This sensor can also be used for measuring the heart rate since the quantity of blood flowing through blood vessels varies in accordance with the rate of blood pumped from the heart. Thus, pulse oximeter can also be used to measure the heart rate without the need for connecting any ECG electrodes. The adhesive strap is a Velcro tape which is needed to adhere the pulse oximeter to the finger and also to prevent external radiation. It does not provide any interference to the child. Also, the temperature sensor is stitched in the vest such that it is under the ankle to sense the body temperature. These sensors enable real-time monitoring of the children. The data acquisition and transmission unit is depicted in Fig. 8.4. Lilypad accelerometer is a three-axis accelerometer which was used to monitor various activities performed by the child. The accelerometer provides the values of acceleration along three axis directions. Data from the accelerometer was collected for a duration of 20 s at a sampling rate of 20 Hz.
