Twelves years after their beginning the 996 was introduced. There were three models available at that time. There was the base model also known as the Biposto. There was the 996SPS which came with an Ohlins suspension system and was only released to the European market. The Ohlins model 996 came with some updated parts made from titanium and carbon fiber which made it lighter. The engine of the Ducati 996 was built to impress. It contained larger pistons, a strong crankshaft, a newly designed air intake system, and a new exhaust system that was situated under the seat. It had a powerful 112 horsepower allowing it to go up to 161 miles per hour. It has a 1.5 gallon fuel capacity with an average of 42 U.S. miles per gallon. The chassis was also new to the Ducati family. It featured lightweight wheels, a stronger brake disc and pad system, and new calipers. The front and rear suspension system were adjustable as well. The wheels were Marchesini. The spokes of the wheels had five spokes instead of the regular three spoke design.
