It was as if the Dyson went UNDER the carpet and picked up everything from underneath. Someone complained earlier that the Dyson canister was too small and had to empty it several times during the job, but this is imho evidence that Dyson picks up far more than your regular vacuum. As soon as I took my Dyson from the box, immediately, the difference was obvious.http://schlammatlas.de/en/node/20929 It looks tighter, feels tighter and sturdy, and the extra few hundred dollars are obvious. It is like having a steak at Sizzler's and then having a steak at Mastro's in Beverly Hills, the difference begins with the ambience and as soon as you enter the neighborhood, you begin to see the difference (in this case, even my Dyson box looked far more sophisticated). I have used a Dyson before, one imported from Germany (a canister Dyson) which we purchased while traveling. We loved it, and it was very practical and it did very well. Nevertheless, I must admit that the DC17 has amazing suction power compared to my old Dyson. I can't attest as to the difference between the CD17 versus any of the uprights imported into the U.S., but having owned a very old Dyson before they were brought into the U.S. market, I can honestly say that Dyson does improve its products when they release new models -- unlike some tech products for which the improvement is almost unnoticeable. Hence, a DC17 is probably a good upgrade, if you've been using a very old Dyson. As far as how long they last, I can't comment because I just got my Dyson. However, the old one (which was kept by my ex and still uses) has lasted more than eight years without a blink. It did not loose suction during the five years I've used it, never broke, never gave us any trouble or grief, and this is an understatement considering that it is ME who used it -- I am INFAMOUS in making anything last, I'm phenomenally good at breaking anything I own (gone through watches after watches, five iPods, two vacuums, a treadmill, etc., you get the idea). The instructions that come with the Dyson are bad, I admit. This may be partly due to the fact that it is made by engineers, not fancy writers, and it is marketted worldwide to a very large audience. However, the pictures are not that difficult to figure out, if you have at least half a brain; besides, I never really read instructions anyway, does anyone else.https://difumarket.com/images/canon-mp41dhii-manual.pdf The cord is long, as mentioned by other reviewers. The Dyson is not as wide and as ignorantly large as my Hoover -- if put side by side, my Hoover is unnecessarily and obviously much larger than my Dyson. Perhaps it is the way they designed the Dyson that they didn't provide an easier way to manage the cord, but who am I to complain when my Hoover's got the EXACT same problem. The cord is in the back and must be manually coiled unto the handle. However, the only reason why this is more of an inconvenience than with my Hoover, is that in order to pull out and use the extending arm, is by uncoiling the entire power cord first. Moreover, unlike my Hoover, when my Dyson is parked, it stops sucking from the upright and the suction automatically switches over to the extension arm. Neat feature you won't see in any other vacuum. Lastly, it is easy to measure the suction of your Dyson compared to any other vacuum. Notice the amount and power of air coming out of the vacuum while it starts to suction. On my Hoover, I could hardly feel the amount of air coming out, air that made me sneeze, but on my Dyson, it literally blows every piece of paper nearby (is THAT powerful), and you can literally breathe in the air coming out, is so clean. I can't imagine all the dusty and contaminated air coming out of any old Hoover near children, especially babies. The Dyson is worth its price and the quality of the product that you'll receive will be apparent once you open the box. We have a housekeeper who drags the monster vacuum around, and I know that when I'm not looking she bumps it left and right, and I wouldn't be surprised if it was thrown around when I wasn't home. Guess what? Not even a dent in that monster of a machine. I recently took a disinfecting wipe and cleaned it, and now it looks like I just took it out of the box. The cords is still a pain in the rear, but as I've mentioned, three years ago, my Hoover had the same problem. Hope you're enjoying your vacuum, I'm just glad I didn't have to buy two more between now and then. A written manual including photos would be much welcome. The illustrations that Dyson include are not good enough. 2. When you use the vacuum on a good quality wool rug it's going to remove too much of the rug's pile and eventually destroy the rug. This will happen quickly because it picks up so much of the actual rug in addition to any pet fur and dirt. 3. Whoever designed this product is an idiot (I know this is a third thing to know). Also, if you order accessories or the vacuum itself directly from Dyson in the USA your order is processed through England and you're charged a bank fee for processing the order which sucks (like this product). Please try again later. From the United StatesSo we took the test, after my Hoover broke, and we both vacuumed our place with our old vacuums and then vacuumed the same area with our new Dyson. Dee 5.0 out of 5 stars I loooove my dyson, I will never own another vacuum from another company again. It takes some time to get used to the hose, it can be a bit stiff, and some of the attachments are hard to maneuver, but all in all it is a wonderful product. You do have to be careful not to get the hose near any part of your body because it will suck your bones out with the