While the system would not allow me to create preview timers using the program guide until the channels were actually unblocked, I could set up manual timers. I have always been able to set up manual timers before the preview channels were unblocked. Now it appears I will need to wait, at which time I should be able to create regular timers using the program guide. With 35 timers to set, I wanted to set them up ahead of time, to be able to resolve conflicts. While some cable DVRs and DirecTV's rival HR20 offer similar functionality, it's usually unofficial and unsupported by the manufacturer or the cable company. TiVo HD, with its SATA expansion option, is the exception. There is a catch with the ViP, however. The programs must be archived to the external drive, a process that takes hours for multiple high-def shows, although you can use the DVR normally during the archiving process. On the other hand, once the drive was connected, we were able to play back any programs stored on it immediately, exactly as if they were stored on the DVR's main drive. We recorded a few episodes of The Sopranos from HBO HD to DVD, and the downconverted standard-def picture didn't have the issues we've noticed on some DVRs; in fact, it looked pretty good, significantly better than the same episode on the standard-def HBO2 channel. In our experience, the Scientific Atlanta 8300HD, a common high-def cable box, does an inferior job downconverting HD shows to standard-def. Response time was also excellent. The ViP622 reacted to all commands quickly, programs from near-instantaneous 30-second skips to superfast blasts through the EPG. Creating a new timer recording takes only a second or two on the ViP622. Neither time could I get this adapter set up with the modem. It would find the modem, but always fail to connect. Yes, I currently have one attached to my VIP722 HD DVR and it works perfectly. I used my laptop to set up the Netgear Universal WI-Fi Adapter, I then attached the Netgear Universal WI-Fi Adapter's to the ethernet port of the Dish receiver and used the USB port on the back of the receiver to power the adapter. I was able to configure the dish receiver to use it just like a broadband connection. It has been working flawlessly for about 3 months now. My first thought was that satellite is going to potentially cost me a lot of money in order to get at least something into the other rooms in my home. You see, with the ViP 722 and some neat RF tricks, I could send two lines into my main theater room (the dish feed and my antenna feed) and backfeed the second tuner out of the room on the same Dish line. That backfeed line could then be split and fed to all of my rooms. What this meant was that I could watch HD content in my primary theater room as expected, but I could also pick any other TV in my home to watch standard definition courtesy of the second tuner. If I wanted to upgrade down the line I could just add additional boxes with HDTV, but this was a start. You don't, as with cable service, get to tune different channels on each of the televisions. Still, most families don't watch more than two TVs at a time, so this presents a nice solution for those who aren't looking to fill their homes with additional satellite receivers right away. This was done simply by running an orange twin feeder of coax (3 GHz quad shield) where one side carried the antenna and the other handled the dish signal and backfeed. We placed the hardware into my rack system and the DISH installer hung the 1000.4 dish on my roof and configured it to received signal from the Eastern Arc of MPEG-4 satellites. It's not terribly expensive and it will save your hours of hassle. Doing it yourself involves a knowledge of splitters, combiners and often RF distribution that is quite often beyond the understanding of many consumers. In our case the backfeed system entailed the use of special diplexers to make it all work properly. If you subscribe to HD channels, you can view only these by selecting the down arrow next to My Channels and select “My HD Channels.” This will allow you to create a channel guide of just favorite channels for you or your family members.
