The DXtreme DX-300 is an affordable HD 1080p media player, combined with a 1x Dxtreme DX-300 PVR HD. I've lost half my night watching the COTD sale and trying to find out more. I have an ageing MythTV setup that I've been looking to upgrade for a while, so would love to hear your experiences once you get these units. Here are a few questions, pleeeease. How is the interface and remote. Quick or laggy? Can you tell if it does automatic deletion, or does it seem its up to you to delete things manually as it gets full. Does it turn on and record if you switch it off to standby. How do you record the same show each week. Is the only way via a weekly repetition in the same timeslot. Features in MythTV I'll miss if I get one of these are text searching for upcoming shows, recording a show by name at any time the name is seen in guide data, the quality of the program guide from the sheppard grabber, and a pretty good interface that's been solid for 5 years. But my box is noisy, getting old and crashes occasionally which results in no recordings until I notice a day or two later it's completely locked up. I love the idea of this latest gen of combined media player with PVR and NAS almost seals the deal over TiVo. It's online guide data and advanced searching and recording by title rather than time that puts TiVo in front, given my love of MythTV for the last few years. The DX will record 2 programs at once. To set the record, and remember I am still learning as well. Immediate recording, press the record on the remote. If you use EPG then again press the record, that gives a display at the top of the TV screen with new schedule set. That all it gives. Press the record a 2nd time and it cancels. Scheduled recording is easier. At least it is easier to understand initially. Press the menu button, then arrow to Time Rec. At that point you set up a new time to record. The nice part here is that in the day, there are the 7 days, Mon-Fri, Mon-Sat. I am still getting used to this, but so far it seems OK. In the setup you can specify if you want to record SD or HD. Your fun part is when you want to playback. Took a day to work this one as it doesn't seem to be in the docs. Again, press menu. Arrow to browse. Then select the HDD then go to the REC option, and you will find your programs in there. There must be some philosophy in how the menus are set up etc, but at the moment I am struggling to work it out. I think that its going to be a matter of usage and get used to it. Any comments on the usability of the DX-380. I was up and running, watching and recording TV and connected to computers on my wireless LAN within an hour. TV channnel scan and setup was excellent (better than the native Samsung one). Recorded program quality is perfect. Very impressed. Doesn't come with HDMI cable though. The remote is not completely intuitive, but easy to get used to. Seems to replace the existing TV remote quite well for everyday use. I struggle to see what all the hype is about. These Realtek units are packed with features, however they are not the worlds best PVR by any means. They record in TS file format and no they do not record the program name to file (yet). None of the Realtek based chipset units do except for the DVICO units. There should be a number of functional improvements when this happens including correct file naming. I've held by breath for things like this before though and nearly starved myself of oxygen. Lastly, even if they do release a 'stable' version of SDK 4 for these units soon, I would not expect they iron out all of the bugs for at least a few months after that. If you are after a cheap Realtek based unit. Have a look at the HiMedia. Same (if not better) features as this without the price tag. DXtreme DX-380 Review I bought this media centre to replace an ageing MythTV setup, so my needs and expectations of a media centre are pretty high. So in short, I was replacing an advanced PVR with web interface, high quality guide data, advanced recording via title search with season pass options. My reasons for upgrading were to replace the noisy and energy consuming old PC that is becoming a bit of an eyesaw and headache, as well as knowing I’ve not been game enough to actually upgrade past a completely dead version of Ubuntu and far outdated packages simply because the scheduling, recording and playback functions were working so well. The gloss black finish is much like any of such players, and the unit is about the size of four or five DVD cases stacked together. There is no included HDMI cable, but it does ship with power and RCA cables for a basic setup. Functional, clean and it works well. Big tick for supported media and playback. I scheduled a few recordings with different timings and expected this is where I would be disappointed. 3GPP AMR WB - restricted - Support for the playback of media encoded in the 3GP envelope, with the AMR audio codec, in Wide Band.
