Made with by Manualza. Dell M4700 solution The disk caddy of Dell Precision M4700 is cleverly designed and is quite versatile. It can be ejected using a sliding release switch inside the battery compartment. Hard or solid state disks can be swapped very easily without tools in seconds, as drives are secured inside the caddy without screws. Caution: The disk should NOT be hot swapped, unless drives are operating in AHCI mode. The factory supplied HDD or SSD can be duplicated using disk cloning software. We used the Macrium Reflect free edition disk imaging software. MS-Office 64 bit could be installed in the 1st disk, so that all available RAM can be used with Excel. All MS-Office 32 bit versions e.g. from 2003 until 2013 could be installed in a 2nd disk for compatibility and testing purposes. A 3rd disk can be used for off-line work or for installing a Linux O.S. etc Data Security Physical security and data protection is an important consideration, while travelling or working remotely from corporate headquarters. Usually, any 15 inch laptop is too large to fit inside a safe, but 2.5 inch hard drives can be locked even in hotel mini safes. Such a configuration requires advanced knowledge of how computers work. Dell Precision computers (among other models) include a recovery partition to restore the disk to the factory default state. Attempts to modify partitions or the master boot record (MBR) could corrupt the default restore process beyond repair. We do not recommend multi-booting with the M4700. Dell Recovery Manager The Dell Backup and Recovery Manager is pre-installed in all Precision systems, and helps users return a Precision system to its factory default state. Perform this operation, if the system experiences an unrecoverable crash, becomes infected by a virus or other malicious program, or simply to clean out the hard drive for improved performance and security. To initiate the restore process: Backup all your data to external media, as the disk will be erased. Press F8 during startup. Click Dell Backup and Recovery Manager from the bottom of the list. Click the drop-down menu and select Dell Factory Image from the list (if not shown). Click 'Next' Check the confirmation box and click 'Next ' Other previously created backup images, may appear in the list as well. The image stored on the recovery partition of the drive won't be available, if the partition has been deleted or corrupted. The restore process cannot be stopped, after it has been confirmed. Please don't forget to shut down the laptop properly, before swapping disks. Otherwise data may be lost. There are 2 benefits, if the battery is removed when is not needed it e.g. when you are desk bound: The eject switch can reached much faster, especially when lots of cables are connected to the laptop. The battery won't be constantly charged or discharged (if the laptop sits unplugged in your desk). With minimum use, your Dell battery will last longer. Just remember to top-up its charge, before you need the M4700 portable again. Windows 10 is no exception. I have put together some quick tips to solve problems noticed with my Dell M4700: Apricorn Aegis secure encrypted disks and USB sticks are not recognized by Windows 10, if inserted in USB 3.0 ports (right-hand side only). Please note that USB ports on M4700 are not colored in blue. Workaround: Go to Device Manager, click the 'Intel(R) USB 3.0 eXtensible Host controller 1.0 (Microsoft)', uninstall the driver without deleting it from disc. Finally let Windows scan your PC for hardware changes, so that the driver is reinstalled. HDMI monitor port is not recognized: Install the graphics driver using the packages from Dell Support. And, unsurprisingly, its advanced hardware gives it a serious leg up against the competition in terms of performance. Design and features Like many business desktops, the Vostro 470 doesn't dazzle with design: It’s little more than a basic black box with a few silver accents. What matters more are its layout and ease of use, and the Vostro 470 does well on those fronts. The CPU at the heart of the system is the Intel Core i7-3770, a quad-core chip running at 3.4GHz that’s capable of marshalling up to eight simultaneous processing threads by way of Intel’s Hyper-Threading technology. Our review machine had 8GB of RAM accompanying this. Primary storage space is respectable at 1TB, provided on a single 7,200rpm hard drive. There’s also a 19-in-1 card reader for accessing yet more removable storage. The interior is well organised, with all the cables and wires neatly tied, providing easy access to the one free internal 3.5in drive bay and three available PCI Express (PCIe) x1 expansion slots. The 350 Watt power supply may be a bit on the wimpy side if you want to add much more hardware. The keyboard and mouse that come with the Vostro are graduates of the no-frills school. Windows 7 Professional, in its 64-bit incarnation, is the operating system of choice, and it comes with a bit of bloatware in place including Microsoft Office Starter 2010 and Adobe Reader. A 15 month trial of Trend Micro Titanium Internet Security is included in your purchase price. The Vostro 470 is covered with a one year basic limited warranty. Performance The Vostro 470 also turned out a fine score on CineBench R11.5 (7.49) and solid times on our Handbrake video encoding (1 minute and 4 seconds) and Photoshop CS5 filter application (2 minutes and 46 seconds) tests, putting it not just in the upper echelon of systems in this class, but at the very top of the rankings in each case. The same is true of gaming (although, of course, we know no user would ever consider using the Vostro 470 for such a thing). At 1,280 x 720 resolution and with medium quality settings, the DirectX 10 (DX10) title Crysis ran comfortably with a frame rate of 73.5 frames per second (or fps). Lost Planet 2 stumbled a bit more in DX11 mode, though its 36.3 fps result (at the same resolution, and with all details set to middling) is still within the realm of playability. Unfortunately, the AMD video card balked when we adjusted the settings upward: Neither game was playable at 1,920 x 1,080, so we recommend sticking with more moderate video settings if you want to wind down after a long day of work. Even so, the Vostro stands alone as far as speed is concerned. Verdict The Dell Vostro 470 sets a fine new standard for Ivy Bridge business PCs on traditional processing and graphics challenges alike. But for everyday tasks, whether CPU or GPU-accelerated, the Dell Vostro 470 won't steer you wrong, and it put in some very impressive benchmarks to earn the machine our Best Buy award. Dippy 5.0 out of 5 stars My Dell XPS 13 has just 2 USB ports and a Thunderbolt port, besides an SD Card slot. To overcome these lacunae, Dell offers this 4-in-1 adapter in order to expand the output and input of the XPS 13. It is exorbitantly priced but an extremely useful gadget if one has to make presentations and needs a wired internet connection. The product is reassuringly sturdy and well designed. The Thunderbolt lead tucks in neatly into the unit when not in use. It is surprisingly light and yet does the job very efficiently. It was delivered very promptly and was in its original packing case.Don't just go for the cheapest one as you might end-up with a fake one. If you choose the seller wisely, the product is good. 1 start less because of a weird way it operates. Strange but thats how it is. I don't know what to use now for my Dell xps 13.Wasted my money.For the VGA and HDMI connections, just make sure that you connect the adapter to the Mac first, wait for a few seconds so that it is recognised (no notification of connection, in normal Mac fashion) and then plug the VGA or HDMI cable. Some monitors actually work without this (i.e., you may have the HDMI cable attached before plugging this to the Mac), such as my Dell 2713HM, but normally that is not the case.
