The 6000 is light, and packs small, but the pedal has too much wiggle because of the lack of a solid base (like older pedals used to have). At the toe end, there is too much lateral movement (maybe because of the single chain) and feels sloppy. The single chain tends to slip out of the sprocket when you pack it. Needs a chain guard. For less than half the money get the Pearl 930, or buy the 5000 and be happy.I absolutely fly on this thing with zero resistance and nice accuracy. Back in 1977, the company's second ever product was its now legendary 5000 Series pedal. Over the years DW has introduced many more pedal ranges, mostly offering enhanced design and ever increased durability. Taking the brand into less ventured territory is the new 2000 Series of pedals - an entry level range that claims to offer DW quality at more than reasonable prices. Build The introduction of the 2000 Series pedals coincides with a rationalisation of DW's hardware lines. But DW say that there is more to the 2000s than a simple re-badging exercise. Single and double versions of the pedal are available, though not a left-sided double model. For obvious cost reasons 2000s are made in Taiwan (as indeed are a fair few of DW's pedals), but have to pass a strict quality control test before being shipped. Tracing the lineage of any DW pedal back to the first 5000 from over three decades ago is not difficult. DW's original design has proved so enduring that, while the company's premium pedals have bulked out, their lines have deviated little from the original concept. Being budget pedals, the 2000 models are slender in build and so bear an even more striking resemblance to the first 5000s. This design heritage is immediately apparent in the classic DW ovalised footplate bearing the DW logo and triangulated 0s of the series number. Similarly, the standard DW 101 dual-faced beater gives a choice of playing surfaces while also hitting the right visual note. Beneath the footplate is a steel baseplate fitted with Velcro strips and retractable spikes. With the exception of the retro-chic 6000 Series pedals, all DW pedals share the same stabilising feature. The bearing spring rocker assembly - described by DW as being similar to that found on its high-end pedals - has a scale printed on the side for judging the angle of the action. Adjusting the rake of the beater moves the footboard up or down by an equivalent amount. The footboard angle can also be altered independently by moving the chain's fixing point along a series of seven evenly-spaced holes on the cam. Based on the Accelerator AD3 drive found on 5000 Series pedals, the cam is designed for both speed and sensitivity. Hands on Not all of the elements of higher range DW pedals make it onto the 2000s, with the Delta Ball Bearing Hinge being among the omissions. Cost alone prohibited its inclusion and instead the footplates are pinned to the heelplates. Undoubtedly the most impressive feature that has been drawn down is the single post casting of the slave side of the double version of the pedal. A DW patent, the design allows for quick movement between the hi-hat and pedal and adds a look of purpose that is hard to beat. Attaching the pedals to a bass drum was straightforward as an offset hoop clamp means that they can be tightened on without having to reach under the footplate. Once underfoot, the pedals gave a smooth and fluid action. I'm not keen on a huge amount of resistance in a pedal, and the 2000s were easy to set up to my preference. Such fleet-footedness was achieved in near silence too, with little in the way of operating noise. Dialling more tension into the spring brought about a firmer feel without any loss in speed or feel. The double pedal was equally quick to respond and both sides felt in balance. Overall the pedals were positive to play; it's fair to say that they didn't feel like the most heavy duty pedals out there, but given their pricepoint that's no great surprise. Pearl P932 Demonator Check Amazon Price Check Sweetwater Price The Pearl Demonator is a single chain drive pedal from Pearl, one of the leading manufacturers that have helped set some of the industry standards for drum kit design. The Pearl Demonator features award-winning DemonDrive pedals and Is of a long-board design ideal for heel-toe double bass players. One of the most notable things about their product is the attention to detail throughout it's production. You can make a fair amount of adjustments to the settings of this double bass drum pedal to get it in prime position with tailored tension for rapid rebounds. They feature Pearls patented Click-lock spring tension keepers to prevent loosening during play and control core beaters, all renowned components from their best-loved double bass drum pedals. The removable eliminator cam enables you to play with a lighter or heavier feel. Why We Liked It - The Pearl Demonator is quite light weight but we think it is one of the best double bass drum pedals for the money as it offers high end experience for less of an expense. This Pearl Demonator double bass pedal follows on from Pearl's P930 Demonator double bass pedal. 