Alsoft recommends that DiskWarrior reside in the Utilities folder within the Applications folder. When installing under Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, the actual location of the DiskWarrior application is important. Because DiskWarrior is a sophisticated disk utility, it runs into a limitation of a portion of the Mac OS needed by DiskWarrior but not by most applications.http://www.blueparadise.pl/userfiles/bushnell-deep-space-420x-manual.xml Due to this limitation, the path (the names of the enclosing folders all the way to the top level of the disk) cannot contain certain characters. The actual list of allowable and non-allowable characters is too large to list so it's best if the path contains only the letters A-Z, the digits 0-9, and spaces. In order to run DiskWarrior, you must be started from Mac OS X 10.3.9 or later. Installing the DiskWarrior you received via download purchase: 1) Open the 'DiskWarrior.dmg' file you received via download. This will cause the disk image named 'DiskWarrior' to appear on your desktop. 2) Drag to the trash any existing copy of DiskWarrior you have installed. DiskWarrior is not a disk repair program in the conventional sense. Instead of patching the original directory, it uses a patent-pending technology to quickly build a new replacement directory using data recovered from the original directory, thereby recovering files and folders that you thought were lost and that no other program could recover.http://ninethreefox.com/?q=node/10917 Monitors drive hardware for potential drive failure Verification of replacement directory ensures data integrity Comparison of original directory with replacement directory tells you which files and folders may have been affected by directory damage Patented preview feature to view what the disk will look like after the directory is rebuilt, allowing you to view files and folders before any directory changes are written to disk Repairs damaged boot blocks and blesses the system folder to ensure that the computer will start from the repaired disk Compaitble with OS X versions up to Snow Leopard Not Compatible with OS X LionTo calculate the overall star rating and percentage breakdown by star, we don’t use a simple average. Scot Matson 5.0 out of 5 stars My hard drive failed on me after I upgraded my RAM with an additional third-party 1GB stick and installed a copy of Snow Leopard that a friend had laying around. I wasn't seeing the performance gains I wanted so I began reading forums on ways to clean-up my system and optimize the performance. Ultimately I blindly entered commands into the terminal and that was the last time would boot. I heard about DiskWarrior but was apprehensive about making the investment. Most reports of my error code pointed at a completely corrupted hard drive but I had not completely lost hope. I wanted my pictures, music, and docs but two years would pass before I caved. I had attempted many other options just short of attempting a initialization of my proprietary OSX. In a last ditch effort I took the leap and wouldn't you know it, Disk Warrior came through. I highly recommend this product. I would have paid hundreds more, in my opinion this was a bargain and a sweet victory.http://granit-gabro.com/images/brother-3750-manual.pdf After I recovered my data I wiped my hard drive and put a fresh install of my proprietary OSX and now my laptop works fine. I'll never know what I did to break it but now it's so old I have no use for it. I'm just glad I never gave up hope. But my MacPro was having a severe case of the spinning ball and nothing would get rid of it. The messages in Disk Utility, Activity Monitor and the Console were so obscure they could have been written by Bill Gates. I tried DriveGenius, which supposedly, Apple uses at their Genius Bar. Next came iDefrag. This was a long shot and speaking of long it took 8 hours. Whatever my Mac's problem was, it wasn't fragmentation. That said, very high marks to Cariolis tech service who examined the messages in the Console and pointed out some potential problems. Finally, there was Disk Warrior. After the 8 hour defrag, DW's 5 minute procedure was a bit of a surprise but a nice one. Of course, if you knew what every item was, you wouldn't need the utility or even have the problem, but I digress. I accepted DW's new directory and the spinning ball, while not gone, was greatly diminished. From then on things just got better. I'm not sure of DW's role in this but over the next few days the spinning ball decreased and ultimately went away entirely. Was this all DW's work. We will never know. But when it came to fixing the problem it got the ball rolling, so to speak.I took it into the apple store and they told me there that the disk was not able to be saved. They couldn't find the disk at all. I had gotten Error 7, I believe- this disk cannot be repaired. It was like he was telling me my dog had died and let's just get you a new dog. I was not going to cry in front of this guy, but I was just trying to keep it together. I was not going to turn it over to them, because I had heard about Diskwarrior from apple boards and friends, so I tried to keep calm and put it back in the box without letting tears spill.http://quickfix-poland.