If your is brightness too high you can change reduce the value of R457 or R459 on the board mounted around the CRT base but you must use high voltage resistors 1KV plus rating, or increase the chip resistor R463 which is 100K. Because I have 6M8 1.6KV rated resistors in stock I have found that changing either R457 or R459 to 6M8 from 10M is usually enough to bring the brightness back into spec. This change will not affect the operation of the DAS software should you have it set up at a later date.I just bought a Dell P1110 used. It had the brightness problem in a big way and I had to use an nVidia software adjustment as well as having the front control on zero. Even then it didn't look much. I tried a 6M8 in place of R459 (10M). That one is easy to get to right at the back of the monitor after removing the plastic cover and two metal ones. The 6M8 made a huge improvement. I could remove the software adjustment but still had to have the front control on zero. Next I tried a 4M7 which was recommended on another forum. With the 4M7 I was using the front brightness at 70-100. This was okay but PowerDVD XP was rather dull even at 100. (PowerDVD has the same low-level problem with its audio.) Today I tried a 5M6, it seems to be perfect so far. I bought a 2M pot to use with the 4M7 just in case it didn't work but there's no need. Now I'm running the brightness about 40-50. There is a slight ghosting, about 1mm to the right. The two focus adjustments have no effect on this. It only really shows with black text on a white background. Also, every time I open a window the monitor tries to resync (screen bounces a touch and slight resize) which is irritating. So for a pleb who doesn't know how to fix these things, are you aware of anyone in Western Australia who can fix these things. Or do I just copy that earlier message and show it to someone who can fix monitors. Press question mark to learn the rest of the keyboard shortcuts Log in sign up User account menu 4 Restoring the black levels on a Dell P1110 I've looked up how to solve that, with WinDAS and a TTL-RS232 cable, but most of the guide links to the programs are dead and it's very stressful, as I'm just an artist and not an engineer. I can't even find the little hatch on the back it's supposed to have. I probably do have most of the equipment needed to fix it - I have 32bit windows computers, and ones with serial ports (or usb ports if thats the cheaper cable). I just don't want to break anything. Could anyone help me through this. There's another person also interested. Is there anywhere I should contact you or something. For whatever reason, on some monitors, both Dell and Sony didn't actually include the little hatch to access the serial pins, and actually require that you remove the case to get to it. There is a removable cover on the hatch that allows you to access the serial pins. It is however still not easy to do and will need some needle nose pliers or similar to reach in and attach the pins. It fixed the bright white for me. It's still a little washed out while it warms up. That room sits about 60f so a tad on the cold side. Takes about 15-20min before it fully settles. If you end up doing a lot with Windas you should write up a guide. I havent been able to find anything on fixing geometry (min has slight horizontal bowing). Not easy for me to replace. I also have a P1110 that used to have a the brightness problem and a green tint several years ago. I did that and it solved the problems for that monitor. I don't think I even had to use Windas on that monitor. All rights reserved Back to top. The site may not work properly if you don't update your browser. It's going to take a recap to fix this one for sure. We'll see how modular it is inside. If boards come out without a big fight I'll attempt it. At least the glass looks good. It cleaned up well, and the AR coating is perfect. Oh yeah: it's got menu adjustments for convergence. Must have been a relatively high-end display for 2000. On one the gamma is ridiculously low and there seems to be a high cutoff for color. On this page all the squares below 30 is just black. The black level and other colors are good though, just dark games are difficult to play. Otherwise the focus is easy to adjust, and they are razor sharp. I removed the anti-glare on one because it had a scratch, now it is a lot more colorful and brighter. Follow these instructions to adjust your monitor. The brightness issue is actually a very common problem with these monitors. You'll need to purchase a TTL serial to USB cable to connect the monitor's EEPROM interface to your computer. You also may need to use an older Win98 or WinXP computer for WINDAS. It's really old software. I wonder if the WINDAS software can adjust focus. I'm guessing it's 16-bit. I'll have to dig out my old Win98SE computer, or maybe find a virtual machine. They've already told you the answer, windas is all you need. Brightness is the easy fix, getting a good convergence is a much harder task. I had to use a virtual machine instance of win98se to get the 'astro' program to install and give me the dll files I needed. I can run windas.exe and select the correct com port for the USB adapter, but it doesn't seem to talk to the display. I am using the 4-pin port behind the little door on the rear of the CRT. Is that the right one. Right now I'm setting up a win98 VM on a linux laptop with a real serial port, in the hopes that it will work with that. All rights reserved Back to top. Sometimes it is the high voltage multiplier, and or sometimes it is also some of the capacitors in the HV and scan circuits. As for any service set-ups you will require the DAS alignment system with the software and interface. There is also some factory training and proper instrumentation required to do this type of work.
