Both were on timers to restrict use to a few minutes at a time (10) to avoid draining the battery excessively when operated with the engine off, but made excellent supplements to the main heater underway. Mike, Moderator posted 05-09-2001 06:03 PM You have the auxiliary furnace supplied as an accessory for the air-cooled VW's of that era. Look in your Bentley shop manual page 82.2 - 82.11. The green knob is the giveaway -- the regular heater is controled just by the slide levers. You can run the auxiliary independent of the engine, or use it as a supplemental when the engine is running. They were really very good. The are fueled from the main gas tank. The working of the knob is a little complex. You push it in and turn it to the right to set the timer (Max 10 minutes) when you are using it independent of the engine.http://gbb.global/blog/boss-1600-recorder-manual Then turn the knob without pushing in to the right to set the temperature. This will also set it for when the engine is running. If you are smelling something hot or burning it could be from many sources. The furnace draws air from outside and pumps it through the heat exhanger and into the ductwork. The furnace draws other air from outside to feed the fire and it exhausts out the little exhaust pipe on the side. The heated air does not come in direct contact with the combustion air. Unless... you could have a leak. It's also possible you are picking up odors from the main engine heat exhangers in the exhaust system since that air is also piped into the same system. Try running the heat by levers only, no auxiliary. If no smell, the problem is probably the auxiliary. The popping sound may indicate combustion problems. Initially, you should hear clicking from the auxiliary heater's fuel pump. When you first turn it on, the glow plug begins to heat. After a few minutes, the relay will kick in the fuel and you should hear a whoosh as it starts and then a steady small roar. The fans should then be running. Popping sounds like you may be getting improper burn and it's lighting off, dying and relighting. That could be caused by fuel supply, ignition or air leak defects. In simplest form, it functions like the industrial heaters you see that look like a jet engine. Read the Bentley and also check my pics site (linked from the home page) under the Technical Diagrams folder for a set of Type II heater wiring and troubleshooting charts. The heater in the air-cooled Vanagons was very similar. I have removed the Eberspacher BN4 from my '71 Westy (newly purchased) and need to bench test everything. Has anyone done this. I have an '82 vanagon with this heater located below a storage compartment that is below the sink.Fact is, the entire layout of my camper is not consistent with what the manual tells and shows.My poptop raises on all four corners vs.Anything you might be able to say about this would be welcome as well. Your diagrams show the AFC version as per the Vanagon Manual, the B2L is completely separate from the vehicle hot air tubing, feeding out under the rear seat. (I stock and sell the RB manuals in the UK so no problem there.) Yes it is a factory fitting, I've got the ETKA CD with the details, the main unit part number is 255 070 513, listed in the Campmobile extras section. Maybe it was only for Europe or at least not the US. Always worth asking though. Thanks for the ideas, I'll keep trying. Rod Sleigh When I turn it on the combustion air blower kicks on, the fresh air fan kicks on, but the fuel pump does not. What I have checked: -Checked the fuel pump by connecting a 12V battery directly to the fuel pump leads. The pump clicks every time I make the connection. Pump is good. -Checked the wires that plug into the fuel pump for signal. I get a constant signal of 3V when the system is on, and 0V when off. I think this points to a problem with the points in the combustion blower. When the points are closed the fuel pump gets a signal to go. When the points are open, the fuel pump does not get a signal. Mine seem to be stuck somewhere between open and closed (hence the constant 3V signal). Bentley does not describe how to check the points. Does anyone out there know how to check out the points.I would be very appreciative if you could advise the outcome. Kind regards Richard The trouble-shooting chart indicates some voltages of about 3v are correct, but this is in the middle of a step-by-step troubleshooting sequence. As I understand it, the combustion air blower directs the pump to to inject fuel every 33rd revolution of the blower shaft. Of course there are a dozen other 'interconnected' features that must be correct also, such as temperature sensor, coil, temp regulator, o'heat swtich, etc. Thus why I say it's a sequence step-by-step troubleshooting procedure. The manual that's in, Repair Manual Type 2 is out of print but is included in the comprehensive manual set on Bentley's CD-ROM version.I just bought two similar webasto heaters on e-bay (out of a M-benz) and am going to try to make one work and install it in my syncro. I have a friend who has a BBW46 in his syncro so I can study it up close. Since I rountinely park at -30 with no 110vts around, the idea of pre-heat is nice. Also the idea of a heater timer for those cold camping mornings is kind of cool as well. (I have a catalytic heater, but I won't sleep with it going) I'll post some info if I get it all to work. Webasto sells a number of new coolant and warm air heaters now. It seems that they are becoming popular in some new luxery cars. Thier website is not very good, and finding technical info from them is hard. I may be in need of a control unit for mine, although testing method is hard to find. After sending dozens of e-mails to reps all over N.America, I finaly got a response from Harold at They are north american dist.If you are buying a heater make sure that you are not buying a pig in a poke. Also be aware that parts for the gasoline version are getting hard to find(and expensive). Diesel parts somewhat less rare, as there are a lot of them on boats. You can see how quickly it can add up. After much futzing around with the wiring diagram and the volt meter, I have been able to get mine to run. It goes through all it's cycles. I have to wait to fire it until I get a new fuel mat. Word to the wise, don't take the cover off the fuel mat unless you are sure it won't fire for some other reason. I took mine apart and didn't need to and wrecked the mat. I am still having some wiring problem with the timer unit. If anyone has any info I would appreciate it. Icarus After a bunch of false starts I have gotten my bbw46 to fire. Set up on the bench with a old heater core, some heater hose and a 12vt battery, away it goes. Lights with a poof and boy does the water get hot in a hurry. I have learned a hell of a lot about webastos in general and bbw46. I also have two wp1024 out of a Benz gwagon that I have also got to work (On the block if anyone is interested) I still have a problem with the bbw46 control unit.I am waiting for my electronic genuis to diagnose my control unit. Unfortuatly webasto can't supply me with a schematic for it so he will have to work in the dark. The biggest thing I have learned about these heaters is that they have to be run fairly often to keep them healthy, once a week is recomended. I think that they are very good units, and will be a slick cabin heating system when complete,(I can't wait to wake up, below freezing outside, timer clicks on and were warm before we get out of bed) but beware, getting a used unit will take a fair bit of effort. I'm still into this only a few buck, but a lot of time. If I ever get it fully up to snuff and installed I'll update. Therefore all the instruction manuals are in German. It has a rear heater which does not run off the cooling system but off the fuel system. It has a combustion chamber under the sliding side door. My plea is for a copy of the operating instructions.preferably in English.or alternateively if someone could advise me Eg: The heater only seems to fire up if the engine is running but when lit it stays on after the engine has been switched off, but only for a max of 10 mins. The bbw 46 heats the coolant through both heater cores and also pre-heats the engine. The time can be used to turn it on at a pre-determined time.