powerful suction. We have 3 dogs and a cat, so keeping up with pet hair is a chore, but the Dyson makes quick work of cleaning up. I have wood floors and some area rugs, and have not had an issue with going from one floor type to another. Most other vacuums spit the pet hair out the back of the vacuum, but the Dyson picks up every hair. I was also able to vacuum off the entire set of stairs without hauling the vacuum up each step while doing a balancing act that a circus performer would be jealous of. The Dyson is also much quieter than the other vacuums I have owned, I can actually hear when my kids interrupt me when I'm cleaning.I guess that could be listed as the one downside of the product. Please try again later. Found a replacement belt and the vacuum is working like new. Pros: No bag to change. Does a tremendous job of removing dirt, debris and pet hair from carpet and furniture. Still functions just as well today as it did brand new. Comes with several attachments. The hose on the attachment wand is still very inflexible and is heavy. Emptying the canister can be messy if you do not have any means to empty outside. Hard floor surface attachment did not function well for me. Would not remain adjusted. I use my DC17 to vacuum carpets, vinyl and hardwood floors. I use the attachment to clean hard to reach places on the floor, walls and ceilings. When it comes time to replace this vacuum, I will definitely look to get another Dyson model. Please try again later. Please try again later. Dominique 5.0 out of 5 stars I have never owned a vacuum quite as wonderful as this one. At the time of purchase, we had a German Shepard shedding globs of fur everywhere. There was never a day that went by without running the vacuum. This machine has been run almost daily for 2 years to keep up with 6 kids and 2 dogs (on a white carpet), and it still works as great as it did when I took it out of the box. I have called the Customer Service line 2 times since 2008--once last year for a worn out fan belt and once this year for the same reason--both experiences with the Representatives were extremely positive. The woman who helped me today asked about the filter, and a couple of questions later verified that my vacuum needed a new cyclone part. So, within a 5-minute phone call (they already had me on file from the previous call), I have new parts being sent directly to my doorstep, and there has never been any talk of money or payment. Just like that. I LOVE this vacuum and more importantly, I love the Dyson company because of its fabulous Customer Service. I am a repeat customer for life! Please try again later. Please try again later. Jeffrey 4.0 out of 5 stars Spent a lot of money on this, and it works, but it could have been better with some design tweaks. Positives: - Good suction. I guess I was hoping for black hole level power, but for a vacuum, not bad. Certainly the best suction I've seen in a vacuum. Then again I don't spend my days seeking out vacuums by their suction power. Keep it in the living room and have the neighbors over to gawk at it! - Mini rotary brush does OK job - Some users say the unit is heavy. I think it's fine. Negatives: - Cost. Break out your gold AMEX for this one. Sell blood. It ain't cheap. No wonder Mr. Dyson's net worth is north of 1 billion pounds. - Main brush area always stays on the floor. If you clip the corner of a rug, with a normal vacuum you can tilt the base back until the brushes rise up off the ground. This model's pivot doesn't let you do that. Ideally I'd like a large solid hook where I can casually drape the cord if I want to, or if I choose, carefully wrap the cord back between the top and bottom anchor points. - Connection to the animal hair mini rotary brush accessory is marginal. You jam the hose into the brush and hope it stays. Seems like they took the brush from another Dyson model and didn't redesign the connector to properly work with this unit. There's a small foam gasket that can fall out. If you lose the gasket, you lose all suction power. Please try again later. Please try again later. David S. 5.0 out of 5 stars She vacuums our carpeted rooms every day, and had done so that morning before this was delivered. After assembly, she gave it a try. Wow!!! We could not believe how much of our Golden Retriever's hair was still in the carpets. This is a very powerful machine. The machine is heavy, and isn't something you'd want to trot up and down stairs with all the time, but this isn't significant to us. Once you see how easy the machine works, it's really a non-issue.Please try again later. Please try again later. Topher 5.0 out of 5 stars I would get excited to get a vacuum cleaner but when it showed up on my doorstep I tore into the box like a kid on Christmas day. The instructions on putting the Dyson together and using it are basically pictures and based on that I was able to get it put together quickly (it's easier than it looks really). However it would be better if they also provided text instructions to go along with the pictures. When I plugged it in and started moving it across my carpet I started seeing dirt, almost powder like in the container and I had only moved it a foot or so. I was amazed as I finished vacuuming my living room and saw the container continue to fill up. I thought my carpets were fairly clean. I always vaccumed the house at least 2 times a week with a Fantom but the Dyson showed me while my carpets might look clean, they were anything but. It was gross to actually see how much dirt, pollen and whatever else it picked up had been ground down in my carpet for no telling how long. I have used all the attachements and found all of them to