So it clearly is nothing to do with the 'laser pick-up'. Regards Martin Regards Martin I don't remember mentioning the S-Video at all. Although there are two S-Video outputs. The DV-656A, which was bought in the UK in the late 90's, has a back panel divided in 2. The left half is Audio outputs of many kinds, which are not a problem, as i use the Digital output straight into a Sony Amp. The right half are the Video connects. There are also other various Audio inputs which don't concern me. There are no direct SCART sockets. The DVD player is too old to have any HDMI output, and I don't want to use a converter box, so the best option would seem to be the Component. However, the Composite Outputs are giving a very good picture, so maybe I'm fussing unnecessarily. There don't seem to be any options to change the Component Output regarding Interlaced or Progressive etc. The only choice seems to be between RGB or Component, and they can't both be output at the same time, on this machine. I don't want to harp on about the '1 sec black' issue, but that is the only problem !! For the other 14 secs the picture is wonderful. But the 1 sec 'black' does get to you after a while !! Maybe I'll have to stick to the Composite. But it seems a pity ! But if you remember, I've fed Component inputs from a different DVD player already with no problem. If there is no DVD in the tray, and the set-up is entered, even when using the component connection, there is no blinking of the text entry screens. I guess I could take the player into a store and check it through one of their TV's !! A bit naughty, but it'll only take a minute or two. And I have bought other stuff there. I'll let you know how it goes. May take a day or two. Pioneer don't want to know about any problems with this model. Too old !! ROD But I don't think I can do that. Some of the reviews that I read state that this player can play both DVD A and SACD. The official pioneer site only mentions DVD A. I think I read that the player as sold in England can play both. I'm confused. Would probably be a good unit if you don't want SACD. If you do you could later get a separate SACD player and go through the cables and switch box thing. I have a 45a and it is pretty well bullet proof when it comes to disc compatibility. I have never had any problem with any disc and this includes the 300 DVD-V, DVD-A and SACD discs. I can't say much about CD's because I don't play them anymore. The DV-757A in the UK appears to be the same as the 47a in North America as well. In North America the 656A seems to be a 45a without SACD and bass management. The manual notates that the 656A doesn't handle SACD or the bass management feature. I don't know what is being sold in England.but if its badged 656A.then the above would apply.In Europe it's a 45a and in North America it is a stripped down version without SACD or bass management.
