I didn't have one, and I actually thought (not understanding the scale of the photo of the product) that the tapes would go IN this machine. The good news is, you only need a VCR and one cord with red, yellow and white plugs. This will not tie up your TV. You play the tape into the converter. You just hit the pause button to skip those parts. The one thing mentioned in earlier reviews that I would just like to reiterate is that you need to change the recording quality setting from HQ to SP. This will give you 2 hours of video on each disc, as opposed to just over 1 hour and 20 or so minutes. Finally, you should buy DVD-R type DVDs.This machine is very good at what it does, it copies old digital camcorder, VHS tapes, or 8mm tapes onto a DVD. This machine can't create high-definition quality from old tapes. It can't edit but I suppose you could pause the recorder if you knew exactly which parts of camcorder, VHS, or 8mm tapes you wanted to skip. I don't know my tapes that well. If you are a high-tech editor, you probably won't like this machine. I view the window to make sure it is running properly then leave for the 1-2 hours while it is recording. I'll attempt to post a photo of the back of the box, great info on limitations.I will only comment on how I used it. I transferred VHS tapes of family home videos to DVD disc that can be played in my regular DVD player or on the computer. It was VERY easy. The manual was straightforward so I didn't wade through a lot of info I didn't need - it directed me to the exact kind of recording I needed to do. What's in the box - the Sony DVD transfer machine and the power cords. You will need your own patch cord from your player (camera, VCR, etc) to the Sony. For the VHS player I just used the 3-color (red, yellow, white) connections and already had the cord. You will need a way to play the video tape. This machine does NOT have a slot for VHS tapes. If the tape hits a bad spot - noise - the DVD recorder pauses until it gets a signal again. I am THRILLED with this device. It would have cost me a fortune to have the VHS tapes transferred by someone else.I use it in two ways. To transfer old VHS camera footage to DVD's and to transfer mini DV footage to DVD's. It has performed flawlessly to date and I have transferred about 10 tapes. As long as you use setup properly before formatting your DVD, you are good to go. Have a SP VHS tape? Choose SP in setup and it formats the DVD to accept two hours of footage. Make sure to choose video in if you are using rca cables and voila.DVD. When you are doing VHS tapes you do have to start the VCR and then quickly press the record button. How hard is that? But using firewire with mini DV tapes it is in easier. The unit first rewinds the tape if necessary and then starts the record button itself when you press the record button. Someone mentioned interlacing.I have seen no interlacing artifacts in the mini DV tapes I have done so far. This whole process is just so amazingly easier than what I used to have to do. Capture the footage.encode to DVD.author to DVD.and then write to DVD.sheesh.taking so many visits to handle each step, you eventually move on to easier activities and there you are.back where you were. But with this little guy, I can set it and forget it. Come back later.and finalize the disc. Yeah, before ejecting, the unit asks if you want to finalize, meaning no more data can be written to the disk and it then can be used by the DVD player. Just very very cool. It also does not always recognize the RCA composite input for record, though it displays the incoming image on it's monitor screen. This happens most often when it's hooked up to the DVR output. Sure, like most other units, it won't record copy-protected content from video tape or even DVR, but it does not recognize nor will it even record just the news consistenly. And there's no predicting when it's going to act up. I record all episodes on DVR and back them up to DVD for later viewing in my den - at my leisure. I recorded two episodes to DVD on the Sony VRD-MC6 and finalized them. I even turned the unit off and tried again an hour later to no avail. I backed out to make sure it was in VIDEO-DVD mode (not DV-DVD) and still nothing, so I just turned the unit off. The next day when I turned it on, it recorded the 2nd copy - no problem. For use with my Handycam, it's flawless. It reads Sony memory sticks, SD card and composite inputs from the handycam like a champ. In fact, it takes to anything Sony like a champ, however not gear from other manufacturers. Another annoying factor is that it has to format each disc before it will record on them, which can take up to a minute or more, so good luck catching something on the fly. Either my unit is defective, or there are some serious issues with the VRD-MC6. In any event, I'm seriously considering returning it. We perform a three camera shoot at the conferences and are filming in 720p 59.94 onto focus enhancements 100 GB hard drives in M2t format files. We are editing in post using Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. Which was why I was asking about encoding. We have run into some issues encoding to MPEG2 for blu ray and H.264 but have had a little more luck with the H.264. The videos do not include multiple audio tracks, no subtitles, and no extras. The Discs will include menus. My skill level is novice but my manager has been a practicing in video production for over 15 years. We will need to be able to produce blu-ray discs and were trying out encore CS3. Unfortunately We seem to be running into errors every step of the way so we started looking into other solutions. At this point we are just looking for blu-ray authoring software that works. (In this economy, recent holiday Blu-ray purchases flatlined.) It is fine that you are archiving your original footage to HD for future purposes, but for the present, I suggest you simply export the Premiere timeline to standard definition widescreen (16:9) MPEG-2 for authoring on DVD. There are many good DVD authoring programs for standard definition. I am curious to know who recommended Scenarist to you. Could they be sales people. If you are not doing complex navigation, multiple languages, subtitles, etc., you absolutely do not need it. With the enormous learning curve, it is a poor fit for your situation. I would think twice before ever taking advice again from the party that suggested it. Think of your broadest target distribution base and make a realistic assessment of the demand for Blu-ray discs of your material. I do not think there will be enough to justify the expense and headaches right now.I do know that not many people have blu-ray players yet but the production of blu-ray discs has been a request from management. We have thought about DVDit but I have heard mixed reports on it. The people that recommended Scenarist do work with Sonic tools so I do believe they benefit from people buying Sonic software. Years ago I started with DVD Maestro (very stable on W2k) - but its development was stopped and it had its problems with Windows XP during image creation. So I bought the Sony Vegas package only for DVDA and I have released several complex commercial DVDs successfully (DVD-9 with several subtitle tracks, 5 audio tracks 5.1, 2.0, commentary, hidden features, animated menues, scriptings, etc).Revision Studios: did you have the discs replicated at home or abroad. The project leader I'm working with insists on replicating with cheaper facilities abroad, but we're having some troubles playing the final discs.While I have lots of small quibbles with Vegas, I have virtually none with DVD Architect Pro (i.e., not the Studio version, which I do not own).