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628a8f7635521---Canon-lc700-manual.pdf I'm a good Catholic mom of eight kids, and I don't tend to use the word myself, but it just seemed appropriate at the time. Six years of pictures, six years of work. I came home, and it actually took me a few days to order Diskwarrior. It was the kind of procrastination that definitely stems from fear of failure. I read every review, and I decided it was definitely my best chance. After I received it I waited a month to try it. It was right before Christmas, and I just felt if it was really all going to be gone I didn't want to know that at Christmas time. So here it is, January 19, 2015, and I turned the computer on for the first time since November, plugged in the Diskwarrior disk, and in less than one hour everything is back to absolutely perfect. I can't even believe it.I wish I had known about this when my first hard drive crashed several years ago, because I would likely have been able to recover a lot of work that I had lost. When the second hard drive failed, I really needed the data that was on it and DiskWarrior came to my rescue. I would advise that anyone who tries this not give up if it doesn't seem to work the first time. It took a long time to find the disk, but it eventually appeared in the menu. With my failing hard drive it got to a point near the end of rebuilding the directory and stopped working for more than a day and nothing seemed to be happening. I decided that I had nothing to lose at that point and did a hard reboot and tried again. It worked perfectly on the second try. I recovered everything save for a few mp3s here or there that I later realized were missing. DiskWarrior gave me the chance to save critical data before switching to a new laptop. To briefly describe the problem: MacBook Pro from 2011 on OS X 10.7 (Lion) wouldn’t boot up. Wouldn’t boot into Recovery Mode (so couldn’t run Disk Utility), wouldn’t boot into Safe Mode. Tried Single User Mode and the fsck command but nothing was working to fix the errors on the hard-drive.BABYBASKETSONLINE.COM/userfiles/files/canon-5d-mk-iii-user-manual.pdf This happened just after installing a.dmg file to use a Samsung M3 external hard drive that wasn’t formatted properly for Macs (just FYI: this isn’t needed. Simply use Disk Utility on the Mac to switch from FAT to Mac OS Extended (Journalled) format and erase the drive, then it’ll be good to go.) We also tried resetting the PRAM, every single thing we googled we tried and nothing worked. The MacBook made the start-up chime and sat on the grey Apple logo and the spinning cog and a progress bar that never loaded. We didn’t know if we could retrieve any data, let alone fix the problem. Simply put in Disk Warrior and restart the computer, holding down C to boot OS X from the DVD. It creates a replica of the drive, then replaces it, and reboots the system. We were back in! All the files were save and sound, the machine is running better than it was before, far quicker, quieter and more stable. From all accounts, they recommend running through this process every month or so to prevent problems, which is definitely what we’ll do now, as well as backing up on a monthly basis. This product is a lifesaver!Basically Diskwarrior does one thing, it repairs directory structures. The directory is the Macs internal lookup and nothing will work without it, it's important to note that unlike the other utilites, Diskwarrior does not defragment your files or directories and it doesn't do anything like partitioning - it's pretty much a one trick pony (although it now has a Disk status monitor, which is inferior to SMARTReporter which is free). My experience is that it completely fixed my G5 iMac when some corrupt RAM caused some directory damage and it helped me get a clean build (using the 'archive and install' option) onto my sister-in-law's iMac when it failed to boot. I haven't been that impressed by Essentially if your Mac won't boot or you're suffering from weird symptoms, this is where you start (once you've exhausted Disk Utility's limited capabilities).http://www.theagentpipeline.com/wp-content/plugins/formcraft/file-upload/server/content/files/1628a8f8202a1a---canon-lc-4-manual.pdfAnyway, I don't work for them or have any connection to them, but my experience is that DW will more than likely fix any OS problem your favourite Mac can think up. It's worth every penny, and I'd feel naked without it;-)The version supplied was actually V4.4 which is current at time of writing this review and compatible with Lion. Ran Diskwarrior from the startup disk provided and hey presto, it identified and fixed the problem within a few minutes and made a fantastic job of regularising the hard drive generally. I also installed Diskwarrior on the hard drive as you can set it to automatically check for disc errors at specific intervals. Yes it is expensive for a utility but your hard drive is worth it!Neither will it boot from external hard-drives. Neither will emails to Alsoft support elicit any response. You may as well take the money from your wallet and set