They all play without a hitch. If I was to be ultra-ultra picky then the only thing I wish it could play (and I cannot see any way to make it play them) is FLV video files. To me that's certainly not a deal-breaker and I am really digging rather deep to aim that criticism at the Dune. I am 100 totally chuffed with the Dune and I never thought I would find a media player that performs what I need to to do, so very well. Also, I must comment on the build quality because that is excellent too - the unit just oozes quality to me. One comment above the hard drive which is required. It works like a dream and it means that the Dune will not have the possible heat issue. This decision whether to use an internal HDD or external USB HDD is a matter of choice - but I have opted for the latter. If ever a gadget go me so excited that I feel emotionally attached to it then this Dune D1 has done it. It's a unique product and because of the Blu-ray licensing changes made in (I think) 2010, then the uniqueness of the Dune D1 is never going to be challenged because manufacturers can no longer make media players that will play full Blu-ray menus. Top top top top marks to the Dune D1Others may find it not so easy and the lack of clear documentation could be a problem for some. Having said that, the online forums are brilliant and can tell you everything you want to know. I've installed a 2TB WD Caviar Green 5400rpm into mine, which is whisper quiet and fairly cool in operation. This unit doesn't have any internal fans, so I don't recommend 7200rpm drives as the heat could be a problem.I did try it with a 10,000rpm WD Raptor and the noise and especially the heat was too much. So anyway, connecting it to my home network was a breeze and it picked up all my network devices straight away (NAS etc) and I had no issues connecting it to my Pioneer AV. Picture quality is great, as is the sound.I copied all my files from an external drive using the eSATA port. I have a 3TB Hitachi 7200rpm drive in the add on module. This drive is louder than the WD Green, so I may replace it once HD prices have come back down. I installed Zappiti and myMovies digital jukeboxes onto the Dune, to manage all my media. They look better than the standard, but you don't have to do this. The Dune HD gives you the option to do this though, and there are so many free media jukeboxes available.Finally, the build quality is brilliant, as is the styling. It looks great next to my other AV kit.So I have experience with probably 10-15 DVICos, 1 popcorn hour, a Western Digital HD, an Xstreamer and probably others I have forgotten. And then I bought the Dune HD Smart D1. It was a very good buy. It is really standing out of the crowd. The support of various video formats is very good. It is robust, silent (unlike many others). The video quality is very good. Most do a very very crappy upscaling wiht loads of flicker remaining all over the place even on progressive 24 or 25p contents. The Dune does a very decent motion adaptive upscaling. It is not as good as what you can get from say, a Panasonic Blu-ray player, which can do an outstanding upscaling, but it is way better than any other I have used so far, including the very select Popcorn hour 'C'. This is very convenient because you do not have to skip the tons of previews and ads that the DVD makers force you to watch when you insert the disc into a player. So overall the Dune does its job very well and many things have been thoroughly designed by the manufacturer. Last but not least, the box is very complete. When I bought it, I opened it to put a hard drive. Wrong guess, it was there. Again wrong guess, a small plastic bag was included with the screws. Overall the player has a very nice and stylish finish, from which even Sony could learn. The box contents is fairly complete (you should add a SATA drive and a USB drive though). The only negative point is the remote. It is decent, but has a very plasticky feel, and is of a lower grade than the player itself in terms of feel and finishing. But the Dune is still miles ahead of the competition. So if you are sick of juggling with broken and unstable and low-grade media players, buy the Dune and spend your time on more interesting stuff than working around the quirks of your media player.I was looking for something that would connect to my home network, convert and stream movies, TV programs, music from my media server to an older TV that was not a 'smart' TV. I toyed with the idea of buying a new HD internet ready TV but at the time could not justify the spend. The Dune HD Smart D1' is just great. I have it plugged into a 'at the time' quality Toshiba standard def TV with composite connections and fibre digital audio. Recommended.Firstly, it plays a huge range of files natively, including my favourite good old fashioned ISOs, which not every player can. Secondly, it integrates so fantastically well with my AV system. Okay, the native user interface is not exactly uber-sexy, but invest in the MyMovies software and you can take this little unit to another place altogether. Thirdly, response times on my gigabit network, some hard wired, some using powerline, some wireless, is fantastic with no drop out - I store all my files on a cental server rather than locally on the Dune hard drive. Picture and sound quality is excellent and the unit really looks good in a home AV setting. Finally, I come back to MyMovies and control integration - being able to integrate an App so well with the unit makes accessing movies a dream, with full Dune remote control built into the App. Dune players also integrate beautifully with third party systems, such as Control4, who use the Extra Vegetables driver to integrate the Dune player. Build quality is superb, adding a hard drive just required removing three screws and set up was a doddle. Connection of esata Drive To connect an esata drive, switch off both the player and the esata drive, connect the esata drive to the esata port of the player (and connect the esata drive to its power supply), switch on the esata drive, and, as the last step, switch on the player. The player will recognize the esata drive, and will show an item corresponding to the esata drive on the main screen of the player menu. Switch off and disconnect the esata drive only after switching off the player. This possibility is not guaranteed to work correctly in all cases. NOTE: Not all esata drives may work well with the player (may depend on a particular esata drive model and particular usage conditions). The esata port is provided for extended flexibility, but without a guarantee that an arbitrary esata drive will work well. It is recommended to test a particular esata drive before making a decision on its usage with the player, and use only those esata drives which are known to work well with the player.For example, you may need this if you intend to copy data to the player's attached HDD from network using FTP or SMB accessr, or if you intend to use the Bit- Torrent client built-in into the player, or copy data from other storage devices to this HDD using the file manager of the player. Ensure that all write operations are finished or stopped before switching off the player. If you switch off the player using the power switch on the front panel, first put the player into the standby mode using the RC to ensure all potentially buffered data is fully written to the connected drives. This is done in order to decrease power consumption and reduce noise when the player and the connected devices are not used. When the player leaves the standby mode or when it is switched on again, the connected drives start working again. If the player is in standby mode, and it needs to access the stopped drive (e.g. because the built-in BitTorrent client is running, or because access from the network via SMB or FTP is performed), the drive will automatically resume its operation. This may depend on a particular drive model and also on the exact way how the drive is connected to the player and how the power is provided to the drive. It is not recommended to use such drive models. If proper handling of these things is important, it is recommended to learn or test in advance whether a particular drive model works correctly with the player. Using Storage Devices 17 Setup Menu The setup menu may be entered only from the file browser mode. WARNING: During media files playback, an access to the setup menu is disabled. In order to enter the menu you need to stop the playback first. To enter the setup menu, press SETUP on your RC or enter the Setup folder in the Main screen of the player (the file browser showing the root folder). To exit the setup menu, press SETUP once again, or press the RETURN button. Quick Setting of Video Output Mode The MODE button of the RC allows quick setting of video output mode without entering the setup menu. After pressing the MODE button you will enter the quick video setting mode. After pressing the MODE and a digit button please wait for up to 15 sec.The 5 listed video modes are provided only to ensure that you can quickly set up some usable video mode for any type of video connection you are using, regardless the previous settings of your player. After getting a picture on the screen with one of these modes, please go to Setup menu and choose the most appropriate video output and resolution. During a video playback, the MODE button is deactivated. PCM (Pulse Code Modulation, forced decoding): a mode in which the original sound track, i.e. Dolby Digital or DTS, is converted (decoded) to the Pulse Code form. It is supported by decoders of virtually any up-to-date audio equipment. But this mode is only recommended in case your AV receiver does not support full decoding of multichannel sound of above formats, or the audio subsystem of a TV set connected via HDMI cable is used instead of a home theater system.
