The manufacturer’s own website is not exactly full of information, especially about discontinued models which are always around. As more information and photos becomes available I will post it here. I recommend picking up “Polaroid Maniulations” by Kathleen Carr if you would liked more comprehensive information about using Daylabs. Search online for your favorite digital printer and most likely they can turn anything you’ve got on your computer into a slide which you can then print. Just remember that 35mm and instant films are not the same aspect ratio (height and width) making your prints always cropped a tiny bit even when not enlarging them. When it comes to doing emulsion lifts or image transfers it is very helpful to be working with something you can duplicate when you inevitably mess up. Today you can easily take anything digital, be it a photograph from your dSLR or even something completely digital from Photoshop, and turn it into a 35mm slide. Plus some models come with the later CB103 instead of the wire clasp CB101 shared with the heavier Polaprinter. Unless you have gels to place in front of the printing bulbs, there’s no filters available which can mean you slides don’t print exactly right since the color of the printing bulb might not match your instant film. Then again that can be totally awesome to experiment with. The slide holder can hold multiple slides at a time and you can go to the next with the flick of your wrist. There’s a lock to hold the slides in place, but I recommend leaving it loose so you can move in all directions. When enlarging or cropping you simply pull the film back away from the printer and extend bellows between the two. As you increase the magnification the image on the screen is cropped with the proper frame lines so you can get a perfectly composed print. Moving the slide holder while inserted in the machine allows maximum versatility for getting the exact portion of your slide onto instant film. There’s some exposure control with a dial and also a focusing knob that, coupled with the screen, is super easy to get right the first time. Each base uses a different film format: When viewing for composition there’s a little door in the base for you to look into and see the projected image on the darkslide covering your film. When you want to print, close the door and pull the darkslide to allow exposure and hit the print button. This can be very useful when matching the printing head to your film. Most models use an electronic flash for printing but some use a tungsten bulb that is warmer and depending on what you’re printing to might need filtration. But every model is different and you should consult the user’s manual for your specific model as to which setting is for which film. Page 5 3 Connecting the power supply Plug the Daylab 35 power supply (110 125 VAC) into an appropriate electrical outlet and then into the connection on the back of the Daylab 35. Determining the processing time of the film Processing times vary for different film types. Warning: Never leave your slide under the VIEW lamp longer than necessary. Heat from the lamp can damage your slide. The Daylab 35 has a built-in switch that automatically shuts off the VIEW lamp after approximately 4 minutes. This prevents the lamp from overheating and damaging your slide. Page 7 5 Setting the Color-filtration controls (8) On the front of the Daylab 35 are three color-filtration controls for correcting color balance and for creating special effects. If you want to adjust the color balance of your print, use the color-filtration controls to add amounts of the three primary colors: cyan, magenta and yellow to your print. Add one color or a combination of two colors at a time. The filters are scaled so you can measure the amount of filtration for each color. Page 8 6 Note: As you set the filters to make color adjustments, the Daylab 35 does not show the effects of the adjustments as you preview the image projected on the dark slideviewing panel. Make test exposures to gauge what effects you want to achieve with color filtration. Note: Adding filtration extends exposure time. Use the exposure-adjustment dial to compensate for these changes. Also note that extending the exposure times can result in further color shift. Note: Use no more than two filters at any one time. Page 9 7 Exposing the film 1 Set the film-type selection switch at the setting appropriate for the type of film you are using. See Setting the exposure controls. 2 Set the exposure-adjustment dial at the setting appropriate for your slide. For a slide image with average lighting conditions, start with the (0) setting. 3 Set the VIEW-OFF-PRINT switch at PRINT. 4 Set the color filtration controls at the appropriate settings for your slide. Page 10 8 If no processing tab appears when you pull the Ieader tab: Stop. Do not pull another leader tab. Instead, carefully open the film holder, in dim light, without disturbing the film pack. You can use your fingertip to make sure the pack does not move (15). Take hold of the processing tab that failed to come out, gently pull it all the way out of the film holder (16), and discard it. While the door is open, check the developer rollers and the processing-tab slot and, if necessary, clean them. Page 11 9 Possible problems, causes An image blurred. Use a properIy focused image. Page 12 10 A curtain-shaped mark or broad streak If you start to pull the processing tab and then stop or hesitate briefly, a curtain-shaped mark along the print edge appears. If you stop mid-way into the pull, a broad streak results. Always pull the processing tab out in one smooth, continuous motion. An oblong in the print(20) This indicates that you did not pull the leader tab all the way out. When you then pulled the processing tab, the leader tab retracted into the film holder, thus spoiling the picture. This book is the number one resource for helping you along with your Polaroid SX-70 manipulations. It is HIGHLY informative. The author guides you step by step and even provides some background information on how the processes were discovered. She also offers a lot of inspirational material in an advanced techniques section of the book. At the end of the book there are artist galleries with drop-dead-gorgeous work. I especially find the handcoloring section of this book to be very helpful. I wasn't really aware that I could add some color to my SX-70 manips. She goes in-depth about each medium that can be used to enhance the color (Prismacolor markers, watercolors, pastels, etc.) She also provides some useful information on how to enhance the Polaroids digitally in Photoshop. There is comprehensive information on the film, all of the available cameras, tools for manipulation, using a Polaroid Daylab to print slides onto SX-70 film (including info on various models of Daylab), handcoloring SX-70 prints and making digital prints of your SX-70 prints. This is the definitve guide to SX-70 manipulation. Everything you need to know about SX-70 is in here. There is also a section on Polaroid image and emulsion transfers. This section contains information that is supplemental to the information in Kathleen Thormod Carr's other book, Polaroid Transfers, so don't consider it a substitute for Polaroid Transfers. There is some redundancy between the two books in that there are step-by-step instructions for how to use various models of Daylab to print onto Polaroid films in both books. Good Luck PhilI'm sorry to hear the unit you picked up didn't come with the cord - the seller did you no favors. A Daylab is also known as a slide printer. You take a regular slide (that you've shot using slide film), drop it into the slide holder, and look through the viewfinder of the Daylab to get it into focus on a plain screen. You load Polaroid or other instant pack film in the bottom of the unit. Slide printers used to be widely used when Polaroid film was still around - for various alternative photographic processes like image transfers, emulsion lifts, or manipulations. Other slide printers have the ability to swap out bases.I don't know if this model does or doesn't. I'd check online at ebay or other auction houses to search for the power supply, or even a different model - they should be pretty cheap, if you really want to give it a try. If you like to shoot slide film, it's a fun way to get other results from your slide images. Polaroid is gone but Fuji makes lovely instant pack film, which is generally compatible with these systems, though I've not personally done it. I have a Daylab 35 Plus that takes up to 4x5 slide transparencies, and used to set it up and work on my kitchen table - no darkroom needed, and the processes are easy to learn and never fail to give unique results. For excellent, step by step instructions, look for Kathleen Thormod Carr's old book on Polaroid processes. They're still around and very helpful, even though they will refer to Polaroid film only.
