The spring loaded ejector is continually being depressed by the case, until the case is free of the chamber and the tension from the ejector is released, causing the case to eject, breaking free of the extractor in the process. I went to my local indoor range today to rent a Desert Eagle 50 AE (DE50) to shoot with a friend on their birthday. The employee working with us gave us the typical rundown you'd expect but then added that the DE50 had too powerful of a spring to allow the slide to slam home without a bullet going into the chamber (implied damage to bolt carrier group). At first, he said it was a polymer part in gun causing this, but I questioned why the manufacture would do that. Or (the most likely in my opinion) because the store told him to say that so people wouldn't play with the DE50 all day and not spend any money on it. Dropping the slide won't hurt anything. This is a prime example of why you should never trust anything that comes out of a gun store employee's mouth. Upon reading, I found the following: TLDR; The manufacture does not state that slamming the slide without a round causes damage. Taken from the the DE50 owner's manual from Magnum Research's website. This implies durable parts. Page 15 4. Draw the slide to the rear, check the chamber visually to ensure that the pistol is unloaded and release the slide. It clearly states to release the slide with no mention of cushioning the slide or having to load a round. Page 16 Note: Do not load an individual round into the chamber and then close the slide. This can damage the extractor. Only chamber rounds from the magazine as described above. This states that damage is possible to the extractor when not using the magazine to load rounds. This is likely because the round does not seat properly in the bolt which damages the extractor. This implies no issue exists when no round is present or when the rounds come from the magazine. Page 17 4. Allow the slide to spring forward by releasing it. Again, no mention of cushioning the slide to avoid damage. It seems to be purely conjecture until concrete evidence is presented against it. The desert eagle as a whole is sturdy as fuck. The only parts that really see wear and tear are the recoil springs, which are supposed to be replaced every so often depending on the loads you are shooting. This also shows that you shouldn't listen to anything about desert eagles that doesn't come from someone who does own one or has previously owned one. People constantly make shit up or spread wrong information on these guns for some reason. Letting the slide slam home on an empty chamber repeatedly can cause parts to crack. It's not an issue if you do it once in a blue moon, but on a rental gun where a dummy might be doing it many times per day, that's bad. Generally with any gun, in the chamber is empty and it isn't going to pick up a new round, ride the action closed with your hand. I feel like this is the first time this has ever come up when I've handled firearms at a store and I've never read this in any owner's manual. Someone I handed the gun to did it as soon as I handed them the gun. The sound of it closing without a round in it is brutal. Also, slides cracking over time is a known issue with older desert eagles. The new machined slides may hold up better. Eventually, one or both will break. That doesn't mean you want to smash one on the side of your head. Metal is more or less the same thing even if it takes longer to happen. There are plenty of stories about not slamming slides home on 1911s. Rimfire guns will damage themselves if dryfired (and they're not designed for it). I don't know anything specific about deagles but I wouldn't be too surprised about anything. I do believe some guns have had this issue, but I'm still betting on poor steel quality or bad designs until I see otherwise.
