard of hearing society) know of the problems and hopefully they wont sell any more. Why was no warning given so I could have ignored the request to check for new channels. Can anyone tell me what to do now. Is it okay to go and buy another, will they pick up the channels. Which make to go for. I don’t know a great deal about techy stuff and was just about able to connect myself to freeview and now have to start all over again. Which make can be relied upon. Any advice appreciated. The power of the WEB saved my sanity by linking me to your site. I am too am a 1 statistic. Daewoo SetPal DS608p The word I would like to use.Why buy new TV’s when the old ones still work ! I am sure many have not. This is clear from the paucity of advanced information that was communicated to consumers ahead of the change as evidenced by the complete lack of awareness highlighted by the above correspondence.http://condit-pack.com/images/cara-portable-air-conditioner-manual.pdf It’s obviously yet another example of the culture of “burying bad news” that pervades today’s society. In my case I’m now faced with scrapping two Triax DVB 2000T digital receivers which between them cost around ?250 when originally purchased. Thanks to the lack of forewarning of this change I wasted a significant amount of my time fruitlessly trying to determine why the system displayed the “no signal can be detected” error message for seemingly no apparent reason. On contacting Triax’s technical department on (01443) 778910 all you get is a long and indistinct pre-recorded message advising of the broadcast changes and stating that the receiver isn’t defective and declining any further liability for the product. This is the shameful level of customer support shown by a U.K. based company to customers who paid a premium for equipment that purported to be of high quality and supplied, if not manufactured, by a “British” company. No concessions on upgrading or replacing the unit were offered, which was a huge missed opportunity. Even if the inoperative receiver is not the fault of the manufacturer, a goodwill gesture would have gone a long way in redeeming Triax’s repute. It just goes to show what little value businesses attach to customer loyalty these days. So, accepting that the issue was not the manufacturer’s direct responsibility, a visit to the Freeview website revealed limited information on the changes to the broadcast signal format, but gave significant prominence to the fact that only 1 of viewers were projected to be affected by the change, thereby dismissing the impact of the change as if unimportant. It is significant to note that they relish in quoting percentages rather than absolute values as this conveniently disguises the true number of people likely to be affected. Yet more spin and subterfuge. A phonecall to the Freeview help line to register my dissatisfaction with the management of the upgrade programme and the lack of clear public communications was met by repeated denials of responsibility and an eagerness to level the blame on DMOL who have responsibility for the technical management and delivery of the upgrade. It was even suggested that my views were conveyed to Ofcom as another ploy to avoid shouldering any of the blame. When I ventured to ask the person manning the help line as to how many other people had taken the trouble of reporting the issue and complaining to Freeview the person had the insolence to put the phone down on me rather than provide a truthful answer. That was the final straw that prompted me to take the time to write this account in order to highlight the contemptuous manner in which consumers are routinely treated by so many organisations nowadays, and specifically those of us who have been disadvantaged through no fault of our own over this digital broadcasting fiasco. Forget traditional values such as loyalty and moral responsibility, welcome to the 21st century where the unaccountable, grab-what-you-can ethos prevails! Since then (about the last two weeks) we have simply reverted to good old-fashioned analogue through the TV tuner. At the weekend I tried the Daewoo out of curiosity and to my surprise it was working once again. I’ll shall take great care to not re-scan again but the question is, why has it started working. Surely the powers that be can’t have noted the level of complaint and somehow worked out a workaround for these older boxes. Am I alone or have others found this mysterious rebirth of their boxes. I’m on the Rowridge transmitter and the box reports that the channel database has 52 bytes free. Since then it has not worked, it will not find any channels. Is this one that has also been affected by the upgrade. Does anyone know please? I have noticed that it seems to be all the BBC, ITV and C4 channels. I’m not too bothered about the channel guide, I just wanted to try get it working again and now it is even worse. I think it is totally unfair that we have spent money on boxes which won’t work properly now, I paid ?40 for mine because I wanted a decent quality one which