The air quality standards were developed years ago when the only affordable way to measure fine airborne dust was to run air through a fine filter then weigh how much the collected dust weighs. That actually poses two problems, there are lots of different standards so we have to decide on which to compare to, and then we need to do the translation. For users of air quality monitors that display their readings only in particles per volume, this necessity is problematic since no mathematical formula can quantify counts to mass. Despite this obstacle, it is still possible to estimate the mass of particulates using the Dylos DC1100 Pro monitor. This ability is not built into the monitor but it can easily and quickly be calculated by the user.Because of this, monitoring PM2.5 in air is extremely important and can be accomplished with the DC1100 Pro monitor. The DC1100 Pro has two data channels that measure and quantify particulate matter. Each channel has a specific range of particle sizes that are reported within it.The result of the large channel estimate is then added to the PM2.5 estimate which results in a total PM value.In most cases a separation of one to several feet should be sufficient to prevent any interference. Be aware that particulate concentrations can vary dramatically from one location to another within the same house.Periodically cleaning with compressed air (especially when used in a dusty environment) can improve the accuracy of the monitor's readings. The monitor should also be covered to help prevent the accumulation of dust or dirt when it's not in use.The monitor creates its own air flow by the use of an axial fan (Fig. 3). It's also disappointing that a device of this quality does not include an inexpensive WiFi module for detailed data analysis on a computer. Even their models with PC connectivity use a serial port, which is ridiculous in 2019. Finally, Dylos' battery model is insanely overpriced. Battery operation should be included on all their devices. They are horrible. I've used a few of them alongside the Dylos, and they are toys by comparison. If Dylos updated their UI and added some basic 2019 features like WiFi and battery operation, they'd tap into a much larger market. Their product is fundamentally and technically sound, it just needs a major facelift.I have severe allergies and have spent quite a bit on air purification as well as making quite an effort to keep things clean and keep outside air out. In the past I had been doing all this blind and taking everything on faith, and tons of research, that it was all working properly but now I TRULY know what is working and what is not. I live in downtown LA and knew it was bad but had no idea how bad. Now I keep my windows closed at all times. After quite a bit of research I bought the IQAir plus system which is truly far and away the best you can get and the proof is in the second picture showing my interior air now at 67 and 2. I also find it amazing how some of the smallest things affect the air quality since the Dylos is running all the time. Doing laundry, cooking, cleaning and even turning on the AC affect the particle counts.All and all fantastic unit.It's already paid for itself. Over the last few weeks I've developed a very bad cough due to furnace and dust in my home. Was working at home but decided due to cough I better work at my normal place of work. However cough not getting any better. So as soon as I got the device I started testing it. First office had a reading of about 1000 - that's only fair almost poor. The next room had a reading of around 1100 that's poor according to the chart on the monitor. Another room had 700 - not too bad. Fair. My office. 6000-8000 - very poor air quality starts at 3000. Also had ordered a honeywell hpa 300 which came at same time. So turned that on and within 2 hours office reading stayed well below 75 -- which is excellent air quality. Really had no thought that air in office was that bad. Cough feels better already although probably too early to be sure. Absolute accuracy here is not that important as long as you can feel confident in relative accuracy. Starting reading about 1000, went down to 700 with air purifier on and stayed there. Yesterday it went as low as 30 with purifier running. Then I remembered criticism in prior posts that aerosols and humidity would affect. This morning was running an essential oil vaporizer. As soon as I turned that off readings went down to around 100. After turning off humidifier monitor went to as low as 30. Also the initial high reading was probably some dust that got kicked by the machine. Now starting reading is around a 1000.When that happens, I close all the windows and can verify that the indoor air quality is actually better than the outdoor air quality. HOWEVER, unit is affected by humidity in the air, so if there is a difference between indoor and outdoor humidity, results are not accurate. Large fluctuations in humidity will skew the results as the unit does not distinguish between water droplets and dust.Just wish it was possible to get more about particle information. They should update the display technology and provide graphics capability, no need for PC connections nowadays. Such that if the device is placed in a certain location, plugged in and monitors the environment, this data could be hand recorded for an uninterrupted sample over some duration based on preferences. Be sure to download the product manual from the Dylos company website to understand how this sampling process and storing of values actually occurs because this simpler approach may be preferable to a computer connection if not extensively using this data-logging feature if involving only small amounts of previous data for small experiments, where a menu search could provide recorded particle counts (higher and lower) and then be deleted afterwords and restart this process per air quality evaluation. So if like me you do not have an idea of how the device operates as a data-logger, it may be a surprise what it requires in order to gather data and the non-computer version may be preferable in many cases, and if a timestamp is required with an internal clock, then the battery version is going to allow that additional information to verify the context. What the computer connection does allow is live monitoring which then would be timestamped when connected to a computer, though also, which could be used for experimentation, such as an environment without cigarette smoke and then infused with smoke from external sources, or dust or pollution levels that vary with the time of day, as this could be mapped or better understood with this diagnostic tool. Another potential is to connect the various Dylos PC-version to a microcontroller and use the data generated in a larger connected context for data-logging environmental variables, so the serial port offers some future expanded use or extension as a data gathering tool, as a possibility for those who may want to experiment further or go beyond the limits of existing device operation. It is not difficult to imagine the increased usefulness of such information when expanded into other realms of air quality monitoring. The device itself is well design and of high quality. The display screen is as nice as I have ever seen, as it has a softness and simple information that are an effective presentation of the data. The hardware interface is likewise well thought out if not elegant. There are only three buttons: power, mode, select. The downside is the software which is only rudimentary, it performs its function though also appears burdened by its task, as if a herculean task to get a tiny data sample from the air quality monitor to a computer and then rendering it, where it can then be downloaded (the 'history' or stored memory) and then displayed as a graph on a time-line, with or without precise timestamp. If data is displayed as a graph and the graph type is changed, the software can go entirely blank. Likewise, the very tiny data sent from the device to the computer causes the software interface to blink various aspects as if under heavy load, which just makes the software (and associated data) appear fragile and potentially crashable due to such flickering visual instability. It seems unlikely the Dylos will advance further in its conception and functionality without reconsidering the approach to internal and external software involved with the device, because it seems the limitations are most realized in the Dylos Logger where it is underperforming in terms of a larger design approach, which then could negatively influence or put a ceiling of future goals or functionality.
