Been out of college for a year and can finally buy something I want. I'm not sure whether the difficulty was because of that car's gearbox or just my own inexperience. Problem is, literally no one else in my extended family drives a manual. I'm really nervous right now about going to the dealership and test driving the manual there. Basically being like, SURPRISE, newbie manual driving skills. I've played a lot of Gran Turismo, but to my knowledge there was never any real clutch enforcement physic-laws, nor is GT that realistic in how a car would actually respond. It basically just being a floaty, paddle-shifter simulator since you use a controller. Any ideas on the best game to practice that most accurately simulates a manual. Ideally not forced straight into some racing environment. Also if this is a completely stupid idea, let me know. I'm just grasping at straws right now. I think the simulator could help with the concept of going through gearshifts but clutch control is something that honestly varies so much, especially from car to car. I learned to drive manual about 5 or 6 years ago, but I didn't really drive it on a daily basis until I got my mustang about 2 years ago. Even though I already knew how to drive manual, it still took me a while to get the hang of it to be completely confident. Obviously I'm not trying to discourage you, but rather, letting you know that it's alright. Some clutches are really grabby, some require more pedal effort than others, some have really high (or low) engagement points. The point is, all cars are different. I've even been on test drives where the salesman was having a little difficultly operating the clutch. Bottom line, don't worry about it too much. Be honest with the salesman, I'm sure he'll understand. Probably will drive up to my parents and have another go at the Austin Healey as well. This is when you slowly roll on the gas and off the clutch. The FRS has a torquy little motor, don't be afraid to shift early. Little movements. Lots of beginners mash the gas or just step off the clutch. Be controlled, make fluid changes. The car doesn't need much to start moving, and wait until the clutch is engaged fully before stepping off the pedal. Or better yet, don't step off the pedal. Remember the brake is a reverse gas pedal. If you start to decelerate, try to shift down at the same points you shifted up. If all else fails, test drive an auto frs and then buy the manual. Just watch some videos on YouTube about driving stick beforehand so that you have a good understanding of the theory behind it all. Test drove the automatic full well knowing that the manual was the one to buy. Start the car in 1st with the clutch fully pushed in, then slowly and gently let the clutch out. There is no need to give any throttle input at this point, do not press the gas pedal. As soon as the car starts to move, push the clutch all the way back in. Repeat this a few times until you learn the engagement point. You may stall a few times, but that's okay, no harm will be done. As quickly but as smoothly as possible (without stopping the throttle input) let the clutch all the way out so that the clutch is now engaged and you're still giving it a little bit of gas. Going in Reverse When you need to reverse the vehicle, oftentimes, you won’t have to push the gas pedal. If you do, it will be a little bit. Set the car into reverse when at a complete stop, and slowly let out the clutch with your other foot on the brake to control the car. Parking Manual cars don’t have a “Park” gear, so it is important to engage the emergency parking brake every single time. You will also want to put the car into gear, not neutral, that way you have both the emergency brake and the gears keeping your car from moving or rolling. While having a greater degree of control over the mass of metal and flame and rubber just makes sense elsewhere, here in the automatic-dominated U.S. our favorite gear is called “Drive” and our transmissions do all the thinking for us. I am fine with “Drive” in the real world, but how could I call myself a racing game fan if I don’t know how to drive a real racing vehicle.