2. DW 9000 Check Amazon Price Check Sweetwater Price Drum Workshop produce some of the finest woodwork and metalwork around and the DW 9000 is a double chain double pedal that presents a shining example of their expert craftsmanship. It is so well designed it features several separately patented parts. Most notably the adoption of a floating rotor rather than a fixed one which allows it to spin smoothly around the driveshaft. In an effort to maintain optimal alignment they also chose to place the tension springs inside the frame rather on the end of the driveshaft. The rest of the rig is subject to your infinite adjustment preferences. Interchangeable cams, a hex bolt and slide bar to fine-tune operation. Which makes for responsiveness that is pretty tough to match. It features a Tri-Pivot Toe Clamp System, EZ adjustable cam so you can quickly switch between Accelerator (shortened length of strokes) and Turbo sprockets, but there are a host of settings in between the two. They like the rest of the pedals in the series are of a lightweight construction but feature sturdy solid base plates and feel as stable as their 600 and 900 options. The Speed Cobra double pedal sports the unmistakable Cobra shape in their design resembling their originators but makes for a great new model incorporating some top-notch components that operate seamlessly. Their adjustment ability is rather limited in comparison to some double bass drum pedals we have already reviewed but this is a clear case of you get what you pay for. It offers up plenty of new adjustments to calibrate it to individual preferred performance. Pearl's Eliminator Demon Drive pedal is unparalleled direct drive you will find cheaper simpler direct drives on the market but they don't come close. Users can move the direct link and the beater stroke mechanisms closer to the batter head to increase or decrease the weight and control aggression. The adjustment features combine to produce around 8 different set ups and then you can fine tune tension length and angle to top it all off. The construction of Pearl's Eliminator is somehow lightweight despite is solid steel spines. Pearl's Eliminator boasts Japanese NiNja bearings which keep it silent during operation they are the same used for high-end skateboards and satellite telescopes. The foot-board is 'DuoDeck' so you can choose between long-board or short with some light screwing work. The beaters have shock absorbing control cores utilizing the same substance found in golf clubs. They also have the famous patented Click-Locks that keep your tension where you want it and despite having a multitude of options to mess around with you can effortlessly switch between heavy and light positioning with the turn of a key. Why We Liked It - This double bass drum pedal really sets the benchmark for direct driven drumming they are super adaptable and incorporate some advanced technology that make them remarkably precise. 5. Drum Workshop Inc. DWCP3002 Check Amazon Price Check Sweetwater Price This is another double bass pedal with an attractive price. The 3000 series from Drum Workshop is a line aimed at making their renowned, rock-solid 9000's affordable. As you are bound to notice there are a few adjustment sacrifices along the way when held in direct comparison. They have fantastic balance and there is zero lag when playing at high speeds. You can adjust just about everything you want to including distance and beater angle. It can produce thunderous breaks and eloquent flourishes. The double bass drum pedal is driven by dual chains for turbo drive and feature spring rocker bearings for the ultimate response and recovery. It is constructed of all metal and seems pretty solid. It comes with double sided beaters to give you some extra control over how punishing your playing style is. Why We Liked It - It Provides a professional level of lag-free response at half the price of it's acclaimed ancestors. 6. Pearl P2052C Eliminator CLICK HERE FOR PRICE This again is arguably one of the best selling double bass pedals on the current market. The price tag is relatively low in terms of double bass pedals for the money but it offers some unbelievably advanced technology and craftsmanship. It has interchangeable cams to also adjust the feel. The spring suspension swings freely and they are unbelievably smooth action and quiet with their universal joints. The mighty Iron Cobra 600 is a benchmark for affordable double bass pedals. It features all the necessary adjustments required to set the action to your preferred playing style whilst the options may not be as finite as you might find on more expensive models they sport a unique convertible 'Duo Glide' cam that lets you select your sweet spot between the rolling glide and power glide sprocket for a choice of smooth consistency or offset speed and power. It employs a cylindrical brass sleeve in its new hinge which helps give fluid motion change pressure and protect the hinge pin from damage, let's face it these babies are going to be put through their paces-and them some. Other notable things to mention include the para clamp which rotates with the angle of your bass drum and the high-quality ball bearing used in the new Speedo ring component preventing unwanted friction. We like the duo glide feature as it takes some of the time out of painstakingly finding where you want to be during initial set-up which can be exceptionally hard if you are a complete beginner. 