Echo string trimmers with two-cycle engines require a mixture of gasoline and oil to keep the engine lubricated while it's running. Mixing the fuel components in the proper proportions is essential. If the mix ratio is oil-rich, the engine performs poorly; and if the mix is oil-lean, the engine can seize. Acceptable Gas and Oil In order to prevent engine problems, Echo recommends using 89 Octane gas, which is the middle dispenser on most self-service gas pumps. The gas should contain a maximum of 10 percent ethanol. Because ethanol burns hotter than gasoline, however, it's best to avoid ethanol additives altogether. Any standard two-cycle motor oil is acceptable, and Echo markets Power BlendX, which it recommends for all the engines it manufactures. Mixing Ratio If you use Power BlendX oil -- or an equivalent product -- mixing it with gasoline at a ratio of 50 parts gasoline to 1 part oil is acceptable for any Echo product, even if the manual specifies a different mixing ratio. To achieve this ratio, add 2.6 ounces of oil to each gallon of gasoline. Agitate the mixture well before using it. Many larger four-cycle gasoline engines, such as in your car, have separate reservoirs for the fuel and the motor oil. You top off the fuel tank whenever it gets low and top off the oil reservoir when it gets low. Your Echo string trimmer's engine is an example. Yet the engine still needs that lubrication to function smoothly and avoid overheating. In these 2-cycle air-cooled engines, a specialty form of motor oil is added directly to the gasoline in specific ratios. This provides for both combustion and lubrication. This blend is known as a mixed fuel. According to a fuel information sheet available on the Echo-USA website, the fuel must be 89 octane or better, and contain no more than 10 percent ethanol. These requirements ensure that the mixed fuel burns correctly within the engine, and contains enough detergents to keep the engine and carburetor free of varnish buildup. The oil must have L-EGD certification from the International Standards Organization, which is listed on the oil label as ISO-L-EGD.http://flaviaflores.com/images/car-pro-xt35-manual.pdf Secondly, the oil must also have M345 FD certification from the Japanese Automobile Standards Organization, which is listed on the oil label as JASO M345 FD. These standards ensure that the oil is suitable for air-cooled, 2-cycle engines which operate at very high speeds and temperatures, such as in a string trimmer. Other types of motor oil are not formulated to meet these performance criteria. Any oil which does not meet these criteria can void the Echo warranty. However, the company now specifies a 50:1 ratio for all their 2-cycle, air cooled engines, even if the original equipment manuals specified a different ratio. Echo states that improvements in oil formulations allow for this new 50:1 ratio for all their equipment. Most Echo line trimmer fuel tanks are quite a bit smaller than one gallon in size. Trying to calculate the amount of oil to add to such a small fuel tank may result in errors. By blending the fuel and oil in a separate storage can, you can measure out exact and convenient quantities of both fuel and oil. Simply fill the fuel container with half a gallon of fuel, add the oil and mix. Add another half gallon of fuel, mix again, and you're done. Be sure to completely use up the fuel in the storage container prior to refilling, such that old fuel does not mix with new fuel. Then each time you refill the fuel storage container, add another batch of oil. Always slosh the fuel around right after mixing in the oil, and again right before adding it to your string trimmer's tank. Make sure the bolts on the engine are tight, the spark plug is tight and the ignition coil bolts are as well. You will need to remove the engine covers to inspect and tighten all the above. I sure it is probably the coil with my luck. Gas with ethanol can stiffen the parts in the carb. To fix it, you will need to remove it, disassemble it and clean it. Use NO harsh solvents on it, do not soak it in parts washer or carb cleaner, and use NO high psi compressed air on it. I have put on a new carb.Also, how OLD is it. After considering your problem with this Echo, I am leaning a little towards a possible air leak somewhere? Air could leak at the cylinder base gasket or the crankshaft seals. Many folks have had problems with these types of carburetors. The PRIMARY complaint is that the machine falls on it's face when running wide open. Most feel the settings on them from the factory are way TOO lean (not enough fuel). You possibly are getting a part of that with your LEAN idle condition. Not unusual for these carburetors. I would like to refer you to the ZAMA site to take a look at the service procedures recommended for these carburetors just so you can recheck your work. They are found in the ZAMA tech guide pdf.Does this have to be replaced to create a vacuum? There should never be a vacuum in the tank. The fuel cap is vented to keep that from happening. If the grommet shrunk up and no longer fits, I suggest you install a new fuel kit, complete with the grommet, filter, the three lines and vent cap. Your no start problem may be fuel related. Check inside the tank to see if the main fuel line broke off of the filter. If it has, the fuel line will float up and not draw fuel correctly.You will have to eliminate items one by one to determine the no start cause. Does it have spark? Test it. Could it be the rings.
