I haven't done much work on cars yet but I do have a lot of experience with motorcyles, including engine rebuilds. But they are a whole lot simpler, much less computers and probably a lot more interchangeable parts. I haven't decided if I'm going to tackle this myself or have a shop do it btw. The problem with doing modern automatic transmission swaps, especially DCT, is not mechanically making them fit, it's entirely in the controllers and integration. Modern automatic transmissions, especially performance zones, are sophisticated computer-controlled components of the modern automotive electrical and communication system. If you want a DCT to actually work, you don't just need to connect up the flappy paddles. You have to fully integrate the transmission controller with the engine computer in order to rev match for fast shifts and ensure safe performance and functioning. I decided to quit that route after producing a couple of wonderful blood blisters with the channelocks. It has kept me motivated to keep this project going. So far I have been able to install the manual pedals. True to the comments, the bolt under the steering was a true nightmare to get out. The car was well-maintained and the instrument is digital and I was unable to determine the mileage. From the looks of the car, it appeared to be low miles as the interior was well maintained. The original transmission that was equipped in cars in the early 80's was found to be unreliable. In 1985, BMW went back to the 265 transmission while they redesigned this transmission. This transmission is very reliable and a good choice when the 265 is not available. Which is the transmission that everyone wants. This transmission is shorter than the 265. Transmission is in good shape. It shifts smoothly through all the gears. I drained the fluid and it was a nice color, free of dirt. The magnetic drain plug had a little “peach fuzz” on it, with no metal fragments. Includes the shift linkage, and stick. Also includes the aluminum transmission support bracket and the shift fork. DRIVE SHAFT The drive shaft looks good, the center joint and rear universal joint look and feel good. There is “scoring” on the drive shaft and this resulted from heat shields loosening and rubbing on the drive shaft. This is a cosmetic issue only. I did not bother removing it or the clutch, as it is my experience that no one wants it. I am providing a single mass flywheel from a 1985 535i with the appropriate reference pin for the Motronic 1.0 fuel system. Your fuel injection system does not require it. I believe I am including all of the parts required to convert the pedal set. Only the parts shown in the photo are included. The clutch lines are not included. Your brake fluid reservoir from the automatic has a fitting for conversion to manual transmission which requires a simple cut and the addition of a flexible hose leading to the clutch master cylinder. I am also not including the clutch master or slave cylinder, as it is my experience that these items have a high failure rate after sitting. INSTRUMENT CLUSTER The E34 does not have an “Automatic” cluster or a “Manual” cluster. BMW uses a small blue “chip” to convert the cluster from automatic to manual, which I am including in the sale.