would not pack up! Does anyone have any knowledge of this? I have just spent untold amount of time testing everything attached to my TV and set top box to find out what happened to BBC, ITV etc.My set top box is a TWF STB501 and is not all that old. I wonder just how many boxes are now obsolete, it must be hundreds of thousands. Has anybody heard of this affecting TVs with built in digital tuners. That could be a very big piece of merde heading for the fan. I don’t suppose it has anything to do with the new Freesat service, does it? After the scan it said no channels are found. I have now turned to Google and as a result found these threads. I guess that all it’s good for now is lovely hi-tech door stop!! Any one any ideas on what i should do now ? And the new one doesn’t detect any channels at all. On reading the instructions, it can only cope with 30 digital TV channels. So it was obsolete even before being taken out of the box. Make sure the new digibox can accept the new channel protocols. Both have now had the channels shifted as mentioned earlier and lost the on screen information. There does not seem to be a cure and the only option seems to be buy new. If enough complaints are made to the freeview company, OFCOM (insist they record your complaint and give you a complaint number),local members of parliament etc, we may get some action. Only when I found your website did I realise I wasn’t being thick. Do I take it from other comments above that it is a waste of time chasing DAEWOO for any compensation. If so, we know which supplier to avoid when buying a replacement, don’t we? I also have a Thompson DTI 1000 which is older which works ok after the upgrade as long as I remove the power cord every few weeks when it gives trouble. On turning it on it finds a new upgrade which I let it process then all ok for a while. Phoning Ferguson just gives me recorded messages saying no one is available to answer my call. I phoned Freeview (unfortunately on the 0870 number given in post 6, before I saw the other number in post 10), and a very friendly Scottish guy chatted at great length, ultimately saying nothing. If anyone does have a solution, please say! (Or if anyone has managed to get any sense out of either Freeview or Ferguson.) Thompson have no plans at the moment to issue a new download.” I said that this is extraordinarily bad customer relations, and asked him to pass on my comments to Thompson. If as a mere user you phone Freeview, they tell you you need to speak to the manufacturer; if you speak to the manufacturer they say it’s nothing to do with them, because it was Freeview who changed things. This might just get things moving and is by far the most effective way of progressing matters to a final (one way or another) conclusion. I can confirm that when this product was manufactured it was designed to meet all the criteria for it to receive the digital signal, and operate as it should do. Therefore, we had no prior knowledge that these products would not be compatible with future digital signals. Please review the statement below that has been released by Freeview in relation to this “signal shutdown”: Unfortunately, as a result, some older digital boxes will stop working. The affected models are: Unfortunately, as a result, some older digital boxes will stop working.” This definitely is caused by them changing the rules! Unfortunately, some of the earliest boxes don’t- and weren’t required to- support 8k mode. Now they’ve made the decision to use the more efficient 8k and stop supporting those very old 2k-only boxes. Still annoying, though. My old Philips ONN Digital box (circa 1999)has now lost BBC1 and BBC2 in the first stage of the switchover here in West Cornwall.I will be losing all the others sometime in August! This DTV was purchased in January 2008, so is not old in my view. I will be contacting Bush (if I can find out who they really are nowadays) and hope that they are more helpful than the others mentioned on this site. Since the TV cost ?169.99 I consider that some form of compensation should be available to enable me to buy a like-for like replacement and will be contacting Ofcom, MP, Freeview and anyone else I can think of. The problem is that a minority never gets far, so if this is a wide-scale problem maybe a No 10 petition should be set-up? I have tried a new aerial, wire, deleting offending channels, manual re-tunes and all I do is change the channels numbers but they stay in the 8xx range. Next time something that requires forward thinking is promoted I will do precisely NOTHING until the old service finally stops. It looks like a more political solution is best though I might just dump the product on the suppliers doorstep so they can deal with the waste. ONE:- I only paid about ?20 for this box about 5 years ago. TWO:- I have avoided buying TVs etc that have Freeview built-in. SO:- The moral of the story is shop around as the price does not necessarily represent quality just supplier profit level. Sadly its a disposible lifestyle and we will pay for it