8. Mapex Armory Series P800TW CLICK HERE FOR PRICE Mapex have never dominated the top of everyone's Christmas list, however, the new armory series really sees them kicking their manufacturing up a notch. Comparing an old Mapex for a new is a chalk and cheese revelation. This Mapex Armory Series P800TW is a fantastic dual chain drive double bass pedal each features a solid steel base plate retractable floor spikes for unbeatable grip. The extended footboard on the Mapex P800TW gives the impression that it is glued to your shoe from the get-go, it is covered with black powder coating with stunning green highlights. The torque-free, ball bearing, spring system mechanism is super slick providing fluid inaudible motion. The beater height and foot-board starting position can be adjusted as you see fit. The Mapex Falcon beaters (featured on the great Mapex falcon original pedal) come with interchangeable weights to control how heavily you want to add to the spring tension. All in all I makes for a dual pedal that allows for alarming speeds. Why We Liked It - The Mapex Armory Series P800TW is more of a workhorse than a flagship with it's durable build, great grip and response but you get a lot of bang for your bucks with this one. 9. DW 2000 CLICK HERE FOR PRICE The DW 2000 is a mid-range version of some of Drum Workshops more notable pedals for the money. It provides double bass playing without a heavy investment. The range of adjustments are somewhat downsized from more expensive models but it still allows for many crucial alterations. Not too many compromises have been made regarding the quality of components used within its construction so it doesn't detract any from the level of craftsmanship we have come to expect from Drum Workshop in recent years. It has had to forgo their awesome Delta Ball Bearing hinge which production costs literally prohibited. However, the company somehow managed to scale down enough to allow for the inclusion of their patented Single Post Casting design feature which provides easier movement between your lave pedal and hi-hat. It is a single chain drive set which features their popular Turbo cam assembled with their favorable spring rocker bearing and linkage bar. It has their flyweight beaters which are a lightweight adaptation of their high impact 101s. You can adjust each toe clamp. The Drum Workshop 400 range of pedals is one of their lowest priced series It is fair to say you get what you pay for and these guys don't benefit from the more cutting edge adaptations the 9000 range is prized for. That said they are perfectly fir for function and have been constructed to a high standard. The line is aimed at bedroom thrashers who want to unleash some speed. They make a good pedal for beginners they are easy to set up because they don't have too many adjustments to fiddle with. You get 2-way beaters, single-chain driven offset cam on each side. Now the balance for this set hasn't been refined to the level of their more professional models but they don't have any real noticeable lag. If you haven't played with a high-end set you are going to be dead impressed anyway. They feature standard spring tension adjustment and you can set the distance as expected. Why We Liked It - For 200 bucks you can't be too picky the response is adequate, the bounce could be better but at this end of your budget you wont beat the PDP 400s. These are ideal for those who want to reignite older use of double bass rhythm not emulate the thundering speeds we have been exposed to in more modern metal music. Double Bass Pedal Buyers Guide How does a double bass pedal work. They work exactly the same way as your single traditional kick drum pedal works. They employ either single chain pedals, double chain pedals, belt drive or direct drive double pedal feature to function but instead of one pedal that controls one beater, you get 2 pedals that control 2 separate beaters the secondary pedal is played with your hi-hat foot. Single chain pedals are the cheaper option, they are subject to less durability than a dual option and double bass players who have sampled an array of different pedals would probably describe them as less responsive but some drummers find them easier to control physically and the preference is really down to a matter of opinion. Single chain-drive bass drum pedals are popular among jazz drummers as a double bass solution the resistance level and rebounding is aptly suited for fluid flourishes and trilling triplets. Pedals driven by a double or dual chain provide better longevity and allow drummers to build their muscle memory. Direct drive pedals need to be used with the intention or your playing will be riddled with ghost beats that land the mark they are recommended for double bass players who have mastered muscle memory. They also tend to be much more expensive. No one 'needs' one it really is more of a bonus kind of item. However, a host of bands especially within the metal genre use a double bass pedal for exhilarating, rhythms that go beyond the capabilities of single pedal execution. If you want to cover anything with 64th note bass parts your best bet is to buy a double bass pedal.
