A technician at ACS told us that “There is a capacitor on the circuit board that stabilizes energy flow. An abnormal increase in voltage can cause this capacitor to blow, leaking acid onto the circuit board and destroying the traces. The most common reason for a blown capacitor is improper jump starting or charging.” 2003 BMW 325i with complete failure of the instrument cluster Diagnosing a BMW E46 instrument cluster failure A blown capacitor in your E46 instrument cluster leaves behind some telltale signs. The entire instrument cluster will “go dark”, meaning no lights or gauges will spring to life when the key is turned on (except for the ABS and “sometimes” the seatbelt lights). If all of your fuses are intact and your multimeter shows 12 volts at each fuse, then you have an internal circuit board failure in your instrument cluster. If either the instrument cluster or light control module has to be replaced, the data is taken from the remaining. If a light stays on or comes on while driving, take note.