fire to it. I suspect that it worked quite well for previous editions of Mac Operating systems and received rave reviews from specialist magazines and users as a result. However, the manufacturer seems to have failed to adapt the product as the operating system it was designed for has evolved thus rendering the product useless for current versions of the OX10 operating system. The lack of any response by Alsoft to legitimate inquiry or to provide a system update for the product is disappointing in the extreme. I feel badly let down by both the product and the manufacturer. Comment on this posting. However, in recent years -- pretty much since release of OS X -- I have found it to be less useful for 2-3 reasons. I'll probably be sorry some day but after several years of not using DW successfully (and very rarely unsuccessfully), the cost and bother of upgrading looms ever larger, comparatively speaking.Comment on this posting. Except in my case it would constantly get a kernel panic whenever I tried to boot from it. Numerous emails to Alsoft asking about this went unanswered, so I can say that yes I've noticed slippage in their tech support. I think for the last few years they've been coasting on their reputation. Comment on this posting. It just keeps going in an endless loop or spits out the CD. I noticed the OS version on the disk was quite old -- I don't have it handy, but I think it was no later than 10.4.8. Using a much larger drive as I don't think Much as I like the compact size of a USB stick, I pretty much always have older external hard drives on hand, retired from active duty because I need more space, so I just use an old one to create an emergency boot drive. Install a clean, minimal OSX system, boot it, load up my recovery tools, enter any serials needed to activate them, shut down and put the drive on the shelf against need. It's a no-name but very well reviewed.Booting from DVD works, but you don't get Finder, a web browser to research problems, and the ability to use any tool you have handy without needing to reboot.Put one in a protective envelope and it'll slide into a laptop bag and quietly live there for the day you need it. Tech support has always been very helpful.I could not boot from my emergency volume (external FW drive), and run DW to repair the TM drive. It kept telling me it was unable to do so. I was pretty sure my drive was also fine, but I simply wanted the peace of mind and do my regular maintenance anyway.Essentially, a 64-bit version of DW might allow it to work, but nothing has been officially announced (that I know of).Unfortunately, my relatively new iMac cannot boot from my original DW disc since the boot drivers are not as current as the iMac's drivers. I understand all the reasons why the DW disc needs to be constantly updated (waiting for new Apple drivers), but after jumping through those hoops several times, I decided to hold off on buying the latest upgraded disc until I really need one. For now, my emergency HD boots up and runs DW just fine, but only on my other drives.Comment on this posting. When Apple's Disk First Aid (a feature of the Disk Utility) fails to fix a corrupted drive, turn to DiskWarrior. Have it on hand before problems arise. DiskWarrior 5 is distributed on a USB flash drive. It requires a second USB flash drive (16 GB or larger) on which is builds a bootable DiskWarrior volume that's customized for your Mac. So you must start up your Mac from the DiskWarrior DVD: Starting Mac OS X from a DVD is a lot slower than from the internal hard drive. DiskWarrior resolves existing disk damage by rebuilding your disk directory using data recovered from the original directory, thereby recovering files and folders that you thought were lost. The directories DiskWarrior creates are also optimized for maximum directory performance. DiskWarrior is not a disk repair program in the conventional sense. It does not attempt to solve all of the possible problems that can occur with a disk. It specializes in eliminating directory errors - the most common problems Mac OS users have with their disks. DiskWarrior rebuilds your disk directories making them error-free, eliminating any problems the errors would have caused, and recovering lost files. It fixes any problem with master directory blocks and alternate master directory blocks (HFS), volume headers and alternate volume headers (HFS Plus), volume bitmaps, catalog trees, and extents trees.Other products attempt to repair your directory one step at a time, ignoring the big picture of what is truly wrong with your directory, and risking file information that could be saved. At Alsoft, we know that the most important thing when you are attempting to repair your disks is getting your data back. That's why the first thing DiskWarrior checks is your directory data, and that's what it uses to create a replacement directory. DiskWarrior continues its rebuild operations unless no directory data can be found.A physical hardware malfunction can cause intermittent loss of access to any data on the drive. If the malfunction is serious enough, the only way to retrieve the data on the drive is through an expensive data recovery service.