be really useful. Since I have 2 cats and a dog the small turbine is great for my furniture and gets up most off the pet hair. One of the other attachment has been perfect when needing I need to get under the couch, bed, etc. And of course the telescopic wand provides gets the baseboards and all those other hard to reach areas. Bottom line is every time I vacuum my carpet looks brand new and I am always amazed at what it picks up each and every week. I used my Amazon credit credit card to pay for everything for a year (yes, I paid it off each month) and accrued enough gift certificates to get my Dyson for free. If it wasn't for that I may still be sitting around debating about getting one. At any rate you will not be disappointed with this Dyson! Please try again later. Please try again later. amber 4.0 out of 5 stars It does appear to have strong suction. Does it really suck up more than other vacuums? Who knows. I do like the way it handles. It's easy to push around (I tried the Sears Performance rated highly by Consumer Reports but it was very heavy and difficult to maneuver), and to empty the canister is a simple push of the button. There is a lack of instructions. Basic instructions come with the vacuum, but I am technically inept so need detailed, easy to follow instuctions. There is a picture for the various attachments but nothing to say what each is for. I have bare floors with area rugs, and as far as I can tell, when you go to the bare floor mode, the vacuum doesn't pick up anything-whether it's on bare floor or carpet. My other vacuum didn't either. Is a Dyson of any kind worth the extra money. I researched vacuums for days, and while I can't say it's worth two to three times what you would pay for another brand, I am not sorry I spent the extra money. I have 5 dogs and had to clean or change the filters all the time on my old vacuum. Since the Dyson's are filterless, that alone was worth the extra money to me.Please try again later. Please try again later. tentoes 5.0 out of 5 stars Our carpets are old, but we do in fact still have to live on these carpets. I was absolutely appalled at how much junk and dirt this vacuum got out of the carpets that my old (cheapie) vacuum didn't! After just doing the living room, the canister was full!! And the amazing thing was that the carpet actually LOOKED so much more brighter. It was actually CLEAN. I love this vacuum so much that I'm vacuuming the apartment almost every day just for the fun of it. For a short person like me, it's nice to not have to pull out the step-stool to be able to reach the ceiling. The very long cord also allows me to plug it on at one power outlet, and I can vacuum the entire apartment all at once. If you're worried about the price tag, it's well worth every penny! Please try again later. Please try again later. C. J. RHEA 5.0 out of 5 stars I have also used a DC14 Animal, but disliked some of the design (e.g., the tools can fall off when you dump the dust). The DC17 re-engineered all of the things I found flawed with the DC14. If you've never tried a Dyson, find someone who owns one and try it. I've had a commercial Electrolux for years and though it was a good machine-- both the Dyson DC14 and DC17 put it to shame. From my perspective, there are only two drawbacks-- First: price. Considering it's mostly plastic, it's hard to swallow the price tag. Second: the size of the dust container. Since it does such a good job of picking up everything, the dust container fills quickly. Emptying it can get annoying if you haven't cleaned in a while. I have several dogs and this machine does exactly what it advertises-- the amount of dust, hair and dander it picks up is simply amazing! Please try again later. Please try again later. Consumer comments indicate that it does indeed work very well on removing pet hair from most surfaces. It can be a bit heavy for some folks however. Ratings are all quite good for this machine as can be seen in the table below: Its 12 amp motor generates 220 air watts of power and it also uses Dyson?s Level 3 Root Cyclone technology. Root Cyclone technology applies centrifugal force to spin dirt out of the air and, as claimed by Dyson, ensures that the vacuum does not lose suction or clog. In the case of the DC17, Dyson engineers have combined Root Cyclone technology with a core separator. This separator is an extra cyclonic stage between the outer and inner cyclones. This extra stage helps to separate out particles as small as 0.5 microns from the airflow. Dyson call this ?Level 3 Root Cyclone technology. The ability to turn the brushbar off is useful when transitioning from carpet to other more delicate flooring (like some hardwood floors or delicate rugs). HEPA filtration captures 99.97 of particles 0.3 microns in diameter or larger. This level of filtration is useful for those suffering from allergies or asthma. The DC17 also comes with a washable pre-motor filter. Some consumers like bagged machines while others feel that a bagless vacuum saves money and is more environmentally friendly. The dirt canister on the DC17 is clear plastic so you can see how full it is and it is also ?bottom empty?. Consumers do indicate that it is fairly easy to empty. It is also quite large having a capacity of 0.63 gallons. It is quite heavy for an upright at 20.8 lbs and could be a chore for some to lug up or down stairs. It does however have a very long 35 foot power cord which allows one to move from room to room without having to find a new outlet all the time. A carpet cleaning kit that includes Zorb powder (for absorbing dirt from carpets) and Dyzolve spray (for removing spills and marks) is also provided with the DC17.
