It works with two Denon apps (Heos and AVR Remote) and one Alexa skill (Heos). Reviews of the apps and the skill were terrible but I’m not sure what the reviewers’ problems were since I connected the receiver to my network (which uses three Google WiFi mesh router devices, sidebar: I HIGHLY recommend these) and everything worked great. The Heos app is good enough for selecting various streaming sources and controlling basic functions like volume while the remote app allows more control of the receiver through you phone or tablet. After calibration the receiver sounds amazing and I’m not even using the advanced modes like Atmos (I have a basic 5.1 speaker set-up in our living room with zone 2 speakers in our screened porch). The predecessor to this (730H) is basically the same and has won multiple “best home theater receiver” awards. It is well worth the money in my view!Haven't had any more problems. Bought the previous model, the 730, then realized there was a newer model and opted to spend the money for the upgrade to the 740. I made the purchase to replace the receiver in my years old Onkyo home-theater-in-a-box, which didn't passthru 4K video signals to my UHD TV. I am very happy with this Denon, I have my Playstation 3 and 4 and an UHD Samsung blu-ray player connected to the Denon, and the sound is a lot better, clearer, than the Onkyo receiver, playing videogames and blu-ray discs I am hearing sounds I'd never heard before. I can also use the Denon bluetooth receive capability to play music or podcasts on my iphone through the Denon. The setup (including the Oddysey microphone for calibrating the speakers for the room) was effortless, though the onscreen text is terrible, as if from the 80s (very odd). Other than that, looking forward to getting a lot of use out of this receiver.It replaced the Pioneer VSX-532 due to HDMI glitches and a few other minor bugs with that unit which resulted me on getting rid of it. The build quality on the Denon is decent, it feels as if it's going to last for many years to come and the remote control is equally good too. The overall sound quality is awesome if not better than any other receiver I've used in the past, I'm currently running 7.1 surround sound and it sounds very good. The Audyssey MultiEQ calibration is executed well and leaps ahead of MCCAA calibration from Pioneer. The new upmixers Dolby Surround and DTS Neural X both give a new breath of fresh air to stereo and 5.1 sources (so far I prefer the latter upmixer). HEOS Music is pretty good too so far. And HDMI passthrough including HDR10 is for the most problem-free. The only con I've had with the receiver so far is the menu UI looks like old computer graphics from the early 2000s, time for Denon to step it up a little bit right there. While in-ceiling speakers give you the best overall performance for the two immersive formats, if you're not allowed to do in-ceiling speakers (especially if due to apartment reasons), I'd would definitely go the Front Height speaker route before going with the Atmos-enabled speaker route by getting a pair of SVS Prime Elevation speakers or even use a pair of bookshelf speakers to mount on the wall that is just 3-5 inches from touching the ceiling.The Denon website had a misprint indicating the S740H has up scaling capabilities, which is not true. Denon replaced the S740H with the S940H which upscales. I greatly appreciated Denon’s respons and I am happy we th the Unit provided. Don’t expect any video control over the quality of the output. Very limited menu and restrictive unnecessarily. They forgot the V in AVR.This unit has all the audio and accessories options we needed and also is a very easy setup. Although the on-screen setup “look” is last decade I personally like the user interface and particularly the built in Audyssey MultEQ. We have several different speaker manufacturers in our system and Audyssey MultEQ takes out most of the hassle in calibrating and matching speaker outputs and makes it all work without me breaking a sweat. The back of unit is clean and straight forward while offering all the options for hookups we needed. Remote is much easier to understand than our previous (and higher end) Denon AVR.