later but at least I did not junk my old TV and Video for some dead-end “progress”. Does that make us “victims”. Aspect ratio 16:9 and 4:3. Something went wrong. All thats required is a Freeview compatible TV and an aerial in good condition. However, if more functionality is required (or an existing TV doesnt have Freeview built in) then a Freeview set top box will be needed. Choose a Freeview box from brands including Bush, Goodman and YouView. Depending on model and manufacturer, Freeview set top boxes provide a series of additional features above and beyond simply playing live TV by enabling TV programmes to be paused, rewound or recorded. The number of tuners a box has will dictate how many channels it can record at the same time. A box with two tuners, for example, can record two programmes at the same time whilst a third is being watched. Recording Programmes To record programmes, set top boxes require hard drives. The standard is 500 GB but the range of capacities can range from 300 GB to 1TB. To work out how many hours of programmes can be recorded on any given disc size, for standard definition programmes halve the storage and for high definition programmes divide it by four. So, for example, a 500 GB hard drive will be able to store 250 hours of standard definition programming and around 125 hours of high definition programming. Additional Apps Most set top box EPGs enable some form of catch up TV. For far more flexibility, choose a set top box that can be connected to the internet. Depending on the box, apps can include BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, Demand 5 and UKTV Play whilst others can also include additional apps such as Skype, YouTube, Netflix and Amazon Instant Video. I live in an area (the Lambourn Valley in West Berkshire) which is not supposed to be able to receive Freeview at all. I struggled on for years with an expensive Nokia box whose picture and sound used to break up regularly until a friend told me about the cheapo T-101 and its ability to cope with weak signals. It really lived up to the hype and transformed our viewing overnight. When the T-101 was about to be phased out I bought another as a spare because it was so good. Unfortunately the dreaded NIT split occurred before I'd done its first scan, so overnight it became an expensive paperweight. At the time Echostar seemed totally uninterested in admitting to or sorting out the problem so I thought it would be a total write-off. Fortunately I stuck it in a box rather than chucking it out. Imagine my surprise the other day when I saw a message on the TV screen saying that my old box had just done an over the air update, which worked perfectly. However, my joy was tempered by the fact that I'd missed the opportunity to redeem the newer box from brick status. But then I found the post on here about being able to send the box back to Echostar for a free (apart from postage) update, which I did, and Bob's your uncle. So: boo to Echostar for taking so long to get their act together - I'm sure thousands of viable T-101s ended up in landfill unnecessarily, but hooray for finally sorting it out. That was fairly soon after the problem started, allowing for their initial need to develop and test the upgrade. If people were chucking their boxes away without bothering to make any enquiries, it seems to me that they were the ones who hadn't got their act together. I have no BBC, ITV, channel 4, nor five channels amongst others. Currently trying to contact Echostar to sort it so I don't have to go shopping. On the bright side, I might find something more useful to do with my evenings:) I was retuning a box for a resident at work and the dreaded 000's sent most of her favourite channels to the 800's. Unfortunately I've had an operation on my arm and I'm unable to drive for several weeks, I have tried talking him through re installing but from what he says over the telephone he's only getting Film 4 on channel 15 and very little else. Has anyone else got that problem. All I've suggested at present is for him to make sure the TV is on BBC4 before he unplugs it and the Echostar is plugged in for receiving the OAD if there is one. Really grateful for any other suggestions. The software needs an upgrade. Echostar recently told a previous poster that there will be a further OAD in 4 to 6 weeks. So there are a couple of alternatives. He could post the box back to Echostar at the address given previously in this thread. They'll upgrade it and return it, or he could wait for the OAD. The OAD doesn't take place automatically. When it is broadcast he'll need to tune to a BBC channel and when told of availability by the on screen display, he should click the OK button to accept it. At the moment we've not been using the box because our main TV has Freeview built in, and the bedroom we're hoping to use the box in currently doesn't have an aerial connection (I'm working on it, last attempt at putting cables in left a rather large hole in the celing, although that's a different story!). Suffice to say I