Another note for those changing the blades: Pay attention to the direction that you are supposed to rotate the cutter head when doing your blade change!!!! Rotate it toward you if you are standing on the switch side of the machine. If you rotate it in the wrong direction you can end up eventually backing the motor pulley off of the shaft which will cause you some serious issues. So if you are having premature blade wear you may want to look at the health of the rest of your planer parts, specifically the motor bearings.They're a pain in the ass to install, not because of the blades but because Dewalt makes replacing blades a 25 minute process involving the removal of about 50 screws. The blades themselves do a great job, and when one side is worn out, you can flip them to get another round of use out of them. Overall, the blades seem to last between 6-8 months on our planer, with almost daily use. Very hard woods like ipe or certain mahoganies will definitely dull them quickly, though. I've never used generic blades and don't think I will. These are quality, and the price is decent considering how much use you get out of them.They work great for 95 planing needs. I've run 1000's of feet red oak, maple, and pine with absolutely no issues. The metal is a bit softer so the edges don't hold up to extremely dense hardwoods like hickory. The positive side is the edges are sharper than carbide. I just keep an extra set available and change them out when the planer gets really noisy.So i ran some boards through the drum sander making them flat, then ran these same boards through the planer, the cupping returned. These blades are jacked up, or maybe 1 of the th8im not sure yet.at any rate I've asked for a replacement set, after I see how those perform I'll update my reviewI received new blades for my DW735 planer two days ago, installed them immediately and was already getting tear-out the next day. Horrible product, horrible customer service.The knives have been a sore spot for me. The original set of blades came with nicks on the blades (refurb). My first thought was what have I done. Since it was a refurb, the DeWalt money back satisfaction guaranty did not apply. The rest of my shop is mostly DeWalt and I've been happy up to that point. DeWalt was good enough to send me a complimentary set of new knives. These immediately showed signs of wear and nicks. Surprising since all I was running was small amounts of pine. The DeWalt rep claimed that while pine is indeed soft wood, it also has pockets of resin and hardened sap that make it harder on the knives than oak or maple. Well, I thought, yeah, right. The first major project was a window replacement. I milled the trim myself out of pine using the planer and a router. I went through two sets of knives for a few hundred linear feet. Talk about nicked blades.I can replace a set of knives in minutes at this point, however. Figure about 2400 linear feet or 1600sq feet. Starting with a fresh set, I went through three sides (1.5 sets) of knives. Only dulled the knives. Not one nick. Guess the DeWalt rep was right. Did not seem intuitive but the proof was in the results. Lessons here, 1) Do not buy a refurb. Its just not the same experience using a friend's which was purchased new. Thats why I bought the DW735 in the first place. Positive, first hand experience with the tool. 2) The in-feed and out-feed extender tables are not optional. Especially if you are planning to feed in boards longer than 2 feet. Consider also getting roller stands. I could not imagine feeding 12 foot boards without the extra support 3) The DeWalt stand was another good purchase. 4) Pine is harder on the knives than hardwood and more likely to cause nicks. 5) The OEM knives really need improvement.http://www.drupalitalia.org/node/75945 I am going to try the after market replacement blades and report. I ordered hese an they were here 2 days later the price difference is well work the cost savings.Try calling sharpening shops, my local one will resharpen these 3 times. My local store will resharpen them, even though dewalt says they can't be sharpened. As soon as they stop working PERFECTLY flip them or change them. Any knife company will redo the edges but won't garuntee the thickness gauge on your machine. Big deal, calibrate for 2 minutes and you're good to go with resharpened knives at a fraction of the cost of new. I'll never buy aftermarket again, my 2 sets have been successfully resharpened 6 times each and still going. My planer is used as much as the table saw for the work we do, almost full time all day.Yes but they are also way more expensive. These blades are just as advertised. Inexpensive as they are they cut well when new. If planning hard woods like maple or oak they will dull quicker than more expensive blades. If woodworking is your business then maybe look elsewhere unless you want a cheap set to plane wood that may damage your good blades.