missed the OTA upgrade. I've e-mailed Echostar though to see if they can update the box if I send it (I'm happy to pay a couple postage if thats what it takes). If they can update it then that would be great, I can live with the split nit problem, but if they can update it, well it would make life easier (the box will eventually go in the kids room). Rob More fool those people who throw this box away. If Echostar are as good as their word about their software upgrading, be it by sending them the product direct or the proposed over air update, this box will still prove its worth. What version was the previous attempt? The playout times are the same, just the OAD details have changed. The download was successful, the channels are now correct and I get the added bonus of the 7 day TV guide:-) Great stuff Echostar, I must admit, after being able to update my 5 year old box and have it still work, I would certainly consider getting another Echostar box in the future. Rob What old version was yours updated from, do you know? What old version was yours updated from, do you know? What old version was yours updated from, do you know? It's updated to version 1.7 which may explain why your box didn't update aldaweb. Rob It's updated to version 1.7 which may explain why your box didn't update aldaweb. Rob I don't think it looks like the plus ones that already have the EPG are being targetted. I don't think it looks like the plus ones that already have the EPG are being targetted. I checked the neighbour's one today and it offered to go from 1.6.something to 1.7.11 which I accepted. The update took only a few minutes but, contrary to the Echostar instructions posted elsewhere, when the box rebooted it did not display a Welcome screen and invite a rescan. It came back up tuned in to the same channel it had been on before the update and I had to navigate the menu to start the scan. Anyone any advice please. Cheers, karen All Rights Reserved. ( October 2009 ) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message ) FTA receivers can be used in rural locations as a fairly reliable source of television without subscribing to cable or a major satellite provider. These unencrypted feeds can then be received by anyone with the proper decoder. Satellite signals are normally receivable well beyond the terrestrial station's coverage area. Enthusiasts also use FTA receivers to watch the numerous wildfeeds that are present on many of those satellites. There is no assurance that any individual FTA broadcast will remain available or that those which do remain will continue broadcast in a compatible format - in this example, such a viewer would have lost ABC and Fox in mid-2009 due to Equity's bankruptcy. Please help improve this section by adding citations to reliable sources. Unsourced material may be challenged and removed. ( October 2009 ) ( Learn how and when to remove this template message ) FTA receivers, however, lack the smartcard readers or decryption modules designed for the reception of pay-TV programming, since the receivers are designed only for reception of unencrypted transmissions.Manufacturers, importers, and distributors of FTA receivers officially do not condone this practice and some will not sell to or support individuals who they believe will be using their products for this purpose, use of third-party software usually voiding any warranties.Electronic countermeasures that disable access cards may not have the same or any effect on FTA receivers because they are not capable of being updated remotely. The firmware in receivers themselves cannot be overwritten with malicious code via satellite as provider-issued receivers are. DVB-S is an international standard and thus the industry-imposed restriction that a Bell TV receiver is not interchangeable with a Dish Network receiver (the same box) and neither are interchangeable with a GlobeCast World TV receiver (also DVB) is an artificial one created by providers and not respected by either pirates or legitimate unencrypted FTA viewers. When this happens, illegitimate viewing is disrupted. Third-party coders may release an updated altered version of the FTA receiver software on internet forums, sometimes hours to days after the countermeasure is implemented, although some countermeasures have allowed the encryption to remain secure for several months or longer. The receivers, meanwhile, remain able to receive unencrypted DVB-S broadcasts and (for some HDTV models) terrestrial ATSC programming. The same is not true of standard subscription TV receivers, whereby unsubscribing from a pay-TV package causes loss of all channels. While this approach is used by most providers, deployments tend to be slowed due to cost. Most such firmware is distributed freely on the Internet. Websites that third-party coders use to share this software often have anywhere from 50,000 to over 200,000 registered users. This is accomplished by an Ethernet cable hooked to the receiver that allows updated decryption keys to be fed to the unit directly from the internet.
